What a story. I get chills every time I think about it. I noticed right away, too, that Kilauren's voice was just like Joni's. Can you imagine not knowing someone for so many years and then meeting them and knowing you were a part of each other the whole time? The fact that this one relationship passes like a ghost through all of joni's songs is so amazing. I was totally floored by the knowledge that the phrase "moon at the window" also ties back to the adoption. Amazing. Why no mention of the Rolling Thunder Tour with Bob Dylan,no mention of Joni's Vietnam protesting, barely a mention of the help Larry Klein gave her but now it's blue book time. Question 1,If Joni was a rock star groupie, would she go after Bon Jovi,BRUCE,Prince,Gordon Lightfoot in his healthier days or your choice. Question 2 Now that the special is over and there is no sense of future Joni projects other than an occasional gig like August at the Hollywood Bowl backing Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, what do you do with your life? a-get one,b-who needs a life when you can just muse about Joni, c-Joni's birthday present selection next November d-I'm going to Jonifest Question 3 If Joni agreed to come over and chat, would you ask about her a-lovers,b-early days on the road alone,c-the ache in not knowing her daughter all those years,d-the heck with chitchat, baby, let's dance. Question 4 If Joni was to paint her fantasy would it be a-mother and daughter,b-Free Woman in Paris,c-a blank canvas because she is depressed d-your choice. (I do get the good doobie award for sitting through The West Wing with Russ, while we taped WOHM. He kept assuring me it was indeed taping, but I was nervous...) So, I saw the last half hour, then rewound the tape and saw the first hour. A weird way to watch it, but oh well... It was wonderful. Almost too wonderful. I liked the candid footage the best, when she was being Joan, not Joni. I loved seeing the previously unseen photos, the concert clips and all. It was obvious Graham still has tremendous fondness for her. And Croz is still dazzled by her. I thought JT's clip was too short. My favorite part? The description Graham offered of watching her write. I also liked her telling about drawing deer and fire after seeing Bambi. THAT's what I wanted more of. The real process. The nuts and bolts of creation. The whole show offered a real insight into her overall inspiration. But I wanted more. Instead of skipping THOSL entirely, the film could have used the Hissing demos to offer more insight into Joni's unique musical vocabulary. (touched on briefly by Henry Lewey.) I would have liked to see more studio footage (it MUST be out there somewhere) in addition to the concert footage. Well, maybe next documentary... I just wonder. Also Ritchie Valens. I'm a rocker so if I'm way off base forgive me. I think joni stands out in her originality in general. To my shot out ears she stands alone, and, I think she influenced a whole bunch of other stuff I heard before her. Especially a lot of psychedelic folk rock stuff from England. I don't know if there is any other Arthur Lee fans out there but his songwriting and joni's have some similarities. Although Love has a more theatrical feel, and, Arthur is a real nut. Also Van Morrison's Astral Weeks, very poetry in motion, although with a more van the man feel. And in terms of poetry in motion, the thirteenth floor elevators, although I wonder if they were well known enough to influence anyone at that time, 64, 65. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@jmdl.com [mailto:owner-joni@jmdl.com] On Behalf Of Randy Remote Sent: Thursday, April 03, 2003 11:34 AM To: SoulQuest7@aol.com; joni@smoe.org Subject: Re: woman of heart and mind SoulQuest7@aol.com wrote: Personally, I > admire her for branching out, but I think it's strange to say she was a > pioneer in world music hybrids. Makes me wonder how words on the page divorced from the voice and expression of the speaker can communicate a meaning not truly present. Her performances: I have never seen her live. And don't have the videos often discussed on this list (except Shadows & Light). So the concert footage was new to me. It really was extraordinary how mature an artist she was in those early days -- I could totally understand Crosby's comments on seeing her for the first time and knew that his judgement was not hyperbolic nostalgia. In particular, the ACOY performance was stunning. Which of the videos talked about here is that on? Is that the 'pink dress' concert? Blue: I know it's a great work. Have always known that. But in the hippie dippie context of 1970 it's an amazingly advanced achievement. What really gets me is the restraint of the recording. The stripped-down discipline and focus. In recalling the sequence of her recordings, I often have to stop and force myself to remember that Blue is before FTR. Because in the evolution of Joni's work, it seems Blue should come after FTR. I don't know why I think this. Come In From the Cold: Never saw that video before. Wish they had played the whole thing. After the Mingus and WTRF sequence, that song was like a huge rush of fresh air. I think that it's one her last truly great melodies (until the melodies yet to come. I hope.) Perhaps it's because, to me, the vocal and musical style of FTR seems to fit nicely between LOTC and Blue. In some ways, Blue seems to be more "mature" than FTR. However, it's useful to remember that Joni was writing a LOT during the early days -- well, really all the time -- and some songs seem to have been recorded onto an album when the time or "theme" was right. According to the program footage from WOHAM (god I love these acronyms), Joni performed many songs several years before they appeared on vinyl. Even later, when you consider (for instance) Hejira and DJRD, there's a lot of material that has the feeling of a "bridge" between the two works. And you know there may be more ... in fact, I'm sure of it. Among many other things, watching it made me remember something I hadn't thought of in years: the first time I heard "Big Yellow Taxi" was on television, on American Bandstand. Dick Clark announced that this new song by Joni Mitchell was number one in Hawaii, and played BYT. I was just a kid at the time, and for some reason I decided this Joni Mitchell person must be a Hawaiian girl, and managed to mishear "They paved paradise, put up a parking lot", as "A great pair of eyes, ooh, what a Lochinvar". Perhaps, but imnsho (that would be, "in my not- so-humble opinion"), that's because it's the period when Joni "made it" professionally. Of course it's also the period that labeled her a "folk singer." A label Joni despises. As for favorite era, I'll cast my vote for the "trilogy" period of HOSL, Hejira, and DJRD. Lyrically and musically, it can't be beat.
