Some are already circulating in other formats. I may try to get it copied and then if someone wants to be a branch, I can send it to them. 1. Topanga Home Movies 1968-1969 w/CSNY from 8 mm (I was wrong about the title but I still think the locale is Laurel Canyon and not Topanga and the footage is the same referenced in the show as "Laurel Canyon") 2. Unknown Late Sixties footage 3. Dick Cavett's Woodstock show 4. Johnny Cash Show 1969 and 1970 5. In Concert 1/70 British TV "Big Yellow Taxi" 6. Celebration at Big Sur 1970 "Get Together, "Woodstock" 7. Cafe Au Go Go 1971 8. Heart of Gold documentary w/clips "Circle Game" and "Raised on Robbery" 9. Dry Cleaner from Des Moines with Jaco Live 10. Whistle Test Extra 4/1/86 British TV 11. New York 1989 "Our Common Future" concert with the Herbie Hancock Superband 12. Promos for Flat Tires, Night Ride Home and My Secret Place w/Peter Gabriel. In the meantime, another place to try to find the Topanga/Laurel Home Movies is on the CSN tape trading lists, which you can find through internet searches. I've seen it there before and think that is where it originated. Some of these are already on previous trees, so if you'd like to complie 1 or 2 videos, I'd be happy to tackle this. If anyone does not have the following videos that have been offered through the JMDL, I will be very happy to dub them for you for blanks/postage or price for same. All I ask is that you be a bit patient with me as far as getting them to you. If anyone can send a list of what is on each of these videos I would be most appreciative as my typing skills are seriously lacking. (Secretary Mags??) 1) Video Tree #1 (2 tapes) 2) Video Tree #2 (2 tapes) 3) A Day in the Garden (1 tape) 4) Interviews and Songs (from the Jonifest 2002 gift) (1 tape) 5) I am also happy to make copies of commercial releases that are OUT OF PRINT. Not sure which these are at the moment. Rufuge of the Roads I think is one. Anyway, if anyone would expand in writing what is on each of these, and what is on the out of print releases and which they are, people can then e-mail me directly to get copies. This first song will be a repeat (since it's on "Hits") but the mix should probably start off with "Raised on Robbery." Assuming this is a "fun" pub where dancing might occur (as opposed to a dark, brooding bar), here are other suggestions, in no particular order - stir or shake: Night In The City A Case Of You ("If you want me I'll in the bar") Love Or Money Jericho (DJRD version) Sunny Sunday Sex Kills (Travelogue version) Ray's Dad's Cadillac Dancin' Clown (many will disagree) Shiny Toys Underneath The Streetlight The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines Black Crow Woodstock (Shadows and Light version) Okay, that's 15 songs - I could go on forever! These should be included for recognition's sake, but they're also already on Hits - you could certainly use live versions though! I noticed at least four: 1. CBC radio interview with Malka Marom and Joni in 1974. Much use is made of this interview as voice-over in the biography. Joni's voice is very young and light. This interview also formed the basis for the Maclean's magazine feature of the same year. 2. CBC radio interview, again with Malka Marom, in 1979. In this interview Joni talks mostly about her work with Mingus. Interesting how her voice still sounds pretty young. I remember listening to this interview when it was first broadcast and hearing Joni bragging about how her guitar playing was getting real aggressive. She said she could outplay any guy! 3. Recent interview, with Joni very made-up and her hair kinda fluffy. This must have been from the first version of the bio. 4. Most recent interview, with Joni sitting at table, her hair very straight and with much better make-up. Interesting that Paul Starr got a make-up mention in the closing credits. In the CBC version of this bio, the closing credits indicate that Malka's two radio interviews with Joni are in the Thomas Fischer archives at University of Toronto. Other little tidbit: Did you notice in the Joni/Kilauren home videos Joni is playing with her grandkids in a backyard and an elderly woman comes out of a door and then quickly goes back in when she sees the camera? I suspect that must be Joni's mother. Which leads to another question: why were her parents not given airtime? Aren't they kind of important? The CBC version, by the way, did not have the Come in From the Cold video segment. My question is...does anyone have the Blue and Case of You concert. holy shit. But I remember Sue Mingus saying at W2W something about some 3rd party (can't remember who) asking Mingus and Joni to collaborate on setting T.S. "Though Mitchell was fascinated by the idea, and spent time reading the Elliot book, she decided that it was not feasible - "I called Charles back and told him I couldn't do it; it seemed like a kind of sacrilege." - ------------- Does that help? Les ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 Apr 2003 13:14:01 -0500 From: "Marianne Rizzo" Subject: Woman of Heart and Mind Hi Joni Friends, There is so much to say about the PBS special that I feel that I just can't quite get writing here. . . with the feeling that I won't be able to be all inclusive. . . So, even though I am not going to be all encompassing, covering the scope of everything I think and feel, here's a few things: I thought Woman of Heart and Mind was EXCELLENT. On a scale from one to ten, I would give it a TEN! Susan Lacy and Everyone else who worked on it did a TERRIFIC job! The only tiny, tiny thing I would have like to see was a little bit more of a mention of Joni and her commitment to/expression of peace and Justice issues. . .( Lori mentioned a bit of this.) Joni's taking a stand on Peace, Justice and environmental (who else mentions the "e" word anymore. . .ecology?) has significantly moved me throughout my life and it has often given me the strength that I needed. And to comment on what Bree posted yesterday, quoting Joni: >"To me it's like can you get through this life with a good heart? And > >that's been my struggle, you know with all the injustice and >everything.. >things that piss you off.. you know. Try and get the heart to rebound > >..come back..and bloom again." >Thank you for all the beauty ..Joni ..insight...AND your good heart! >Bree Yes, I too am moved by this and Joni's reminder that in the face of personal, professional, and global struggles. . . keeping the love, "some semblence of a garden," is really the challenge we face in this thing called THE JOURNEY... So, for me, it is a reminder that life is indeed all about this journey. . .and what we make of it. . . how we respond to it. AND also, another ubiquitous theme in the film was/is Joni's search for *truth. . .and her expression of it. . .her commitment to it. . . I am eternally grateful for you Joni. . . You have given us so much. . . . You have helped me "shake my fists like lightening." Oh, and I am not done. . . And I have only seen the video once so far. . . but in watching this I was struck by the sheer volume of her solid work. ONe song after the next, in my mind, one "hit" after the next. . . Rows and flows of high quality, sparkling gems; pearls; golden stardust. And still we ask for more. . . more JOni , MOre. . . Tears come to my eyes now, as I too have selfishly asked for more. . . Joni, you have given us SO much. . . . so. . . THANK YOU. . . thank you. . . thank you. thank you Marianne _________________________________________________________________ Tired of spam? She's a very spiritual soul so I thought she'd "get it". She emailed me the other day saying she loves it so much she is usually playing it 3-4 times a day!!! (And each time she thinks of me ; - )) I sent a "notice" out to many on my email list announcing the American Masters presentation. Among other positive replies I got this one from my friend Beth: ......"Thanks to your shameless Joni promoting I just finished watching the PBS American Masters show featuring her. I'm dumbfounded. I'm wondering where I've been all these years. I've heard her songs in my head but never realized her genius. The TV I used did not have great reception for that station consequently the picture was pretty snowy. So I ordered the DVD of the show. This is definitely one I want to keep. I am transfixed."...... The first I heard of it was Johnny Nash, Bob Marley, The English Beat, The Specials. Also The Who in their early days would songs they referred to as "blue beat." In the early sixties Caribbean people brought their music and culture to England. I believe there was an album that came out of South Africa Soweto that Simon picked up on and made more popular. On a related note I saw some really cool guitars the other day called afri- cans. They are made out of oil cans. I guess people in South Africa not having 20 billion dollars to buy a fender or a Gibson started fashioning home made guitars from oil cans. A company has started to make them with aluminum necks and solid running gear, pretty darn cool, for about 400 bucks. I think if Joni was any kind of a kid or a teen, she most likely was exposed to world beat by the late great Ritchie Valens. I saw Herbie Mann and the Jazzil Brass, it was cooking! Like I said I'm a rocker so please forgive I had never even heard of homeboy before the show, I was very pleasantly surprised. No mosh pits at these jazz shows???
