A drone would work, but I've been working on a harmonization of my own using Joni's actual track as the foundation. I do hear implied harmonies in there. It's not finished yet, but I think it will be very cool when it is. And it's interesting that you mention raga, because my inspiration for this idea came from a track on Indian musician Trilok Gurtu's album "Usfret," on which his mother sings a wonderful solo line which he harmonizes with synths, in a manner kind of reminiscent of Joe Zawinul or Lyle Mays. It's beautiful. Fred ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Mar 2003 04:06:48 -0500 From: ljirvin@jmdl.com Subject: Today in History: March 7 1983: Joni performed at Budokan in Tokyo. Yes it would appear at first sight that it's a cheesy pop rock thing. However I always felt that the lyrics were so intense that the music's main purpose was to make it easy to swallow the pill. As far as the themes Joni sings about, I wouldn't go as far as calling it schizophrenia. Just a glimpse of the real world IMO. Hence the "dogs" she refers to aren't her music mates but the business and the world in general. OK, stick a fork in my Covers #38 contest...it's done. Congrats once again to Russ who remembered that there was a "B" in his last name. No one from VA stepped up to claim a freebie. And Jack Merkel & Mags won the "guess" freebies - so yip-yip-yahooty for them! My pick this time around for all of you scoring at home was "Woodstock" from LOTC. (Jack, when you get a moment pass along your address & I'll get your frisbee in the mail...Mags, I know yours already.) Thanks to all who gave it a shot, and we'll see you next month! More covers are only 39 steps away! And, as always, count me in as a HUGE fan of DED. I can still listen to the album (CD) and enjoy it thoroughly. The music still sounds modern to me. (I know many don't like the arrangements.) The weakest song for me is Lucky Girl. I'm not overly fond of Impossible Dreamer, either. And I don't consider Smokin' Try Another to be a song. Still, I love the way the first four songs flow from one to the next. And I like DED a lot. It's become a favorite to sing lately. I think the juxtaposition and starkly different arrangements of Shiny Toys and Ethiopia is brilliant. We go from the hyped up world of California to the stark sands of Africa. And, I'm planning to do acoustic versions of Dog Eat Dog and Fiction at JoniFest. (Or maybe I shouldn't say so. It might drive some folks away LOL!) BUT, here's a different take on DED. Or the song lineup I would like to hear. I guess this would be Joni's political album 1. Slouching Towards Bethlehem (the NRH version would do) 2. Fiction (an acoustic version in the vein of NRH) 3. The Three Great Stimulants (the acoustic version) 4. Tax Free (an acoustic version in the vein of NRH) 5. The Windfall (NRH version) 6. Dog Eat Dog 7. Shiny Toys 8. Ethiopia 9. Borderline 10. The Fiddle and the Drum (Clouds version) All songs seem appropriate these days. But maybe that's always true. Ah for the summer of 2001 when we were preoccupied with stories about shark attacks because it seemed like there was no 'real' news... lots of love Anne ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Mar 2003 08:15:34 -0800 (PST) From: anne@sandstrom.com Subject: wanting to be Joni Lucy, thanks for your post about your efforts to 'be' Joni. I too tried, but, of course, failed. I did have cheekbones (my only good feature!) and waist long blonde hair courtesy of Miss Clairol :-) . In my teens and early 20s people said I sounded like her, which was the ultimate compliment to me. But alas, all that changed... I'm happy to be me, but I have to admit that seeing even the video clips from the CHC/PBS special have me "looking in longing on the sly" at the good old days. OK, so 'fess up.
