This is generalizing but for more information read William Stryon's Darkness Visible or Kay Redfield Jameson's Touched With Fire. A lot of individuals don't create at their real down periods but the fact that they have experienced these highs or lows is somehow connected. Especially poets. I , myself, don't see Joni as depressing, she has enriched my life so much. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 May 2003 13:36:02 -0700 From: "Victor Johnson" Subject: a little on the weird side 9/17/2002 On Creative Damnation by Art I don't spend a lot of time speculating on the various comings and goings of the Devil. I mean, the way I see it he can do his thing and hopefully I can do mine and ideally we won't have to meet too often. You know, maybe just the occasional fiddle contest and nothing more. Nonetheless, I really do hope that the Devil has a sense of humor/irony and that he at least puts some creativity in his work. I mean, if I went to Hell and it was really all just really hot and people like whipped you or something I'd be really disappointed. Disappointed obviously because I'd been condemned to eternal damnation but also disappointed because if you're gonna be tormented forever you'd at least like to see some effort put into the operation. If the situation arose, I would want my Hell experience to be one tailored to me. You know, I'd like to see a Hell that's filled with Mountain Dew bottles that can't possibly be opened. Or it could be filled with pretty girls who would come talk to me and then I'd be me and naturally they would become very confused as to how I could suck so bad at talking and then they'll go hook up with some jerk and then come back and complain to me about it. You know, the kind of Hell where you'd tip your hat to the Devil and say "Zing! You got me!" If damnation is handled creatively I have one small request. I came up with a Hell for Joni Mitchell fans that I think is worthy of the Devil. This is of course not to say that all Joni Mitchell fans should go to Hell. I know very few big Joni Mitchell fans but I'm sure that many of them are quite nice. However, there's gotta be at least one evil Joni Mitchell fan who has merited eternal punishment and when he/she dies this is what I want them to see: A big empty parking lot. Then they'll panic and go "Oh no, it really happened! They paved paradise and put up a parking lot! They actually did it! The prophet Joni Mitchell foretold it correctly! How could we allow this to happen?! You fools!" And then if there were any Joni Mitchell fans that were also really into Planet of the Apes you could also have the top of the Statue of Liberty sticking out just to really mess with their heads. And yes, for all you stodgy Hell traditionalists, the parking lot could be really, really hot. http://www.tjmonkeys.com/thought.php?theid=527 Victor Johnson waytoblu@mindspring.com Look for the new album "Parsonage Lane" this spring! Maybe, like an overly pungeant wine, with age, it has mellowed. Or maybe she was way ahead of the curve, and now that we have all caught up with her, the overlooked brilliance is there, shining with,,uh,,,brilliance. Not. The same two songs I liked are still the only two I like. (Good Friends and Shiny Toys). Apologies to you DEDheads out there, but this thing is about as appealing as a wadded up ball of cellophane. As I listened my way through, thinking mostly about what CD I would put on next, if such time ever came, I tried to analyze why it doesn't work for me. Here goes. 1. Weak material. Of course you cannot make a happy song about Ethiopia, and I respect Joni's attempt to inject some social commentary, but....DRUDGE!.....I am having trouble even remembering the other titles...and have little motivation to. "Empty, Try Another"...now there's a tune! I mused that maybe she was trying to tell herself something (possibly subconsciously) by repeating those words....like this is an empty habit, try another path... If only she had listened, she might still have a singing voice today. 2. Horrible drums. That 80's big reverb automated snare SWACK! stinks up the tracks big time. Funny that Vinnie Caliuta (sp?) is listed in the credits. Bet he wishes he wasn't. 3. Cheesiest of synthesizers. Many people have done some awfully cool things with synths, even way back in the monophonic patchcord dark days of Moog. Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Yes, Pink Floyd. Or in the 80's bands like The Cars. On DED despite listing a Fairlight (the most expensive synth by far) the synth sounds are like something from the 'music department' of Walmart. Like when everything sounded like a Yamaha DX7. Cheese!...which leads me to... 4. Producers. What exactly was Thomas Dolby's track record at that point? A big MTV hit "She Blinded Me With Science".... a semi-annoying novelty song at best. The other producer was hubby Larry Klien. Fine bass player, nice guy I'm sure. Neither of these guys should have been allowed to practice their novice producer chops on one of the greatest songwriters of all time. The whole thing leaves the aftertaste of a blatant attempt to crack MTV by copping the sound of the current hits, now best forgotten. It sounds dated, even more so than alot of the other awful 80's music of the time. Even Cyndi Lauper and Madonna's 80's stuff holds up better. One good thing. I don't have to hear it for another eight years. That is the great thing about personal choice isn't it as I find ELP, the Cars (amazing that they made the hall of fame in my opinion), and Pink Floyd amongst the bottom feeders of music. As for Moog, don't have a clue as to who they are and that is a good thing. Well, that is a little severe for ELP though don't care for that bland and boring sound. As for Pink Floyd, my older brother forced me to listen to their piggie album on a 6 hour road trip once. Now, I could have used some drugs at that point. And the great thing for me is that I never have to hear any of them again except for the time it takes me to change the radio station. Not. >> It's probably about that long since I last listened to it, and I can't say I miss it much. I would also say there are only two really good songs (and not even "great", for what such categorisations are worth) on the album. Good Friends is one, if only because it sounds like a high class *pop* song - so maybe that's a backhanded compliment! I don't much like Shiny Toys, but I think Ethiopia is really beautiful and very poignant - lovely chord sequence. Sorry to blunt, but as far as I'm concerned the production on DED is VILE! Thomas Dolby has done some great work, particularly with Prefab Sprout: Steve McQueen (which I believe was called Two Wheels Good in the USA) and Jordan: The Comeback are seriously good - but then again they had some decent songs to work with... It really sticks out like the sorest of sore thumbs in her vuluptuous body of work. My difficulty in understanding it lies with its musical motivation: why the hell would she make this record sound so over-the-top 80s? Why the heavy drum machines? Why the tectonic synthesizers? Why, why, why? I know that some people have suggested to me that maybe it's because she is attempting to fight fire with fire, using blatantly 80s sounds to attack the decade that spawned them, but I'm not convinced by that. I do like Good Friends and I can stomach the title track but the rest to me just seems like hastily-created "junkfood for juveniles." That's why I always see it in the $1.99 bin at Walmart with a giant "Great Value!" sticker on it. Frankly, it's not great value at all and should have a "Take Me...PLEASE!" sticker on it. Since I was only six years old at the time of its release I really can't say what I would have prefered in favour of Dog Eat Dog from Joni. Maybe an EP with five or six tracks, more scaled-back in terms of the production, a more concise piece? I don't know. All I do know is that DED is dead. I wish she had left the 80s to the gals who understood it and got along with it: Annie Lennox, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper. (Some memorable moments on the charts from these ladies.) And I happen to know a lot of people who love the album, so please accept a big hug with all my ranting. DED is just not my cup of tea. Or lemonade, for that matter. - -Andrew - --- Randy Remote wrote: > Well, every eight years I force myself to slip "Dog > Eat Dog" into > my CD player to see if it's gotten any better. > Maybe, like an overly > pungeant wine, with age, it has mellowed. I had already talked to Julie Z. Webb on the phone so when I left home, I knew it was gonna be casual and fantastic. It was. To me, every year is a reunion of my internet buddies. It's worth it just to hang out and "talk music". In addition, there is music. That first JoniFest was the first time I heard Sherelle and many others. The music was a bonus at first but now.... now the music is the main attraction! We crossed the line somehow at PazFest. Suddenly JoniFests became a Music Event with a reunion thrown in for good measure. Last year's blowout, hosted by Ashara in the NorthEast corner of the USA, was the biggest yet. Read up: http://www.jmdl.com/jonifest/jf0209p1.cfm We had people from all over. Really, all over. Last year I finally got to meet Sue McNamara. Sue's a photographer, singer and guitarist. She can be heard shouting "You're a GENIUS!" on the audience recording of Joni's appearance at "A Day In the Garden". :) (Sorry Mac! I had to!) Anyway, in the wake of last year's JoniFest, Mac said, >>I'm going to cut to the chase and tell you that the performances on Saturday night were amazing.>> I said, >"Amazing", yes. It started out "amazing". Then, it became [flat-out] amazing. Then [weep-inducing] amazing. Then [gooseflesh-raising] amazing. Then [barn-burning] amazing. It was a gourmet meal of many courses. Yeah, I had a good time. That's a good start. A hearty "THANK YOU" you goes out to: * everyone who sang or played or hummed quietly in the corner. Of course, it's the music that brought most of us together so that's first, last, and always. Thanks Joan for bringing this disparate group together. * everyone who de-lurked this year to join JoniFest for the first time (Whitten! Mac!). * Sherelle Smith and Bryan Thomas. While I love all of the music, you two in particular were beyond great, to me. Beyond extraordinary. Beyond....well, you get the point. I've been bragging about you both on the list for a while, telling everyone to be ready to be amazed. Anyone who was in the Performance Space on Saturday night, August 24th, 2002, between 8 PM Eastern Time (GMT-5) and about 3 AM Eastern Time (Sunday morning) will not soon forget the evening. I've already used all of my superlatives. I'm sure that people who were not there will be completely unable to grasp how thoroughly transcendent that night was. While the rest of the weekend I was sleep-deprived, on Saturday night, I was coming off 12 hours of sleep. I was completely, profoundly stoned on the events, especially because I trumpeted you two and relished how everyone else was "getting it". In short, thanks. Now I know how the promoter Bill Graham felt. (BTW, smart alec that I am, after Bryan blew the roof off the dump this year, I pretended to console him, saying, "Don't worry about your performance too much, Bryan. Don't be too hard on yourself. You'll practice this year. You can always come back and "try_again_ next year!" Psych!) * To Jeff Bish and Kate Bennett. Not only did this classy couple watch over the schedule, but they introduced a brand new aspect to JoniFest- the song circle. I thought that surely by now all of the elements were in place but the song circle seems, already, like a permanent fixture. It's "us". The song circle smells like "us". * If the song circle "smells" like us, the Full Moon Central Resort "feels" like our American home. I hope the UK contingent finds a home that's as cool as this one. Ok, I love Ashara and I don't want her to have to shell out a bunch of money for this year's fest and I certainly don't want this to be the end of Jonifest but a hop skip and a jump for some people might be nigh to impossible for others. Personally I would love to be there but with the way things have been going this year, I just can't commit to it. There may be others in the same boat. So encourage but don't pressure, ok? Kate, please don't take this personally. Mark E in Seattle ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 May 2003 18:37:41 -0700 From: "Lori Fye" Subject: Re: jonifest > What weekend is the big event? I'm a big fan of all four. Ha! I've used the very same reference many times. I came to know the four J's (as a fan anyway) all in one magical musical year, mid-1974 to mid-1975. I'm still a big fan of all four and see them all concert whenever I can. Maybe, like an overly pungeant wine, with age, it has mellowed. Or maybe she was way ahead of the curve, and now that we have all caught up with her, the overlooked brilliance is there, shining with,,uh,,,brilliance. Not. Say what you will about Dog! But I double, no, triple dare you to trash Impossible Dreamer, a magnificent song. I listened to it several times a few days ago, it's so moving and lovely (synths or no synths). Love, Mingus ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 May 2003 23:06:03 -0600 From: Dan Olson Subject: Re: Puttin' on the Dog My experience with DED (shortly following its release): I had followed Joni, enthusiastically snatching up her LP's immediately on their release (Mingus and WTRF), I saw her on the S&L tour, and had filled in my back catalog from used record stores. I had not followed developments in her's (or any others '80's sounds) for the years that dragged on before she issued a new album (namely DED), and I wouldn't have even known about it except that a friend of a friend had it; I taped her copy and listened to it on a walkman EVERY DAY on my express bus commute for a year, maybe longer, and it had me transfixed - mesmerized. Later on in the decade, I was equally unaware that CMIARS was released until I saw it in a cutout bin, and was immediately blown away. From that point on, I have always known about and purchased Joni's albums religiously. I agree that compared to her works that followed (and preceeded), DED doesn't hold up well, but as my only exposure to the '80's sound thing, I have to say that I dug it immensely at the time of it's release, and have enjoyed listening to it ocassionally since. "Impossible Dreamer" and "Lucky Girl" are good songs also.
