George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars were so totally awesome and entertaining! I was quite impressed! George Clinton sounds great - even at 62 - and is sooooo much fun to watch! The other musicians were equally great, lots of horns, sax, even flute, crazy characters up on stage, all smiles, singing, and having so much fun !... and they even played many tunes from the PARLIAMENT era, such as "Flashlight," "Tear the roof off the sucker," "Bop gun," "Up for the downstroke," and "Psychoalphadiscobetabioaquadoloop (aqua boogie baby/mama)." If you're looking for a great pick-me up and lots of fun musical entertainment, DO NOT miss this show if it comes to your town. I really enjoyed seeing the clips that don't appear on the televised special. I was a *little* surprised by some of her comments on Male vs. Female music. She says the male aesthetic in music is speed, and the example of the band she put together and lets the guys just go loose. She talks about the "male thing" and it's about war, football, loud, and fast, and a woman wouldn't do that sort of thing. I do not think we disagree here (although I think Joni ought to be flattered to be put in the company of the many composers she has recently been put in the company of via Symphony Space and now tonight). My point is, if you take the following categories (all in the realm of the singer songwriters), who else ranks high in all of them ? Of those, who comes close to ranking as high as Joni overall ? Composer (the melody, chord structure, harmonies, etc.) Lyricist Singer (studio and live) Instrumentalist (studio and live) Producer Contributions to the art of playing of her instrument(s) Oh yeah, a painter, too. Anyone else even close ? Take any of those on your list and do a side by side comparison. Like, at golf they list all of the statistics - Driving, driving accuracy, greens in regulation, putting, sand saves, scoring average, etc. If you are in the top 10 in 4 of them, you're Tiger Woods. As an aside, I noted that of the American Masters in Music, the only other women are all basically singers. Is Joni in their league as a singer ? Perhaps not, but some would argue that she is. Jerry, you'll be so proud of me - not ONE tear! I watched it with my Dad while I was taping it at his house...this was significant for me as we have shared so much good music together, he showing me an obscure Irving Berlin song or a clever Larry Hart lyric, and me playing Joni for him. Even if we don't share a specific passion, we both know that music, that creative art, is VITAL. Like Chris said so well, this kind of broadcast validates that WE know what so many don't, or won't take the time to get, and it makes me very special to know all of you. And of course I fell in love all over again with this amazing incredible woman. My wife's uncle in Madison WI sent me this e-mail immediately after the show ended. I have to share it: "I just finished watching the PBS American Masters bio on Joni MItchell. It was a very good music bio, which wove her music and her life experiences together very effectively. And for Joni that is of course the only way to understand her music. As much as you appreciate and understand Joni and her music, you can't quite understand what it was like to go through the societal experiences and hear her music contemporaneously. I liked the PBS show a great deal mostly because it helped me recapture the sense of what I was going though as each of her albums came out from 1967 through 1994. Since I am roughly the same age, much of what she struggled with at each stage resonated with me and what I was going through. I also learned a great deal about her jazz experiences, which only made me appreciate her more, as I become increasingly interested in jazz artists from the 50s and 60s, including Mingus, Monk, Davis and such. But most of all, I came away from the TV show feeling that there really are no modern counterparts to the singer-songwriters of that era. There are good solo artists who write good songs with intelligent lyrics; but there is something missing...maybe the paring away of the layers of the onion, as Joni described it. The show and the music created more than a sense of nostalgia for me; they triggered some very real and very immediate feelings that were co-mingled with the remembered feeling triggered by the songs. The result was some perspective on the intervening 35 years and what has happened to me. That is all we can ask of art, I think. I came away feeling that Joni Mitchell rnaks even higher in the pop music pantheon than I had previously thought, and I had thought a great deal of her. Joni seems to revere artists (O'Keefe, Picasso) who have continued to work well into old age, so I think she'll do the same. 2.) They totally overlooked "Dancin' Clown." I wasn't bothered by the lack of James Taylor content. My guess is that they would have had to get into some pretty ugly 70s stuff (like suspenders and heroin addiction) to tell that story, so Joni gallantly opted to pass over it. Who was it that said Joni stopped writing because she was reunited with Kilauren? Oh, yeah. It was me. After I wrote that, exactly one person told me how right I was on that point. Muller. Tonight, I saw some big-time music critic say the same thing. Joni's writing was all about a journey, a voyage, a loop, away from Kelly. Now that she's reunited with Kilauren, her work is done. I couldn't have said it better. Well, maybe a *LITTLE* better. As I recall I said "What good is catharsis if you're pain free?" BTW, does someone have that essay handy? I lost it when XP ate my "Keepers" folders. Lama PS, Following in Michael Moore's footsteps, I've decided to charge admission for access to my opinions. You are commanded to send me $8 each. Write me off-list for instructions. Do you think this is a free ride? You want me to spin gold outta hay, you got's ta pay. (The Boss via Rev. As opposed to the current jazz of Wynton Marsalis? Am I missing something? Galupo is out of his element, right? Maybe he was looking for a setup for his swipe at the 80's hairstyle so he took a introductory swipe at MINGUS. This isn't the way Joni remembers it, but downbeat magazine *LOVED* MINGUS. http://www.jonimitchell.com/downbeat79.html Lama PS, you will now pay me $8 each for this correction. Pony up. Scott Galupo of THE WASHINGTON TIMES said, >>>>> Watching footage of Miss Mitchell from the '80s is painful: The jazz experiments sound dated, the hair and clothes are cringe-inducing but everyone gets a pass for making it through that low, glitzy decade. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Apr 2003 02:54:03 -0500 From: Cactustree78@aol.com Subject: JONI PBS!!!! Yeah, well, I think a lot of us feared that but just didn't want to admit it. Denial, denial, denial ;-) Even seeing the show again tonight with it's implied conclusion, a flicker of denial remains. But she may still keep a foot in the water out there. She's still scheduled at the Hollywood Bowl in August to sing with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock and here's something from (her sometime trumpeter) Mark Isham's latest newsletter that sounds intriguing: "I've started writing songs for my next album, which will be my first on Arista Records. For this project I've invited an amazing roster of female singer/songwriters to join me in creating a collection of duets. I'm having a great time crafting a variety of songs for these women's unique voices." Hope springs eternal ;-) Kakki P.S. Did you see the major kudos Simon got from the interview with filmmaker Susan Lacy on the PBS site? ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2003 #113 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
