I wasn't going to mention it but last night I was in a 99 Cent store with a friend when to my surprise Big Yellow Taxi sung by Joni came on over the sound system. I started singing it a bit and then the conversation went like this: Me: Hey - listen - they're playing the one Joni song that you know! Friend: Oh yeah - a new group recorded it recently! Me. Counting Crowes? Friend: Yeah Yeah! Me (blithely): Well it's one of the most covered of her songs - probably over 500 times now - a guy on the Joni list is collecting them all and he's up to forty volumes of Joni covers at this point (Friend glazes over, speechless, and looks at me like I'm nuts.) Next they play some Steely Dan - Me: HEY Jack of Speed!! Wow! Friend has now moved 3 aisles away and appears to be trying desperately to hide among the Doritos and Cheetos. Aside from the cheesy synth, there really are some great songs on DED. For example, I can't think of any Joni song that has more 'tude than 'Tax Free.' I love the way the electric guitar comes in on this song, too. And the polyrhythms on 'Lucky Girl' are fantastic. I still laugh my arse off every time I hear Joni sing "booby-prize guys"! You know when I was in art class, I knew when my art instructor was lees than impressed with my work, she would either say "It's honest or well it's defferent" So ok DED is different from the others - to say the least! The only way I could put this album at or near the top of Joni's work - is if it was the only one! Except for Shiny Toys and Impossible Dreamer and maybe another song this album is actually irritating! On the other hand that same art teacher also said, "A good part is better than an indifferent whole." A nd yes .. even at her worst Joni's genius still hovers way above the rest, but thank gawd we dont have to rely on this one alone. Robert Moog (and Buchla around the same time) invented the modern synthesizer, or at least made the first production models. I cited ELP, Floyd, etc, not because I think you should like them, but because they used synthesizers much more artfully and effectively. The sounds on DED to my ears sound like someone bought the cheapest synth they could find and didn't spend any time coaxing cool sounds out of it, just used the factory presets. Ironic since they had the megabucks Fairlight. I agree with you that diversity is what makes the world go 'round, and I'm glad you (and others) like DED. I got one off-list response -- from Randy Remote, I think, but I didn't save it, so, if I now misattribute, I apologize. That correspondent, Randy or not, said that there is only one "Janis"; all others must specify -- and he meant Janis Joplin. Anyhow, it seems clear from the context here that Bryan refers to Janis Ian. Either that, or, if Bryan goes to see Janis Joplin in concert whenever he can, perhaps he'll share with us how he does so! Be that as it may, I'd like to second his enthusiasm for Janis, Joni, Judy and Joan, and add one more J: Jackie (DeShannon). For those unfamiliar with JDS, visit www.jackiedeshannon.com and follow the link to the Jackie DeShannon Appreciation Society after looking over the eponymous site. I suppose it can be objected that JDS is more commercial, and less artistic, than the others, but she has been prolific, has composed and recorded some real winners, looks great at about the same age as Joni and is back at work after a hiatus -- and is given credit for helping to create the folk-rock genre. Any replies to this will probably be No JC, so, please send me a copy directly. Thank you.
