This man is a wonderful singer. To say nothing about arranger - but that's not at issue here. He's great singer. Period. And his last recording he's almost at his finest. And right now I'm listening (NP as we like to say) to After the Gold Rush - Neil's voice is far from plain. Of course I think this is one of his finest recordings. I haven't looked at it in literally years (was lent out to a jmdler for a time) but it is very different. It is interactive in a really magical way. It took me awhile at first (this was in my infant CD-r/net days) to figure it all out but that was half the fun. You advance through photos and collages and if you accidently click here or there, it takes you down another rabbit hole to a new scene and stuff. I finally saw little icons at the bottom of the screen - one was a heart - and clicking there would take you to the related paramours. It weaves in all the inter-connectedness of the artists featured. It took me several visits to see everything There was also a really sweet watercolor map which looked down on Laurel Canyon and had the streets and everyone's names on their houses. I should probably go take another look to refresh my memory. It is really a classic - with a very high level of charm - and I enjoyed it much more than the film on PBS. I think Joni in her interviews and other public speaking has always taken care to avoid being phony - that is anathema to her, IMO - you can almost see her gagging at the thought of feigning humility or false praise. However, that does not mean that she does not try to be tactful (not that she always succeeds - but I think she often if not usually tries, where her true feelings are somewhere near neutral). Here, I think she may have been employing that rare literary device called "euphimism". She could have said "affected" or "pretentious" (which is my guess as being closer to what she felt) instead of "ambitious". Do you know the photo I mean? Does anyone have it or a link to it? It's the most statue-like photo I've seen of Joni. It's the older Joni seated on the edge of the fountain in her garden (very park-bench like) and she is staring off into the distance, looking quietly happy and thoughtful. The wind is blowing her hair back. She is wearing one of her favourite Issey Miyake gowns and, yes, she is smoking a cigarette! To me, it's the perfect pose, the perfect facial expression, the perfect mood. I imagine it would be a artist's dream to sculpt it, given the intricacies of line and form. I hope someone can find the photo online or scan it for others to see. I have a copy of it but it's too large to scan. - -Andrew Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. I can safely say that this record will be remembered as being great. People may not know quite how to deal with it now, but in 10 or 20 years from now, people will look back at this record with a lot of respect and appreciation. It's so uniquely Joni. No one else has done anything like this before. And the results are rapturous, and lasting. The record's greatest track, in my opinion, is Hejira, and I'm probably just saying that because it's my favourite JM composition of all time. I'm allowing myself to be bias! The waves of strings over the drums and base, the swell of brass at the end of the song and Joni's dramatic and soulful retelling of this emotional journey is haunting. Thank god she did this song on Travelogue! I'm not going to rank the other songs in any kind of lame order, since they all have some sort of virtue and glimmer of gold, albeit some more than others. A week may not be a long time to decide on much of anything, but I know in my heart that Travelogue will stand the tests of time. - -Andrew PS: Leonard Cohen's voice is the most sexual, most gratifying male voice I've heard, to those who misunderstood my intention when I called it plain.
