The "other music" posts have been my favorite aspect of this list after the JC. I think this is a very good suggestion. I kicked myself more than a bit, but for a different reason: I was there very early in the morning to meet up with JMDLers and see if I could find Brian G, as I had a ticket for him (which he eventually did get; cool story, that). I had a parking space in one of the first rows in the parking field, and of course the JMDLers were going to end up as close to the stage as a person could get. But (former) codependent (god I hate that word but it's true) that I was, I left to go back to our B&B to wake my drunken friends, and by the time we finally got back to Woodstock, the crowd seemed as if it was half a million strong ... So rather than be in front with the JMDLers, I ended up a ways back and off to one side with said friends. Still ... > listening to that version of 'summertime', the fourth song i think. > jaw dropped. As did mine. I was stunned and elated, and I thought: "Joni has become quite the jazz singer!!" It was a remarkable performance, and yes, Joni was in splendid voice that day. And wasn't Kilauren there, behind the stage? I seem to remember it was the first time she'd seen Joni perform in concert. (Was Kilauren's son Marlin there, too?) I was thrilled to receive the cassette of the show soon afterwards (thanks again, simon!), and have listened to it many times. Brings back wonderful memories of standing there, tears rolling down my face ... It saddens me that so many of our long- time members have chosen to go "Joni-only" because of the overwhelming number of political/war posts. With this concern, and with the hope that those same folks will come back to the "whole" list, I am hereby withdrawing from further political discussions on the Joni Mitchell Discussion List. When a diplomat says yes he means maybe, when he says maybe he says no, and if he says no then he's no diplomat. Although Joni is a lady, I reckon she's more of a diplomat with her fans LOL. Hi Chuck, and welcome to the JMDL! What you've got is a wonderful recording from the BBC broadcast of the program "Joni Mitchell Sings Joni Mitchell", sometimes referred to as the "Pink Dress" concert. The broadcast date was Oct 9, 1970. I assume the venue would have been one of the BBC broadcast studios. The show is also available on video, and it looks like a TV studio; very intimate. I thought of another, sort of a twofer: "A helicopter lands on the Pan AM roof" First, 'copters stopped using the roof as a landing pad after that horrific accident in (I think) the '70s. And second, it's the MetLife building now. (sjc) For many years now I have been searching for both live audio and video of Bette Midler doing her bathouse routine from the early 70's. I struck gold with a full length video (Barry Manilow is SO pathetic looking in this...truly a roar), and a CD of mixed performances, both of which arrived in the mail today. Just before doing "Chapel of Love" on the CD, supposidly from 9/71, Bette says something about being joined by her friends Barry Manilow and Joni Mitchell (she didn't sound like she was kidding, and there was no chickle from the crowd...). The recording is NOT top notch, so I cannot make out JM's familiar warble, but at the end, Bette says "Joni Mitchell, everybody" and the applause go up. I know Bette often performed at both the Continental Baths and at the St. Marks Baths, both of which are in NYC (I believe; I KNOW St. Marks is). Does anybody have any ideas about this? I'm finding it hard to picture our Joan on stage there with Big Boobed Bette, Beastly Barry, and a host of hot gay boys in bad 70's haircuts and towels, but I suppose stranger things have happened. - -Chris NP: Bette "Shiver Me Timbers" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Feb 2003 22:35:54 EST From: Bobsart48@aol.com Subject: Re: California Lori wrote: > Darn it, Bob! As I posted last month, I have been sending my daughter a JM "song of the day" for two months now. Mostly chronological, with some exceptions. We're up to Blue, now, and today's song was California. However, my e-mail to her went something like "a song that a young woman visiting Paris might relate to today just as strongly as in 1971, no ?" Not exactly dated, IMO (except for "Sunset Pig" - leave it to Joni to use and yet artfully defuse that politically charged term). I wonder if that is the "For Free" cover that (maybe Jerry Notaro?) sent along to SCBob for the Covers project. It would appear I jumped the gun...her Drummer's name is Joey (either Mitchell or Litchell or something like that...30 year old audio, you'll have to forgive me).
