If it weren't for the radio play of "Help Me" and "Free Man in Paris", I would never had bought C&S. Had I not bought C&S, I would never had discovered Joni Mitchell. Had I never discovered Joni Mitchell, I would never had found JoniMithcell.com. Had I never discovered JM.Com, I would never had known about the JMDL. Had I never known about the JMDL, I would have never gone to a Jonifest and met so many fucking weirdos :~).................just kidding of course. C&S has a dear spot in my life. When Mags first joined the list we had a couple of private emails about C&S. I encouraged her not to be shy, and post to the list about C&S. Had I not done that, she and Brian wouldn't be married today. Does Joni actually have a preponderance of gay fans? Who the hell knows? Does Joni have more gay fans than CSN&Y, or Britney Spears, or N'Sync, or Jay-Z or Bryn Terfel or Etta James or B2K or Metallica? I have no clue. There has been no statistical sampling or research that I have seen. Has the overall fan base of Joni's fans been compared to what the research tells us about the population of fans who are on an internet discussion list? Or an internet discussion list devoted to music? Do we even know what the actual percentage of the world's population is that is gay/lesbian? Have we compared the demographics of Joni's fans versus education, income, or other variables? And since the population of internet users is probably skewered as apart from the total population because internet access does depend on income, is it possible that the percentage of internet users is higher than than the % of gays/lesbians in the total population? Do g/l people use the internet even more disproportionately because it is a vehicle for hooking up for a community that is dispersed, closeted, or remote? There are many many variables that have not been examined. I look at the population that I have seen at three Joni concerts and there was nothing specifically extraordinarily gay/lesbian about that audience (that I could discern by anecdote without statistical sampling) nor have I ever once heard a Joni song played in a gay or lesbian bar. So this discussion has been based on a most non verified assumption. I have no clue whether Joni's fan base is disproportionately gay/lesbian as opposed to the general population as a whole. Not to say that the discussion wasn't interesting but all anyone offers as to the truth of the proposition is how it seems to them by encountering people in here, and that does not make a valid foundation for conjecture. I know that I am being an asshole. But I am. Vince ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Jan 2003 20:45:52 -0500 From: Bruce Kimerer Subject: gay fans?! Vince That's exactly what I said... "...does Joni seem to have a preponderance of gay fans? I say 'seem' because there's no way for me to really know that one way or the other. The number of gay participants in this discussion list may have as much to do with the atmosphere and environment of the list as it does with Joni." I thinks it's important to acknowledge when one is being an asshole whenever possible. That said I absolutely refuse to label my Joni postings as JC so everyone else can write about whatever they want ad nauseum and not label theirs NJC. You know what, I don't care anymore. As a matter of fact, let's not discuss Joni mitchell at all. I'm only going to discuss pugs. In particular, my pug, Henry McPug. And sometimes I'm going to talk about greyhounds, but mainly pugs. No one was saying they knew the truth or had all the answers. In fact, I made it clear that it was just for the sake of discussion, and it was a fun discussion at that. And all this talk about JC and NJC...I really don't understand what all the fuss is about, frankly, and I'm an NJC subscriber. I delete about 30% of the posts that ARE about Joni because I don't enjoy the particular subject. Are we going to segregate ourselves into little sealed off corners of the list and filter out ideas we don't want to hear about, endlessly labelling and categorizing? "Oh, sorry I belong to the Court & Spark Only list" -"Well I belong to the 'Hejira/Travelogue version' digest. Please refrain from posting about the original Hejira. It really makes me mad." Had I not listened to you Jimmy, Brian and I would not be married today. I would not have taken the opportunity to show how Joni's life and music was woven into my own life. Had I not drawn the image of my daughter giving me my Joni Mitchell albums for Mother's Day some .. well over ten years later , Brian would not have read about how I "lost" my albums because I left them behind when I left a dangerous situation, took two year old aforementioned daughter on the train headed for Ontario...and because of the music of Joni Mitchell, I discovered that my own little green story was not the only one, and that the possibility of a life beyond the one I knew was indeed possible. Time and time again, Joni's lyrics, music, strength and courage have affected me personally and the lives of so many others. Because of the music of Joni Mitchell, all of us are 'here' and so many of us have made life long friends all over this marbled bowling ball. I love Court and Spark and cannot believe that it is thirty years old! Court and Spark was the first Joni album I heard and continues to remain one of my favourites. oh how boring. :PPPP Mags You open my heart, you do. Yes you do. - JM Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Bullock plays an attorney who is into alternative lawyering and she is espousing causes that run counter to the big development plans of millionaire Hugh Grant. In one scene, Counting Crows' "Big Yellow Taxi" was played after the scene established that Bullock is into the preservation of historic and culturally significant buildings/places. The song played well to the jaunty and bouncy nature of the film. By the way, the film has great dialogues and some very natural acting from Bullock and Grant (who plays shallow cads to perfection), but overall, the director does not seem to know how to end the story. Its like an extended sitcom.
