In fact the reason I went out and bought Hejira was that everyone on the list talked about it so highly and I thought I must be really missing something ! So I duly went out to buy it and I was so disappointed on first listening as previously I had been a total canyonlady blue type, so I think musically it takes a bit of getting used to the difference. But please persevere, you will grow to love it, there are a few I still don't particularly love but I used to skip the song Hejira itself and now I adore it - the words just blow me away. Song for Sharon always puts a smile on my face, Black Crow makes me want to go wild, Coyote is a great driving song, and A Strange boy just does something to me, it is sooo sexy, one of my joni favourites by far. So anyway, I agree with Catherine, give it a rest for a bit and go back to it, I'm sure it will grow on you, or vice versa! Or - you never know, and may I be struck down by lightening for saying it.. - you may simply just not ever like it, if we all liked everything in exactly the same way how boring it would be...... best wishes sarah - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Stay in touch with absent friends. The golden (ones) are in good shape - they're tanned and they're at the pool diving in and carrying on; the fatted (the fat ones) are just lying in the lounge chairs getting sunburned and flaking. I also think of the "golden" as being the young and beautiful ones (with or without the aid of cosmetic surgery) whereas the "fatted" are the older ones, past their prime, just lying around to catch some rays (instead of being up here in the frozen friggin' north, where they're threatening us with "heavy snowfall" today and tomorrow, and wondering whether taking the subway might not be a better idea than driving the car. Life & Times: Joni Mitchell (CBC, 7 p.m.) is the big Canadian deal. A wonderfully rich and detailed study of Mitchell's life and music, it's way better than the usual Life & Times quickie biography. A two-parter (part two airs next week), it will later be seen on PBS as an American Masters special. Mind you, she is Canadian. It's a richly detailed assessment of Mitchell, with a lot of marvellous footage from Canadian TV over the years. Best of all, it has many interviews with fellow musicians who assess her honestly and, sometimes, ruefully. Mitchell herself is an utterly beguiling figure, sharp, witty and self-deprecating. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Mar 2003 09:10:37 -0500 From: Bob Shemkovitz Subject: Re: Toronto Star interview/article on Sun, 2 Mar 2003 07:59:41 -0500 (EST) Catherine McKay wrote: > Today's (Sunday's) Toronto Star has an > article/interview on Joni in the Arts & Entertainment > section. It contains some info I wasn't aware of, mainly, that the film was produced by Eagle Vision. They're a subsidiary of Eagle Rock Entertainment, which has produced a ton of music related shows on home video. Not sure, but I believe they did Painting With Words & Music; at any rate, I know I've seen the Eagle Rock logo on many of the concert-film DVD's I own. I take this as a sign that the Joni film will be eventually released on home video...let's keep our fingers crossed. Judging by the preview excerpts on the CBC site, it looks like a terrific production! It IS a very strong song musically & lyrically...maybe it doesn't get its due because it has no accompanying instrumental part, but for me that adds to the power of the song. And it's also done in great style by June Tabor whose voice is a perfect match for it. Lyrically, what I find so moving about it is that in the first three verses she ends with a question, as if the conflict is avoidable, but by the final stanza she states the disappointing inevitability - "we have all come to fear the beating of your drum". Well, the show was spectacular - and I mean that literally as well as figuratively. The archival footage that was dug up and aired for the first time in decades was really astounding for a young 'un like me, and a lot of it was from old CBC archives, which was really great for a Canadian to see. (Did the other Canadians recognize a very young Adrian Clarkson sitting next to Joni in one of those old interviews?) Seeing Joni's virginal skin and that silken hair. I can see why so many men fell in love with her. Even though Mr. Nash was more my speed, Joni was brilliantly radiant! There wasn't much in the way of new insight into Joni's career or personality here. There was instead a lot time given to old recordings of Joni's, old CBC interviews and very, very rare home video of Joni kibbutzing with Neil Young, Graham Nash and Mama Cass. The most poignant moment came when Joni described how she had to end her relationship with Graham Nash and why she did it. Saying how she didn't want to end up like her paternal grandmother kicking the screen door off its hinges because she was so artistically frustrated, how she didn't want to end up crying behind some barn on the prairies knowing she could never afford a piano. It was very powerful. The praise that Joni receives in this documentary is amazing, from such remarkable peers, too. Basically, there was nothing new in the way of content or insight but a LOT of very rare footage and performances, rare, never-before-seen photos and home video. I'll leave you with an image of Joni running on the beach in California with a large red cape flowing out behind her - an image that figures heavily in part one of the documentary. I don't think any of you will be disappointed. This is a very tastefully done look at our Joan, featuring much music and lots of lovely images, both still shots and film. It also includes interviews with James Taylor, Graham Nash, David Crosby, David Geffen and Elliot Roberts, as well as Joan herself. Is there anything in it that the really fan doesn't already know? Probably not. I for one had never seen Joni's wedding pictures from her brief marriage to Chuck Mitchell, but I'm sure some of you have. And there were some recordings played of early Joni solo, as well as with Chuck - again, things some of you probably have in your collections, but not this lister. I video-recorded it here at home and also realized I could videotape it at the TV I have at work (sometimes I'm such an eejit that never occurred to me until today when I was looking at the little TV on my desk, realizing it had a VCR built into it, so I headed down to the drugstore downstairs and picked up a videocassette. It's very obvious the love the interviewees have for Joni still, especially Graham Nash. It made me wish things had worked out for them, as it's very evident how madly in love with her he was. If the only problem was competition for who would get to the piano first, then I'm sure they could have figured that one out quickly; still I totally get Joni's point about her frustrated poet/artist grandmothers and why she didn't want to get into a relationship that might make her want to kick the door down. I'm looking forward to part 2 next week and once again, I don't think any of you will be disappointed when this shows up on PBS in a bit less than a month. ===== Catherine Toronto ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Mar 2003 19:06:22 -0800 (PST) From: Little Bird Subject: Re: Joni Mitchell - a woman of heart and mind, part 1 - CBC TV Catherine wrote: Is there anything in it that the really fan doesn't already know? As a matter of fact there is a segment shown from the first time I saw her--a black and white CBC presentation where she plays Circle Game and fingers a chord with her index finger over the top of the neck. There's wonderful home movie footage both of her growing up and after she moves to California, as well as pictures from her wedding to Chuck (no love lost there, as Catherine has pointed out). Plus short clips of Joni singing in her folk club days and performing "Blues in the Bottle" with Chuck (I get the feeling that she was the draw in that duo: the performance was pretty standard folk fare except for the fact that Joni's voice was so divine.) My eyes got kinda misty a few times, watching clips of Joni swaying in the long velvet dresses she wore at all of the concerts I got to see in the late 60's. Did I mention I was so in love with her? For about 20 years? Interesting though that the first hour brings us only up to about 1970. That leaves one hour to span from 1970 to today. What I want now is to have access to all the footage and sound files that they used to compile this portrait. I must have it!!!! This is definitely a "no warts" portrait but that's the way I like my Joni best. Rick, rewinding as we speak. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Mar 2003 20:30:37 -0800 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: sounds like joni is thinking about her next project my new performing songwriter magazine came today... an interview with larry klein (who mentions joni several times of course, in addition to others he's worked with) & ends with this very hopeful statement: "so i'm trying to finish that body of work and then possibly another record with julia, and joni and i have been talking about some things" !!!!! woohoo!!!! another interview with rosanne cash where at the top of her essential listening list is joni mitchell's 'blue' & under new music reviews, ben taylor gets an A- while lucinda williams gets an A+...saying she has surpassed her two previous releases...can't wait for this one (due out in early april) this mag is on the web- i'm not sure if you can read the klein article there or not ******************************************** Kate Bennett: www.katebennett.com Sponsored by Polysonics/Atlantis Sound Labs Over the Moon- "bringing the melancholy world of twilight to life almost like magic" All Music Guide ******************************************** "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world, indeed it is the only thing that ever has." It made me wish things had worked out for them, as it's very evident how madly in love with her he was. If the only problem was competition for who would get to the piano first, then I'm sure they could have figured that one out quickly; still I totally get Joni's point about her frustrated poet/artist grandmothers and why she didn't want to get into a relationship that might make her want to kick the door down.< ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Mar 2003 21:11:05 -0800 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: Re: JMDL project >All I have to say is: JONI TURNS 60 THIS YEAR ... let's do something special.
