She says that she once took the advice of someone who said that her music was depressing because she wrote at night too much. His point was that Joni WASN'T as depressing as her work reflects. And in the PBS documentary, Joni says that her best work came out of depression. She says something like, "If you drive out the devils, the angels fly away too." I don't think that's a particularly convincing argument. I mean, I agree she wrote extraordinarily well during the emotional turmoil on BLUE, and that's an album that I particularly admire. But I just don't think this is an argument that can be generalized to all artists. I listen to a lot of spiritual aritsts, and often their inspiration is moments of ecstasy; their recognition of the divinity of all living things. So I disagree with Joni when she says that if you chase away the devils the angels leave too. Then again, what DOES she mean by that? Is she using "angels" as a metaphor for inspiration? Still, I'd have to disagree. I think that a lot of artists have written incredibly inspiring spiritual music, and who the hell cares what the devils think about it. Perhaps some of the problem with Joni is that so much of her music revolves around relationships, which in her life have been pretty transient and filled with emotional upheaval. You think all the way back to the relationship that got her pregnant, and then the rebound nightmare with Mr. Mitchell. A lot of incredible music came out of that, but it's only one slice of life. I don't think Joni can make generalizations about other artists or art in general simply based on her own success in mining those sad moments for incredible songs. I think a more balanced perspective would be that an artist can still make good work out of a "blue" period, but nor is necessary to be overly blue to make good art. Having said all that, a lot of spiritual art that is based on moments of ecstasy is also tinged with the sorrow of the world, which is considered a happy/sad play of human souls. So perhaps the issue is more complex than either of us are prepared to admit. ===-- om shanti-=- Nick "I'm frightened by the devil, and I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid" == JM ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 May 2003 11:26:38 EDT From: AsharaProducLLC@aol.com Subject: Jonifest 2003- VERY Important!! Plagued by mental and drug problems, he died at 36 in 1987, and like some of his many influences b Jimi, Bird, Duke and Bach b he's often remembered by a single name: Jaco. A new two-CD anthology helps preserve the memory of Pastorius' best work. Assembled with characteristic care by Rhino, the set offers samples of Jaco's work as a solo artist and as a session player, and also includes the tune for which he's best remembered, "Birdland," recorded by his seminal group Weather Report. There's some needless noodling, the biggest flaw of fusion, but also bursts of brilliance. Included are tracks from Pastorius' 1976 debut and from his work with pianist Paul Bley, guitarist Pat Metheny and Joni Mitchell. There are eight live cuts from 1972-1982 and three previously unreleased tracks. Jazz fusion buffs likely own most of this music already. Lauded for his latest CD as recently as last weekend in The New York Times, Andersen was originally coming to town for a simple interview session with Fred Migliore, syndicated host of WFIT's Sunday morning "FM Odyssey." From his home in New York, Andersen says Migliore "corralled me" into staging an impromptu performance at the Eau Gallie High School auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Last month, Summit Quest was rocked when three school officials were fired, including its administrator, for shoddy bookkeeping that produced a $90,000 shortfall and left its faculty in a lurch. Working without pay or health benefits for the past month, teachers have nevertheless continued to hold classes for some 120 students. The community has pitched in with donations. "How many people would do what they're doing without pay?" wonders Migliore from his home on Merritt Island. "The state says it wants to see evidence of local support for this school, so I want to do whatever I can to help." With all concert proceeds earmarked for Summit Quest, an Eric Andersen concert is a pleasant surprise. Toiling for decades out of the mainstream but long a favorite with critics, Andersen continues to draw rave reviews, this time for "Beat Avenue," a double-CD project released this year. Its title cut is a 26-minute riff detailing his literal but impressionistic whereabouts Nov. 22, 1963, when President John Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. Delivered in a smoky ooze reminiscent of Leonard Cohen and punctuated by jazzy inflections of keyboards, sax and trumpet, "Beat Avenue" meanders through his bizarre encounters with the likes of Beat Generation literati such as Allen Ginsberg and Neal Cassady. But praises for "Beat Avenue" fit a larger pattern for the novel lyricist whose biggest-selling album, "Blue River," came out 30 years ago. Rolling Stone magazine called 1989's "Ghosts Upon The Road," his first American release in 10 years, "one of the best albums of the '80s," and 1991's "Stages: The Lost Album" won the New York Music Award for the year's best folk album. After having worked alongside industry giants and pioneers -- Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Tom Paxton, Rick Danko, Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith, etc. -- Andersen has lately emerged on Bravo channel's artist interview series, and is the subject of an upcoming PBS documentary. But his relative obscurity to most consumers of pop culture underscores yet another example of the inflexibility of the music business. But at 60, Andersen is used to it by now. The record companies, he says after a resigned pause from his home in New York, are run by "moronic" executives, "frustrated bass players" who "end up being lawyers," and rainmakers who "you don't even know if they can read." Even at age 20, however, Andersen, a Pittsburgh native, was heading into the wind. That impulse accounted for his presence in San Francisco, attending a Beat Poet reading in Haight-Ashbury, on the night of a defining moment in American history. Most young acoustic guitarists with high ambitions had migrated east to explore the stardust of Pete Seger, Ochs and Dylan. "For most Americans, (the JFK murder) was as if the bird of hope had been shot out of the sky," Andersen recalls. "But the strangest part of that evening for me was its eerie sense of normalcy. Ginsberg had just come back from Southeast Asia, and his take on it was that the chickens had come home to roost." Andersen probably won't be performing "Beat Avenue" Monday night; he says that takes a special venue, alongside co-writer Robert Aaron. In fact, he isn't sure what he'll be playing. "I wasn't planning on doing a concert at all," he says. "This could be interesting." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 May 2003 21:23:16 -0400 From: "Robert Argento" Subject: RE: Jonifest 2003- VERY Important!! > Mary wrote: > > > That said, I *am* curious as to why those to came in previous years > > have not made the commitment to attend this year. But New York is simply too far off for myself (in Florida) and for very many people who would perhaps be interested. Thank you all! Here's the story connected to this. I went to a family wedding this weekend and my two sisters were there. I have become estranged from one of my sisters - let's call her Hazel. The wedding was very awkward and we avoided each other all evening. My other sister, let's call her Gale, was trying to think of something to bring the two of us together. She couldn't think of anything, but on the way HOME from the wedding, Gale remembered that Hazel had told her she thought the American Masters show was the best thing she had ever seen on television and that she had wept. So she thought if she had brought up Joni Mitchell at the wedding, Hazel and I would have been reconciled. Well, I don't think that would do it, but anyway, Gale herself kicked herself for missing the program, and asked me to lend her my tape. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Deb Messling -^..^- messling@enter.net - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 May 2003 21:41:28 -0400 From: Deb Messling Subject: Re: peridots? I wonder if there's a difference between American and Canadian pronunciation of this word? I know that British English "anglicizes" some words that Americans retain the "foreign" pronunciation for. For example, don't the English pronounce Don Juan as Don Jew-ahn? And don't the English pronounce the "t" in valet, whereas Americans would say "val-ay." SO, if I'm right, and if Canadians follow the British pronunciation schemes, perhaps Joni has just become more Americanized over the years?
