[Eric Taylor Subject: Re: How do you plan on living through the end? Everything and everyone changes. everything ends. everyone ends. the past has gone. the future is not here. all we have is NOW. Would I be upset if Joni didn't do another record? no. Would I be upset if Carly didn't do another record? No. Would I have been a few years ago? yes-back in the days when I still believed death was something that only happened to others and that I would live forever. When i became aware that I was getting older, that John was, that Joni was, that Carly was, that everyone was, and that the time to leave my place here is getting here more quickly. death is either the end or the beginning and nothing to be feared. but old age and disease and pain and suffering and loss are fearful. So do we let that fear spoil today? no. we put out music on and enjoy what is-what is now-what we have. There is no denying Joni has changed. I don't think those who don;t like the change are denying change and death. i don't think those who like the change are accepting death and change. for me, it has never been about Joni's voice. I just like her sounds, usually. her words and her music. The voice is just a vehicle. I am not explainign this very well. Yet my other fave singer has a voice that brings me out in goosebumps. the effect is different. in fact both singers couldn't be more different. The latter I can explain clearly why i like her so much. Joni i can't explain. I often wonder what it is I am enamoured by. shea appeals to my darker side for sure. bw colin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Dec 2002 21:20:22 EST From: Chorando6@aol.com Subject: Re: Karen Carpenter My first awareness of death came when my dad bought tickets for us to see the Carpenters at the Palladium, The first cassette I ever bought was 'a song for you'. I was so in love with karen. It was a childhood crush and when the concert was cancelled because of her failing health i was gutted, i just didn't understand why until later. I believe there was a strangeness in Karen and Richards relationship and one that can be better understood if you have ever worked with a sibling ( I work with two of mine) In no way am i defending the chap that wrote the comments about Richards sexual predilictions however I do think there was an unspoken attatchment that contributed to karens distorted self image. We can only wonder what went on between the two of them. What can be stated is that both Richard and Karen had problems stemming from their relationship with one another. Her death is a great loss and i often wish she were still here, singing with that beautiful beautiful voice, a voice like no other. also for those that have'nt heard it its worth checking out Karen dueting with Ella on 'this masquerade'. Are we really happy with this lonely game we play, Looking for the right words to say Searching but not finding, understanding anyway we're lost in this masquerade, Both afraid to say we're just too far away from being close together from the start We tried to talk it over but the words got in the way We're lost inside this lonely game we play Thoughts of leaving disappear each time I see your eyes and no matter how hard i try to understand the reason why we carry on this way And we're lost in this masquerade. love to all Clive xx ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Dec 2002 19:06:54 -0800 From: "kakki" Subject: Re: travelogue progression colin wrote: > Anyway, her voice changed years ago-on HOSL. Funny - I was saying that to someone a few weeks ago. That's when I went through my trauma with her vocal changes! I got past it to some extent but still mourned the changes a bit over the years. Strangely, to me her T-Log voice sounds like an improvement over past years. Yes, there are some aurally awkward moments, but overall I like what I am hearing. It may be because she is revisiting her old classics in a new way that I hear as very beautiful, so the vocal deterioration doesn't affect me as much. On another note - I have this, perhaps crazy, feeling that this is not the end of her music career. I really feel that she could come back in a few years with something quite awesome and original. Maybe this can happen if she can get past the bother and pressures of dealing with the ups and downs of the music biz and feel more unrestricted pure joy in creating. She *could* possibly defy conventional wisdom and do an indie project at some point. It is not impossible. I don't have a problem either way with this being the end or not. A great fantasy for the future is seeing her pop up and sing impromptu more from time to time in little cafes. I still read reports here in L.A. that she does this occasionally when the spirit hits her. Damn that I have missed those occasions! ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Dec 2002 19:14:10 -0800 From: "Toni Remmers" Subject: Re: Sweetest Voice Choice and JM Hi, I'm new. Been lurking..not sure if I'm responding correctly (technically speaking, help!)..not too into discussion lists due to time restraints. I've loved Joni since I was 17 and that was a while ago (circa 1972) and there has been no other to ever touch her, but because I would describe her music's effect on me as "stroking my heart and soul", I would like to comment on a few other artists that have also done this for me to a large degree in recent years. One, in fact, helped me out of a long depression and inspired me to pull my guitar out of it's case after three years and find my own voice again. I have come to love deeply Shawn Colvin's music, as well as Patty Larkin's and Patty Griffin's. I've seen Patty G. and Shawn's mentioned here. They are not Joni and I know they would not claim to be, but I do think their talent is awesome. Just wanted to share. Thanks! Don't even know the name. Teen flick from the last couple of years. Guy tells the girl about the great ones, three were mentioned somebody? Billie and Joni. Later on they show a scene with the girl painting herself into some album covers and one of the cover was Clouds. Pretty cool, the movie was okay. Hey anyone else out there love October Road! Whatever she has to say, I find worth hearing (even though I enjoy some things more than others -- but that's just my personal taste). T'log isn't the alpha or (I hope) the omega. It is what it is -- and I appreciate her generosity in giving it to us. I have a feeling that the last 2 albums have maybe been a way for her to sort through the past in order to have a clearer picture of what she wants to do in the future (it's hard for me to think an artist of her gifts would never compose again). Dylan did the same sort of thing in the early 90s -- and returned with Time Out of Mind. Debra wrote in response to John Irving's incredibly moving post: << Do you zealots really think that anyone who does not appreciate Joni's artistic explorations would bother to be on this list? You're not the only people who have stuck with Joni and appreciated her surprises for decades. The attitude that only people who love everything about T'log are true Joni fans and open to change, etc. is insulting. >> ZEALOTS??? Is that any less insulting than calling T'log fans "joni pod people"??? Geez, Debra, you've been on this list since I first joined in 1997 & should know a thing or two about flaming. There was nothing zealous about John's beautiful post! Perhaps you are blurring this with my comment a few days ago: *To me if a listener always skips over Paprika Plains when they play DJRD, they are not truly a Joniphile! Does this make me a Joni Fundamentalist???* I plead guilty to being a fervent Joni pod zealot. Now can you admit that you are an aging baby boomer wishing that everything was just like it was in the good old days? Last night I felt like slinking into lurkdom. Tonight I feel like just unsubscribing. I honestly don't understand why people get so bent out of shape over people sharing their heartfelt opinions. I totally understand why people wouldn't like T'log. This is the story of Joni's career ever since The Hissing Of Summer Lawns. What frustrates me even more is how dismissive so many seems to be about her increasingly gorgeous paintings. So many have been so critical of Joni wanting to give up music for her first love, painting. If we were really *true* fans, we wouldn't whine & totally support her artistic priority. Joni definitely has the potential to equal or even surpassing Van Gogh & O'Keeffe. How many Help Me die hards grasp the magnitude of Joni's post 70's artistic genius anyway? THIS IS NOT MEANT AS A PUT DOWN TO ANYONE. I'm just expressing my honest opinion.
