To really produce an accurate, correctly-ordered list would take forever...so here's some rambling "wish I could have been there" moments: 3. The exact moment she figured out that chord progression to Hejira, you know, that very first chord change. You know Bob, as astoundingly beautiful as that chord change is, I bet it was the first thing element of Hejira that gelled, and was one of the easiest chord progressions to find. -Think about it, when Joni sets the guitar in a new tunning, the first step is to find where the chords are. (She mentioned that in some interview...) Anway, I imagine the first chord is the open tunning itself, then the bar 5 and 7. After that, I believe she puts her fingers into her favorite shape(s) and sliiiiiides them down the neck of the guitar, looking for the colors. Well the opening fingering of Hejira are pretty simple shapes and high on the neck. So I can't help but feel she heard something there... especially since she was after the sound of falling snow, so she must have been picking across the fret board in a rhythm and those two chords must have REALLY stood out. I believe the opening chords in Hejira to be one of the most beautiful chord/ melodic progressions ever. j. Anyone else have an "Origin of Hejira" theory???? Maybe we should ask her the next time one of us sees her. Or at least ask about "Don't Interrupt the Sorrow". ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Jan 2003 22:41:40 +1300 (NZDT) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Joseph=20Francis?= Subject: "Dental Hell"? Funny you mention Dinah...I'm doing a favor for the Mom of one of our best friends in town. When I told her I could burn CD's from LP's she asked if she could send me some of her favorites, and of course, not knowing HOW to say the "n" word, I said "yes". Dreading a box full of Dean Martin & Mantovani records, or worse, country music (she lives in rural West Virginia), I was extremely delighted to find the box full of obscure Brook Benton & Dinah Washington records, as well as the Rooftop Singers ("Walk Right In") which I also found to be pretty cool. To add some JC, I was reading the liner notes to the Rooftop Singers LP, which was issued by Vanguard who also had Buffy Sainte-Marie & Joan Baez in their stable and who courted Joni, but she turned them down as they were demanding 2-3 records a year! Maybe if she had signed with them, at least at first, all those early songs would have been released! That would be an interesting question to ask her, Bob...my own thinking is that she is brilliant enough to compose the lyric as it is sung and printed, although most of us aren't at the level to always hear it as such. We're much more comfortable rearranging the words so that the rhymes come at the end of the lines, just as you have done. Much like playing her songs in standard tuning as opposed to the "outer space" tunings she devised. You can do it, surely, but to do so takes something away from the genius & uniqueness of the compositional skill. I think you're probably right...the chord change almost sets up the nature of the intellectual soul-searching that is the nature of the song. And history shows that many works of genius happen almost instantly & spontaneously, sometimes even accidentally, like McCartney's "Yesterday". Joni's said that composing "BSN" was a quick affair, inspired by reading Saul Bellow's "Henderson The Rain King". She has had good reviews from Q, Uncut, Music Week, Attitude, Mojo and Record Collector (don't I read alot?). Infact I haven't read a bad one yet! NME didn't bother to review TLOG though, but I think you are required to throw a TV out of the window to get their attention these days. She does however get a mention in the crossword now and again. Yes, you are exactly right...while Joni could not have done what Mendoza did, she certainly approved the final product. And since she's self-produced, she is the one that ultimately gets the credit or blame.
