Just listened to the three Jonisongs on WFUV...absolutely beautiful!! I especially liked TLTISR with the change of phrasings. Nice arrangements on all three songs (didn't know the first one). I definitely like these arrangements better than those of BSN. I have to agree with Bob though, about her weathered voice. I miss the vitalilty in it which used to make her sustain long notes and pretty vibrations. Christina, glad to be here, since in DK I probably would've had to order it especially from UK - causing a considerable delay. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Nov 2002 17:29:23 -0800 From: "Victor Johnson" Subject: RE: travelogue/songs that make you shiver > I have to agree with Bob though, about her weathered voice. I miss the > vitality in it which used to make her sustain long notes and pretty > vibrations. I miss that as well. It kind of makes for a bittersweet listening. Adds a kind of richness to the songs, knowing how they sounded back when they were fresh and hearing her sing them now...kind of sad and beautiful feeling mixed together, like when the elves are resigned to leaving Rivendell and Lothlorien and returning to the havens. not diminished in their beauty but weary and tired knowing that an age is coming to an end. It makes me think of one of my favorite songs of all time, "Losing It" by Rush, especially the last stanza... Victor NP: Beck-Sea Change PS: THIS JUST IN! Hooked up with an amazing singer from a nationally known group who will be singing on one or two tracks on Parsonage Lane...can't divulge any details at this time but am very excited! Losing It (Lee/Lifeson/Peart) The dancer slows her frantic pace In pain and desperation, Her aching limbs and downcast face Aglow with perspiration Stiff as wire, her lungs on fire, With just the briefest pause The flooding through her memory, The echoes of old applause. She limps across the floor And closes her bedroom door... The writer stare with glassy eyes Defies the empty page His beard is white, his face is lined And streaked with tears of rage. Thirty years ago, how the words would flow With passion and precision, But now his mind is dark and dulled By sickness and indecision And he stares out the kitchen door Where the sun will rise no more... Some are born to move the world To live their fantasies But most of us just dream about The things we'd like to be Sadder still to watch it die Than never to have known it For you, the blind who once could see The bell tolls for thee... - --- Victor Johnson - --- waytoblu@mindspring.com "Roses wait for the springtime, They sleep beneath the ground. I think Nonesuch is doing an excellent job of promoting Joni's new release. There's a big banner ad at the top of the Arts section of the online New York Times, with links to listen to -- and order -- the new lp. The notes on the site are extremely well written and informative, and the tie-ins with the PBS show and the documentary should give the lp a sustained momentum (I hope). I have been listening to Travelogue for a few weeks. In the liner notes, Klein pleads for an open ear, and with good reason. At first listen it's easy to reject some of the orchestration as cloying, or overly embellished. But the lp only grows better as one settles into it and starts to accept these new versions on their own terms. Some gems like "The Dawntreader" are nothing short of spectacular. Perhaps many people who still identify Joni with songs like BYT will finally discover the post-C&S Joni. Let's hope! I've been waiting for the release date to comment at length, but I urge those who had problems with BSN to give the new release a chance. A long way from >hearing her anger of the >60's and 70's. The most notable cut on this is the classic folk song "Barbara Allen". She has always wanted to record this but could never fit it in to any of her early (CLASSIC if I may add) folk albums. She will frequently sing this one during interviews or at her book signing lectures. This is one thing about Judy that really pisses me off. The flood of compilation albums with no rhyme or reason. The anthology "Forever" was necessary because this was a good compilation of her Elektra years(over 20 years on that label until she got dropped like a hot potato). A more formal box set would have probably been more appropriate but I understand that this would be an expensive venture for someone with fading popularity. So whats up with the bizillion other compilations she has put out? If she puts out another version of "Amazing Grace"... I just don't know that I'll be able to sustain my high level of respect for her and her music. I think Judy is a very good songwriter but if she is having a dry-spell then why not do what you do best. Interpreting the music of others. There are jazz interpreters, pop interpreters, etc... but lets face it, when it comes to finding an interpreter for the singersongwriter/folk rock music you are hard pressed to find someone better than Judy. Even she once stated despite her songwriting that she was an interpretive singer first. Despite what Joni Mitchell may have said in a recent interview about current musical standards, there is TONS of great NEW and old material out there suitable for Judy. Give us a real album again and stop the compilation, baby stories and X-mas CDs. I just saw this woman a year ago with Richie Havens, Janis Ian and Roger McGuin. She sounds better than ever, so Judy,"Stop the crap!" Workingwilly _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses. Interesting!!! I hope you are not comparing their version to Billie's version on Decca records. This version is high on the "sappy-angelic" factor because her typical producer for those sessions was not in that day (The rest of those sessions-BRAVO!!!). She has very good versions of this song, studio and live. I think they are on Verve. Also, Diana Ross (yes, i know she's a _itch but...)version of this song on 'Lady Sing the Blues' is a rock solid Pop/Jazz Version. The BST version, is it jazzy or are they sticking to their typical formula? Strangely enough, I don't have any of their albums, not even a Greatest Hits. Am I missing out??? It's like discovering new layers to these compositions, to these songs we all know by HEART.
