Lately I have been listening to the whole CD. Wow, what a masterpiece! I don't know why it took me a quarter of a century to "get" it, but thank God I finally did. Has this happened to you? Have you ever grown to love any of Joni's work many years after it was released? Am I going to be put in the JMDL slow class for admitting this? I know I probably couldn't find any other group on the web with less need of a Joni refresher course, but I have included the words to "Hejira" -- the song -- below. This is cut and pasted from the lyrics on the JMDL Lyrics page, so I hope it comes through without Martian symbols. Hejira by Joni Mitchell I'm traveling in some vehicle I'm sitting in some cafe A defector from the petty wars That shell shock love away There's comfort in melancholy When there's no need to explain It's just as natural as the weather In this moody sky today In our possessive coupling So much could not be expressed So now I'm returning to myself These things that you and I suppressed I see something of myself in everyone Just at this moment of the world As snow gathers like bolts of lace Waltzing on a ballroom girl You know it never has been easy Whether you do or you do not resign Whether you travel the breadth of extremities Or stick to some straighter line Now here's a man and a woman sitting on a rock They're either going to thaw out or freeze Listen Strains of Benny Goodman Coming through the snow and the pinewood trees I'm porous with travel fever But you know I'm so glad to be on my own Still somehow the slightest touch of a stranger Can set up trembling in my bones I know no one's going to show me everything We all come and go unknown Each so deep and superficial Between the forceps and the stone Well I looked at the granite markers Those tribute to finality to eternity And then I looked at myself here Chicken scratching for my immortality In the church they light the candles And the wax rolls down like tears There's the hope and the hopelessness I've witnessed thirty years We're only particles of change I know I know Orbiting around the sun But how can I have that point of view When I'm always bound and tied to someone White flags of winter chimneys Waving truce against the moon In the mirrors of a modern bank From the window of a hotel room I'm traveling in some vehicle I'm sitting in some cafe A defector from the petty wars Until love sucks me back that way Copyright ) 1976; Crazy Crow Music ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Mar 2003 16:17:01 -0500 (EST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: "Hejira" -- Oh, I get it now . . . That's a good question, Smurph and sounds like it could make for a good thread. I had to go back & make a chart of when Joni's albums came out and compare them to what was happening in my life at each one. I first got on the train at Clouds, shortly after it was released, when I was 16. I was immediately hooked & so went and bought Song to a Seagull. Over the course of the next few years I bought each album as soon as it came out, until Miles of Aisles in fall of 74. I was at university in Quebec city that year, so I missed this one. I did hear it later at my sister's place and loved it, but never bought it for years. Then went back to buying as soon as they came out for Hissing and Hejira. Then was a long gap and that's because that was around the time I met my (shit-head) ex-husband. So I fell away from Joni for Don Juan, Mingus and Shadows and Light. Got back on for WTRF and DED, then fell off the train again for Chalk Mark and Night Ride. Got back on for Turbulent Indigo (at whichpoint, I went back and bought CM and NR). Haven't fallen off the train since. Discovered JoniMitchell.com and jmdl.com just before Taming the Tiger and at that point bought the ones I had missed. The ones that stand out for me (of the ones I missed, that is) are Mingus and Don Juan. I don't think I had even heard any individual songs off either of these (except for maybe "God must be a boogie man" which sounded familiar for some reason) and it was like falling in love all over again. I don't think falling off the train - or running behind the times - is necessarily a bad thing if you can discover something you never knew before, or rediscover something you thought you had known. ===== Catherine Toronto ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Mar 2003 16:28:35 EST From: KJHSF@aol.com Subject: Re: Video Previews, OMIGAWD! I was wondering the same thing myself. Joni is seated with knees slightly bent before her and her arms are wrapped around them. At first glance, it looked like a photo of Stevie Nicks to me. I've always considered Joni strikingly beautiful, but those early shots of her glam-60's-era-false-eyelash-wearing look are just unbelievable. She rivals any super model of that era (or any era) in the looks department. And then, she reinvents her self by scrubbing it all away and out emerges the doe eyed prairie beauty! It's interesting to note that Joni peeled away the glam look to reinvent herself. For others, reinvention seems to be placing on one mask after another. I only liked about half of HOSL, so after 7 great albums with not a bad song on any I started to lose interest. I saw Joni with the Rolling Thunder Revue in 1975 at the Montreal Forum, She played Coyote which I didn't like at all and I never bought another album until Travelogue. I do seem to remember hearing her on the radio with songs I sort-of liked ( probably NRH ) but not enough to buy the album. I recently bought the Mendel Art Gallery book and when I saw the lyrics to Song For Sharon printed there it just looked like a personal letter to a close friend, I couldn't believe it was actually a song, having never heard it. And a good song it is. Travelogue has introduced me to some of that music I missed in the 80s and 90s. I now have a copy of Hejira, though unlike many on this list I wouldn't call it her best, maybe its the electric guitar that turns me off. One of the things I love about this list is the diversity of opinion helped by the range of ages. It seems strange and wonderful to hear of someone first "getting" Joni with Hejira or NRH long after I had given up. Looking forward to the CBC show, I nearly cried watching that first video clip. It wont happen again!! Anyway, I was asked how long i had been listening to Joni because this is what all you "old fogies" want to hear - why do you assume i am not an old fogie, is it because i cannot follow simple instructions about returning emails ? :-) Here is my Joni story - my brother was a big fan (student years do that to people and i missed all of that jazz coming from the old school 'university of life' way of thinking) and he taped "For Free" in a compilation for me. It didnt really reach me, i must have been around 24 at this stage and was living in London and doing BAD stuff........a couple of years later i moved to Bristol and hired Turbulent Indigo and Don Juan's.. from the record library and taped them. And fell in love.....with music, imagination, sorrow, art, everything... and oh yeah, Joni. I shifted consciousness in an artistic way and I havent looked back. I consider myself a fully fledged obssessive taking great personal offense at ANYONE who criticises or doesnt understandthis womans music. For the Roses is beginning to be a very strong timeless standard that does shift and move again each time but i REALLY have to be in the right mood for this to happen. In a recent digest someone mentioned "Nothing Can Be Done" as a weak track - the context and meaning of "weak" was discussed but that is not enough. The song is very far from weak. A song with that title is not going to be musically 'full'. The spare, lonely bass riff and tight vocal melody are all is needed (especially in the context of the album) to create a frustrated feeling of 80's wealth and the cold vacuum of love losing. Horses for courses but that song is magic. I was bored with the political ranting - or ego infomation swapping - that featured alot in the digest recently. We hear about it alot over here and of course it affects us all but we are not struggling with victim/aggressor mentality. It seems to the rest of the world that 9/11 posed to settle a karmic debt that the U.S is having a big problem handling...... anyway, i am starting it all off again.....sorry. "While most singers are rehashing old material on greatest hits compilations, Joni Mitchell takes it one step further. Mitchell delivers Travelogue, 22 of her most personal songs from the beginning of her career to the present. The difference here is that Mitchell re-recorded each of these masterpieces with a full orchestra. The singer-songwriter has earned the right to revisit her catelogue, as her voice has taken on a moody resonance, rich with wisdom. This double-disc collection takes Mitchell's astounding catelogue full circle, so it's apropos that it concludes with one of her earliest gems, "The Circle Game." As a speciall side trip, pop disc one into your computer for a musical journey featuring her paintings. The best perk of owning Travelogue is you can take this trip anywhere, anytime." What I found amusing was on the same page of this review, which I read first. It was an interview with a recording artist from Sweden. His name is Jay-Jay Johanson. I thought immediately of our own Jim (J.J.) Johanson from JoniMitchell.com. Then I look over and see the T-log review. That might have been one of my posts - I remember saying that the Klein-Joni compositions were mostly pretty weak. I guess you make some good points in its defense, but for me the melody is sorely lacking. I mean, without having it play in the background try and sing it. If you can, you're doing better than me. My mind draws a blank because there's just not enough there to give me to hang onto. Certainly not the case with the rest of NRH. Plus the lyrics are vague & cliched, the whole "my heart is a smokin' gun" thing. It's not that it's so bad...Joni's dilemma is that she sets the bar so high that sometimes an average song seems inferior. A couple of examples for me...when some of Joni's "Clouds" songs were on the radio, I didn't care for her voice at all. It wasn't until C&S that she really grabbed me, and I pretty much got everything elsethat came after as soon as it came out, still steering clear of the earlier stuff. I was really lukewarm about Mingus when it first came out, but that's most likely because I was into punk rock at the time. Now I love it...thanks again to Ron for prompting for me to enjoy it many times this week! And of course, I've gone back and picked up & picked up on all that early stuff too, and love it as well. Or should I say "March out"...anyway, here goes: This month's assortment includes contributions from me and: Stephen Elliott John van Tiel Sue McNamara (and thanks to Mark Tatum for a nice lead!) And here's the shiny gems contained within...(everyone now...OOOH! AAAAH!): 1. Barbra Streisand - I Don't Know Where I Stand(live): This is an unreleased recording from Babs' 1973 Daniel Ellsburg fundraiser. There's a little intro bit where Barbra admits her love for Joni, which is pretty cool too. 2. Solex - You're So Square: This one is sort of unique because they do a cover of Joni's cover of the Lieber/Stoller number. That is to say, they sing "toot & talk" which was Joni's alteration. Weird but fun. 3. Sea Chanters - Both Sides Now: The US Navy chorus...seamen singing BSN lustily. Don't ask, don't tell boys. 4. Itxaso & Daniel Perez - Cherokee Louise 5. Itxaso & Daniel Perez - Night Ride Home: These two come to us from Spain, and as usual the Europeans are always doing the newer Joni stuff, God bless 'em. This is the only other studio take of "Louise" that I'm aware of, and even though Itxaso sings in a very strong accent, all of the feeling comes through and these 2 are just lovely. 6. Pat Valentine - Chelsea Morning: A couple weeks late for Valentines' Day. A pretty instrumental. 7. Julie Felix - Both Sides Now - One of the earlier BSN covers, from folk maven Felix in 1968. 8. Karrin Allyson - Blue Motel Room: Followed by one of the newer covers, from 2002, and one of the best! Karrin takes this song one step closer to the standard it will someday be! 9. Euro Grass - Woodstock: Bluegrass from Europe (hence the name), these guys are great! Mandolin, Banjo, and other sounds to get those toes a-tappin'! 10. The Girls Next Door - River: I wish I had a River I could drown them in...college acapella from Illinois...IlliNOISE... 11. David Snell - Both Sides Now: BSN on the harp. 12. Lawrence University Jazz Ensemble & Jazz Singers - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: Another college group, but this gang does a lot better. Very nice musicians, and vocals too. From Colorado, the land of Les! 13. Ensemble Petit & Screen Land Orchestra - The Circle Game: Muzak. 14. Patricia van Nunen - Blue 15. Patricia van Nunen - Woodstock: Dutch jazz singer van Nunen scores 2-for-2 with these great interpretations, haunting & lovely. 16. Dust & Ashes - Both Sides Now: Cheesy I suppose, but I like the guitar & the harmonies. 17. Jazzbum - Free Man In Paris: Very nice jazz-ish cover, the Jazzbum is based in the Pacific Northwest, so if you get a chance to check him out, do it. 18. Susan & Fran - Chelsea Morning (Hebrew): I love these non-English language covers...this one's no exception, our first kosher cover! 19. Duncan Sheik - Court & Spark: Another unreleased goodie, this one from a radio appearance. The quality of the recording is good, I just wonder what ol' Dunc did with the money his Momma gave him for voice lessons...
