I attended the Joni show at the Concord Pavillion in May, 2000. After the show, I wandered down front to see how some of the orchestra was mic-ed (it sounded so good). I got to talking to one of the crew and he told me that Vince arranged all of the "old" material (the songs performed after the BSN material) in less than a week before the tour began! Some of that stuff is very complicated (especially "Ludwig's Tune" and "For The Roses"), so I was doubly impressed that he cranked it out so quickly AND the arrangements were as great as they were. So yes, I think that just Joni let him go, perhaps describing what she wanted and then making changes after he had done the initial charts. Personally, I think most of the arrangements on "Travelogue" are stunning.... Like it says on the booklet: "Larry Klein would like to thank: Joni, for giving me the priviledge and honor of re-contextualizing her great songs. Vince Mendoza, for his great talent and for being a patient and willing collaborator." I'm pretty sure Joni is happy with the end result and there are many good reasons for that, but to me it looks more like Klein's project from a production perspective. Mendozza did a GREAT job with the orchestration AND the conducting. I'm a musician, and I can't think of anybody who could have done that better than he did. This album is great, I think. By the way it wouldn't exist without Joni, but producing such a project, that is dealing with conducting the WHOLE project, is certainly out of her realm, indeed. That's a mess to > fix properly if it's > really advanced. My sister had some weird thing for this involving placing tiny beads of glass or some such thing between the teeth (below the gum line) and gums, which is supposed to stimulate the gums to grow (something like that - it sounded very weird to me, and it reminds me that I must remember to floss my teeth regularly to avoid this.) My boss got braces when she was in her 40s and then had some horrible surgery on her gums too - - the way she described it, this could be what Joni had done, because it sounded very unpleasant. ===== Catherine Toronto ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Jan 2003 08:05:00 -0500 (EST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: re: top ten wish I could have been there with Joni moments Usually people are trying to break OUT of prison. Michael Barnes listed his CD's of Note for 2002. "Joni Mitchell: Travelogue" (Nonesuch **** out of 5) Like any mature artist, Mitchell constantly reassesses. This suite with orchestra fuses her malancholy songs of the road into a substantively new work. Her voice is no longer pure, but it has gained much in expression. Only non classical on the list other then "Wynton Marsalis: All Rise" & "Keiko Matsui: The Ring" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 03 Jan 2003 16:16:45 -0800 (PST) From: anne@sandstrom.com Subject: Joni's teeth and then some... From: KJHSF@aol.com Subject: Dentistry, You tell me...who ya gonna get I have a feeling Joni had her teeth bonded first, which would explain them looking a little too opaque and like they're almost sitting on top of her gums in the WTRF songbook. Then, she probably had them veneered, which looks infinitely more natural. (I've had the same processes done. I don't mind the dentist so much, so I didn't think it was that bad.) Ken asked about the Joni tribute. It's this coming Monday night. We'll give a full report. If I could change one thing in Joni's life, she would never have taken up smoking. Oh, and she'd still be writing and recording new material. I can't say there's a moment I'd want to be there for - it's her life, not mine. To see a word like "priviledge" printed as part of a Joni Mitchell album's liner notes really hurts. Holy crap (how's that for bad writing?)! I didn't notice that one. I read through the liner notes with hopes there would be no errors, after being distressed by the number of dumb errors on TTT. Proofreading is a lost art. You all should have been at Ric's faboo gathering tonight. But before I tell you about how wonderful it all was, I thought I'd fill you in on something interesting that happened at the dinner table . . . The checks for Jonifest 2003 were flying! Ashara (AKA SIQUOJF, She Is Queen Undisputedly OF Joni Fests) was there. And as soon as she mentioned that she was accepting deposits for JF 2003, a lot of check books suddenly appeared.(Sorry, Jimmy. The private room with the bidet and Barbie's Makeup Mirror is gone.) Anyway, I just wanted to remind people that this is the time to get the Jonifest accommodations you want. Wait much longer and you'll probably have to sleep under me! Tonight at Ric's was sublime. More on that later, because it's 1:30 in the morning here. But the short version is that Ric and Roberto and Ashara and Patrick and Maggie and Chuck and Barbara and I had a terrific time. While a winter storm was slopping all kinds of cold, wet stuff outside Ric's beautiful home in a quaint seaside town north of Boston, we sat around the fire and had drinks and hors d'oeuvres and talk and lots of hugs and laughs, of course. Then dinner! My, that Ric can cook! Delicious broiled salmon with a mustard glaze and perfect rice and a salad we all fought over. And dessert! An almond-flour cake smothered in creme fraiche and different kinds of fresh berries! I kept waiting for Ric to offer me thirds! Seriously, these times when I get together with the friends I've made through this list have come to mean a lot to me. So next time there's a gathering of JMDLers in your neck of the woods, GO! And remember, if you want to experience the Super Bowl of JMDL events, make plans to come to Jonifest 2003 NOW, before the accommodations you want are gone!
