Prior to joining the FOX network in the 90s, Channel 5 was WNEW-TV. (It's now WNYW-TV.) As was the case with smaller broadcasters, the Metromedia group was starved for its own programming during prime time and for a period in the 70s and 80s ran reruns of feature films from 8-10pm most weeknights. Of course, they were littered with commercials for local retailers like Crazy Eddie ("PRICES SO LOW...THEY'RE INSANE!"),and time compressed to the point of being nearly unwatchable. BUT, they dug pretty deep and played films that were rarer and more provocative than the networks' infrequent offerings. I think she is much too conscious of her words to let something like that slide. I think the Five was deliberately chosen for some reason, maybe because it was a real channel she was watching, or maybe because that number held some symbolism to her, or both. If it was a rhyme of convienience, she could have used drive, alive, dive, hive, or live, or she could have changed the word jive. As a wordsmith, she seems to be very scrupulous in sculpting her lyrics. Even if it was a stream of consciousness thing when she wrote it, I don't see her leaving it in if it didn't precisely express her intention. Refuge of the Roads, in my opinion, needs Jaco - on Travelogue it seems slow and it drags on and it just doesn't have the motion it had. For the Roses just shouldn't have that big a sound on top of the vocal - it just doesn't need it. As for DED, I actually only know a few songs on it...I finally found a music store that has it and it should be coming in soon. i only have it on a record, which I don't get around to listening to much because the record player (and about every other surface in our house) seems to be covered with something...and i posted this a couple days ago just wondering does anyone know if a drummer Vito Rezza ever performed with Joni? bye! --- Raffaele Malanga wrote: > My copy of Travelogue hasn't moved from the CD > player since last > November! - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Help STOP SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Mar 2003 18:28:49 EST From: Jkp1953@aol.com Subject: re; apologies for error, roscoe & listas (LJC) wow. i was so enthusiastic with roscoe's take on "talk to me" a couple of days ago that i literally slaughtered my attempt to reference and comment. i'll get it right before i try that again. cut, copy, paste........whatever. tutorial from my son to ensue immediately. my most humble apologies to all, especially to you, roscoe (terry) that i fecked it up so badly. janet NP: laura nyro; gonna take a miracle :) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Mar 2003 20:00:04 -0500 From: "patrick leader" Subject: RE: Joni marathon in NYC paul and all: we have been posting about it. most of us new yorkers are going at some point, and we have a few out-of-towners coming. i think it's going to be difficult for listers to connect up (i can't get there until 2 pm, and someone has written that as the marathon goes on, there's a line to get in. some people have bought priority access, though the event is free) what i'm going to try and do is identify a restaraunt/bar near symphony space that could be a gathering place for listers that want to meet. after the event. also, some people are coming in for the weekend so we've been thinking about some kind of sunday activities. i've got a couple of thoughts: 1) the metropolitan museum of art. the place is huge, the best museum in the world i believe. lots of paintings (more than 20) by that van gogh dude. there's a nice coffee stand (with sandwiches and snacks as well) on petrie court that could be a meeting place. there's a temporary show of da vinci drawings that is amazing (though people who want to get into that should get there EARLY. we arrived at the musee at 9:15 on a sunday (it opens at 9:30) and there were tons of people there, but it's worth doing because later the da vinci show gets 2-hour lines and truly uncomfortable crowds in the galleries. the met is also pay-what-you-wish, and i usually drop a dollar. i go so often; they make their money off me. my proposal is that people who want to get together sunday go to the met and agree to meet at the petrie court coffee stand at 11:30. the people who want to get there early for the da vinci show can do so. the rest of us can sleep in. 2) this also looks fun. i just heard about it today. and $25 for a live music brunch in new york is a bargain. full disclosure: my company works with imani winds, though we didn't know about this gig. - --- I M A N I W I N D S and Friends, L I V E I N N Y C @ Swing 46 Jazz and Supper Club join us for a World, Afro Cuban, and Urban Classical..... After reading the many postings about "Talk to Me", I had to go get my CD out and listen to it. I am sure I've heard it before, but this is probably my least listened-to album (next to Mingus) and I couldn't seem to remember it... After hearing it, I have to say that it does have some very nice guitar (reminiscent for me of the Hejira sound) but the lyrics seem to be more juvenile than the usual Joni tune (ie, "til I pissed a tequila-anaconda") and much less "visually inspiring" for me than her average song. And the chicken squawk has got to go! One of my favorite things about Joni is her ability to inspire such marvelous visual imagery - like she is painting in my brain (OK. That sounds pretty stupid, but I can't think of a better way to describe it...) A couple of songs that are very visual for me are "Harry's House/Centerpiece" and "Lessons in Survival". Anyway, those are my two cents for the day. Long live Joni! Kerry BGet more from the Web.
