I'd say one criterion by which this can be judged is whether a song sounds like a standard *when it first appears*. Blue Motel Room fits here, IMHO: even on a first hearing, it has a timelessness about it. River fits into this category too, especially with its musical quoting of Jingle Bells. The Circle Game, meanwhile, has a nursery-rhyme feel to it, which I'm sure explains its enduring popularity. Obviously, this doesn't mean that a song which appears to have these qualities will necessarily become a standard, so I guess this measure is more of a song's *potential* to become a standard. By contrast, much as I love Hejira (understatement - it's my nfavourite song from my favourite album ever), I don't think it will ever be a standard - it's too long, too complex, the melody is too elliptical. I've probably mentioned this before, but a modern song that has a most extraordinary feel of permanence is Mary Margaret O'Hara's Keeping You In Mind, a sublime marriage of melody, arrangement and lyric which sounds for all the world as if it were a recently unearthed Cole Porter tune. It's a song that ruddy well *should* be a standard! The folk tradition is a rich source of songs that sound as old as the hills, even though they are newly minted. In the hands of a real master of the form, such as Richard Thompson or Kate Rusby, you could listen to an album and not be sure which songs were originals and which were "trad/arr". Although RT rarely records trad material these days, in the Fairport days songs like Crazy Man Michael and Farewell Farewell fitted in seamlessly with the hoary old songs of death at sea and adultery. Come to think of it, that sounds like a Nick Cave album... I have brought in a wealth of Joni's this past few weeks but the only one that I have played everyday is CMIARS. It must be the slick production (I prefer it to DED) and maybe the themes... lawyers, etc. The other songs that I have been made to listen is Sex Kills (I usually skip it when I play it at home) and Sire Of Sorrow (TI Version). I must say that listening only to the Travelogue version for the past few weeks, I have really opened my ears to the harmonies on Job's Sad Song, and the subtle guitar arrangement on the original version that Mendoza has brought to the fore on the current version. Sublime. I must say that I do prefer the Travelogue version of Sex Kills but it needs more than my headphones can manage volume wise! Also Dancin' Clown really rocks, not a favourite but I do enjoy the video of her dancing around the kitchen with the cats. And there is a song whose rhythms are very close to the opening sound of Harlem In Havana but I can't remember which, it might be The Beat Of Black Wings... In fact it is. What I love about this, is that it's an archetype you NEVER see in the Midwest, and rarely anywhere at all. I would see women like this in Santa Fe and in some places in Northern California. Well after that I started back (and forward) tracking through her entire catalog, got it all. Up till I started listening to Joni, I have to say I wasn't really interested in listening to the lyrics of songs, I was always more interested in the tunes. I'm curious about this. Have you heard it in surround? If so, how was the mixing handled? Did they pan the band members around the room, or set it up more like a concert with the rear speakers adding ambience and audience? Or something else? I'm wondering, because mixing to 5.1 is kind of a big deal, ie expensive for the record label. Also, while the back cover of the DVD does say "5.1 Surround" across the bottom, there is no credit listed on the package for "surround remixing" , remastering, or other new engineering, as one might expect there to be. RR ps For that matter, is PWWAM truly 5.1, if so, how was the mix handled? (one Amazon reviewer referred to the mix as "The guitar dominated watery/echoey "mono" sounding surround sound mix(no better in 2 channel stereo)", other reviewers complained about the sound not being great. I know for sure that "The Last Waltz" was remixed in true surround, there was much fanfare in the audio magazines about it. I guess my point is that it is much easier to do a "pseudo" surround mix than a real one. I don't have a 5.1 system, so I haven't heard any of them. > And, of course, you can always > choose to hear the original stereo. Lots of Joni references. Has anyone else read it? Has it been discussed on the list yet? Here is one interesting passage from the sessions in LA for "Tonight's The Night" in 1973: On August 26, Young and the band blasted throught five performances that would form the core of the finished record- "Tonight's the Night", "Tired Eyes," "Mellow My Mind," "Speakin' Out" and "World on a String." They also cut a track with an unlikely guest star. "Somebody said, 'Listen, open up another mike, wi've got another guitar player,'" recalls assistant engineer Andy Block. "We started rolling tape, and the most awful-sounding electric guitar came down the wires-a person slamming the strings as if it were a big twelve-string acoustic. It wasn't more than five minutes later that we took a break. I wandered into the room, and there's Neil trying to teach Joni Mitchell the difference between electric and acoustic." Mitchell had entered with Joel Bernstein and Young immediately handed her a Gretsch. Soon the band was plowing through a train- wreck rendition of Joni's "Raised on Robbery," complete with boozy off-key harmonies from Young. When Briggs later played Mitchell a tape, she winced, shaking her head over the racket. [Producer David] Briggs said he threw her out of his house. How dare he treat the Queen this way! I wonder if these tapes still exist. The author talks about listening to session tapes for this album, but doesn't actually say he heard the Joni part.
