I think that one way she could make a comeback a la Raitt, Santana or Clapton, would be to collaborate with current musicians (like Santana and Clapton have with Rob Thomas and Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds) either as a natural extension of staying in touch with the musical community or as a more calculated decision. But it's my perception that she never takes an equal or backseat role in collaboration, preferring to "drive." And why not, good on her. Which brings us back to the gender roles issue, perhaps -- the bossy, bitchy female artist in American culture is not exactly beloved. And she would have to play big stadium tour dates to promote the resulting comeback record. She does not seem to want to do either, or perhaps no one much wants to work with her, and/or her health prevents her from going on the road. A solo project, stripped down record would be so good... but I guess her current feel for composition doesn't go in this direction. She's an orchestral composer, "orchestra" meaning large ensemble. Their website lists only one edition, catalog #79817. While I could not save the USA Today web page directly, I did select, copy the text, and clean it up. Here it is in its entirety. USA Today - --------- September 05, 2002 - --------- JONI MITCHELL ORCHESTRATES RETROSPECTIVE - --------- By Edna Gundersen - --------- Singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell toured her past, journeyed into a new genre and trekked across the ocean for A Travelogue, her long-awaited collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra. The two-CD set, due Nov. 19 on Reprise, offers 23 of her compositions, freshly arranged by Vince Mendoza. Mitchell, who produced the retrospective with ex-hubby and longtime collaborator Larry Klein, recorded the songs at George Martin's Air Lyndhurst Studio in London. Tunes transformed from pop simplicity to classical grandeur include Woodstock, Amelia, Chinese Cafi, Flat Tire, For the Roses, God Must Be a Boogie Man, Sex Kills, Be Cool, Just Like This Train, The Last Time I Saw Richard and Circle Game. Mitchell designed the packaging, which features examples of her paintings, a book and extensive liner notes. Making appearances are Herbie Hancock, Billy Preston and Wayne Shorter. The recording sessions are chronicled in a documentary by Allison Anders (Mi Vida Loca, Gas Food Lodging), tentatively due in January. In addition, PBS will air an American Masters profile of Mitchell in March. - --------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Nov 2002 16:11:44 -0600 From: "J.David Sapp" Subject: Pazfest I'm running behind the time but I finally got the Pazfest discs. I just wanted to say that I heard Travelogue two days ago and it's stunning. The songs from Hejira are especially well done and the sequence on the second disc that puts The Refuge Of The Roads next to Hejira itself before going to Chinese Cafe is so beautiful and moving that it almost defies description. On another point, Mike Pritchard says of Woody Allen "I stopped liking him after he started referring to women as 'cunts' in his movies." While I understand people taking offence at some of Allen's personal conduct, and I agree that you have every right to stop liking people for whatever reason you see fit, I simply don't buy this argument at all. I can only recall this word cropping up in Deconstructing Harry - he certainly doesn't utter the word in Celebrity because he ain't in it - but in DH he was playing a misogynistic character. He wasn't appearing as himself. Maybe you don't like that word but a lot of people use it. Its very force in the film came from it being completely unexpected from WA - proof that he still weights every word in his screenplays. Objecting to someone's movies because one character uses an offensive word just seems a bit...odd to me. Characters in Philip Roth's novels (and Roth is said to be an inspiration for the lead character in DH) use such words all the time. Should we "stop liking" him too? Recent WA films I've enjoyed include DH and the great Sweet And Lowdown but others, such as the aforementioned Celebrity, are weak indeed. Yahoo! I'm enjoying hearing a refreshing sound to her songs. I am falling in love with songs that I used to skip when I listened to them. It goes without saying how disappointed I am that we may not see another album of original material from Joni. I was hoping her recent explorations into orchestration and reworking of familiar songs might have lead to a renewed enthusiasm and inspiration. In much the same way that Dylans two-album rediscovery of his folk roots in the 1990s resulted in two subsequent albums of great new material, Time Out of Mind and Love & Theft. However, if this decision of hers is indeed final, perhaps she might like to consider writing and publishing some poetry. It has often been said how well many of her lyrics stand up on the printed page and I feel sure she could produce a real stunner of a poetry collection. After all, there are precedents she could follow. The most obvious is, of course, Leonard Cohen who is highly respected as both a poet and songwriter. The Grateful Deads Robert Hunter is another great lyricist and a fine poet. I think Lou Reed, too, has published poetry and there are probably others I cant recall at the moment. Anyway, Id love to see a book of poetry by Joni Mitchell. It would help ease the immense disappointment at the prospect of no new songs. We need her voice in the world today just as much as we did back in the 1960s and 70s! Cheers, John (in Sydney) Yahoo! I just heard "Boys For Pele" last night for the first time. On vinyl. Oh, my! Why didn't someone recommend this album? :) > I don't know anything about Tori Amos, but last night I dreamed that she released an EP with a cover of Blonde in the Bleachers. Bob, do you ever dream about Joni covers? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Nov 2002 00:08:32 -0800 From: Michael Paz Subject: Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Jack Neilson Hello Music Fans and Joni Folk- It is my honour to announce that the Jack Neilson debut album "Here I Go Again" is in the proverbial "can". I finished it tonight about 8:30pm with the mastering and sequencing now complete it will be shipped to the pressing plant at the first of the week. I want to thank Jack in this forum for his trust in me with this project. The songs are wonderful and I think this record will be a success on many different levels. It took us a long 16 months to complete this project because of all of our schedules and family and such, but it is finally done. Details on how to order the CD are forthcoming and the CD release party has already been announced and is NOW confirmed. It will be at Tipitina's Uptown location on December 12 at 8pm. Giselle Hawkins has agreed to grace us with the warm up position along with our dear Cindy and there will be a Mini JoniFest in conjunction with the festivities including performances by folks from the PazFest CD (myself included) and special guest (my next musical challenge Ms. Christina Friis-Nielsen. I hope some of you or ALL of you can make it for this happy occasion. Thanks to all list members who have been so supportive of this project. I attended a taping of the Letterman show about 6 years ago and will agree 100% with this. During commercial breaks, Dave would stand up and pace nervously back and forth, ignoring the guest in the chair and barking orders to the stage hands. Seconds before the camera began rolling, he'd sit back down and turn into the animated Dave once again. I thought it quite odd behavior.
