[magsnbrei Subject: American Mistresses Hey Thanks to Bob Muller yet again. I got my 'pal' version of the American Masters prog about Joni. Very interesting contributions and well made documentary I thought. As always we are left with more questions than answers and now I want the 'next level' programme on what she thinks about lots of other stuff. I'd heard the raceless and genderless music comment b4 but not sure I ever agreed. She is a white North American woman of the 1940's. Artists dont live in a vacuum and express ideas shaped by the space and time they inhabit....that aside I learned things so that is a real bonus. Please also post the name, e-mail, and state/country of the burnerless recipient to JMDL. This requirement helps to ensure that the original Perma-Vine discs do not disappear over time. Please forward these revised rules to those you have already chosen as the next Perma-Vine recipient, and ask them to forward it to their recipients as well. The revised Perma-Vine rules are pasted below. These changes appear in sections 2 + 3. Thanks and enjoy, John Epstein CDTraderJohn@aol.com PERMA-VINE RULES: 1) When you receive your Perma-Vine disc you must MAKE COPIES FOR YOURSELF and re-post an offer on JMDL. You will forward the ORIGINAL DISC onto the next recipient (you may NOT keep the original Perma-Vine disc). This method ensures that all participants can get a clean, glitch-free copy of this show directly off the original disc. 2) You must re-post your offer of this vine only to JMDL. Once you have selected the next recipient, you must post their name, e-mail and state/country to the JMDL list. If, after TWO postings within a 48-hour period, there is no response, you may then, and only then, post the Perma-Vine offer to another group, but you MUST post an announcement to JMDL indicating which group you have transferred this Perma-Vine to. 3) By requesting these Perma-Vine discs, you have agreed to make this show available to those who are unable to burn copies for themselves (and, thus, cannot participate directly in this Perma-Vine). You agree to post an offer(s) on JMDL for at least one burnerless individual as soon as you have forwarded the original Perma-Vine disc onto the next recipient. You must post the name, e-mail and state/country of the burnerless recipient to the JMDL list. Additionally, you may B+P or trade this to as many as you like AFTER you have forwarded the Perma-Vine discs onto the next recipient. You are not required to post subsequent trades or B+P's to the list 4) You further agree to keep the Perma-Vine disc in your possession no longer than 72 hours before re-offering. 5) Lastly, you agree to ENJOY this music immensely! Huge admirer of Ms. Mitchell that I am, and knowing how she regards that label when applied to her own music, I wanted to let you know that of her 20 or so albums, only the first four were classified as folk music and it is a common misperception that she is a folksinger. She went on to write and record pop, rock and jazz albums and although she achieved her initial fame and fortune through the folk genre, she hasn't been a folksinger for at least two or three decades. It would be pretty tough to stick one label on her, mind you, but if you could, 'folksinger' wouldn't be it. Don't know if this will matter for TCE purposes, for it's a common assumption made when describing Mitchell she did start out as a folksinger, so people unfamiliar with her later music or career might not notice. But it is an error, nonetheless." ... and so on and so forth ... You can read the article by putting Joni's name in the search engine box at the site. I figure the Canadian Encyclopedia should at least have it right, don't you? It remains to be seen whether the editor will think so. On another note ... Joni, turn up at Jonifest? I can't see it. She appreciates her fans and has no trouble monopolizing a conversation with apt listeners, but I think the level of adoration from this group might be a bit distasteful to her ... she has stated (and I paraphrase) that she finds the personal adoration somehow deluded ... now how can I say this without hurting anybody's feelings ... what I mean is, she could be afraid of being mobbed, her clothes torn from her body as souvenir, her hair ripped from her head as a holy relic ... LOL ... I'm sorry, but there is a touch of that kind of fanaticism among this group who loves her so, although I'm sure it would be gentle ... and it could be a bit intense for anyone, especially the object of our affection! Joni is never going to be Michael Jackson, who thrives on the adoration of fainting fans. Joni is glad her genius is appreciated, but doesn't think being on a pedestal is a very desirable place to be ... think about it, would YOU want to be amidst a group of people ga-ga at your presence? She's pretty goodnatured and gracious, but ... drop herself in it? I just can't see it. This is one of those rare cases when I would LOVE to be proven wrong. Re: Kris, Bobby McGee and Janis, The story I heard (sorry, its been a long time and I don't remember who/where), is that Janis did her version w/o his knowledge, and after she and Kris were no longer together.
