As Jimmy stated, Bette does a wonderful job with "For Free", with Barry Manilow playing piano and probably thinking to himself "Someday I'll do a Joni cover too!" (He recorded 'River' last year). I got this video a long time ago from a JMDL-er (ex-JMDL-er?) named Byron from San Francisco. I've tried e-mailing him a couple times but haven't heard from him in a long time. He runs a gift shop in SF named "Every Day's A Holiday", so anyone in the SF area who drops in can tell Byron that Bob says hi! We've talked here about the entire record running in sequence; in this review Jon presents it more as a "Newton's Law" theory that every song has an equal and opposite reaction. I could pull out some brilliant quotes, but the whole thing is brilliant and right dead on the mark. If you haven't read it yet do yourself a favor. Was watching the Further Tales of the City DVD last night. Michael tells his friend that her broke up with his lover over S&M. His friend tells him he didn't know they were into that. Oh yes, he said. I'm into Midler, he's into Streisand. It would never have worked. I roared with laughter. Later, while watching it again with the commentary, the actor said he had to be told what the joke meant. Of course I knew then that he was straight. BTW, Richard, the Midler line is from her Live At Last recording. Take me anywhere! Euclid, Cleveland! She says they are at the Bonne Court Hotel. One audience member yells What Room? Bette replies: Hey, hey. Thinks for six bucks he's gonna see the whole thing. My poster of her first tour lists the price of tickets> $4.50, $5.00, $5.50. My how things have changed! But I was listening to Miseducation the other day and this line jumped out at me: You are the ocean I am the sand. It slapped me in the face and I immediately thought: Now I am surf rising Now parched ribs of sand at his side Therein lies the difference between the genius of Joni and other songwriters. They each are using the same metaphor but with just 5 extra words Joni's is vastly more complex and descriptive. I guess we could call this game Comparative Songwriting. So true, David. Plus Joni's couplet is so much stronger because she describes herself as being both surf AND sand, her constant theme of freedom vs. attachment, as opposed to: You are the ___________, I am the ____________(opposite) Her writing is typically so cliche-free, I think that's why lines like "one big boo hoo" & "nice kitty kitty" rubbed so many the wrong way, especially when it's laid alongside of a brilliant snippet like "every disc a poker chip, every song a one-night stand". I like your idea of comparative writing, by the way. I'll have to do a little research & see if I can find some other good examples. Joni's gift of vocabulary and metaphor isn't approached by most songwriters. Add to this, her ability to compose music who's sound also serves the lyrical content. Many popular songwriters, no matter how much they may tweak the language in their lyrics, don't have the capability or instinct to structure melody or chord changes that evoke the feeling in the content of the song. In other words, someone else might be able to write a song about a strange boy, but the tune itself would not have that snaky, ebb and flow, sensual sound to go along with it; Joni structures the sound to mimic our global perception of what "strange" is. I was just writing off list to Mitch that Down To You amazes me because, even without words, the music itself is perfect accompaniment to those times you find yourself walking along, feeling somehow disconnected and connected to passersby. And though Joni is often cited for her lyrics, I don't think she gets near enough recognition for her talent for musical composition! Avril Lavigne has a song called Sk8er Boi. The lyrics I can cull from the horrible wall of sound; "I fell in love with a skater boy--I said see ya later boy" I told Tatum that Avril and Joni are both Canadian. I couldn't think of anything else to say. I felt so old. I have the poster from my local cinema, cost me 30p, for James Taylors film appearence "Two Lane Blacktop" which I believe is the title of a painting by Edward Hopper, probably my favourite artist by far," Night Hawks" also became a film, and I believe "House Beside a Railroad" was the inspiration for the Bates house in Hitchcocks film "Psycho." Back to the point, Lulu sang and appeared in "To Sir With Love" I know you love it !! Paul Simon turned up in a few films ?? Bob Dylan and Kris Kristoferson turned up in "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid" ?? Garfunkel who has a new album out, has done quite a few films. Someone on the radio said liking Paul Simon is now not cool, who comes up with this IN or Out nonsense. A friend of mine saw Paul when she was at Teacher Training college in Chester, he was doing the University circuit and wrote a lot of his early work here, "Homeward Bound" was written while he waited for a train in Darlington? A lot of American artists seemed to have hitch-hiked around Europe with their guitars in the 60s and 70s, maybe they still do, back then we had the draft dodgers too. Did I read something here about someone making a film about Joni,s life?? "Well everybody knows her, she^s the one to love" Jonathan Edwards ?? where did he come from and go to???
