I get the distinct impression that Letterman is a huge music fan. For the MOST part the very artists he chooses, shows me he has a respect for good music. However, it is pretty customary to put musical acts on last, on most talk shows. I seem to recall a time, quite awhile back when his musical acts where the middle act. He may also put them on last so you know what time to tune in, and you don't have to waste your time listening to that dim witted actress! Plus let's face it Dave is a bit of a nerd and musicians probably intimidate the hell out him with their coolness - especially Joni! Let's hold our breath now... I just listened to Otis and Marlena on the Nonesuch website: I've always loved this song and I just love this version with what it sounds a 'contemporary' string arrangement. In a way I feel that these song previews are a bit detrimental for the anticipation - but I couldn't resist! One last thing: happy birthday Joni. I do think, though, that musicians in general get shafted on Letterman because of their last in line placing. Anything the runs overtime during the other segments takes its extra directly from the musician. I doubt its Dave's fault, though. It may be that he's intimated by certain people, and rushes through things a bit - I just found tape that I'd made in high school that had a Letterman interview with Bette Davis, and he's so nervous that he just stammers through most of it. Don't forget, the Letterman show is taped in REAL TIME. The producers fully expect to put the show on air exactly as it plays with a minimum of deletion edits. I was there at that taping. Joni's last visit brought with her some 70 odd musicians to perform "At Last." If anyone still has that performance on tape, you'll notice that the commercial break that preceeds her introduction is interminably long. The setup for all the seats and microphones and placement of the orchestra actually was handled smoothly and very quickly given the amount of work they needed to do. The "Rosie" show actually removed their set and configured the whole stage to accomodate the orchestra. They needed only to come in and sit down. Perhaps if Joni had a smaller entourage, there might have been some time for chit chat with Letterman prior to her taking her place at the mic. There was some perfunctory conversation afterwards but David was warm and effusive in his compliments. I would have preferred his producers pulled the plug on the deer tick thing and gave more time to Joni, but then again, I'm biased. Maybe we'll have a chance to see if Leno or Letterman can accomodate the orchestra AND get up close and personal with the artist if Travelogue gets promotion opportunity. I'll stay up. I was most impressed by the little 'tweaks' she does with the melodic line at times, inserting some bends & blue notes throughout. The only thing that disturbs me somewhat is feeling that while she has superb clarity & pitch, her vocal strength seems greatly diminished, and her ability to sustain a note seems very difficult.
