He had so many ideas. He was really good. << In my college days, way back in the early 30s, I wrote a piece for several horns and rhythm section, and the horn players stood around the piano playing right into it while I held the damper pedal down (which releases the dampers allowing the strings to vibrate freely in response to the stimulus of the horns). It was called "The Listening Well." It's kind of like the reverb of a huge cathedral or concert hall (or studio reverb) only it has more overtones and harmonics ... I call it "pitched reverb." A good example is Paul Horn's classic album "Inside," flute recorded in the Taj Mahal. In conjunction with the thick clouds of reverb, the usually monophonic flute becomes a chordal instrument. (By the way, Horn later recorded "Blue" and a couple of other Joni songs.) - -Fred ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Nov 2002 01:03:55 -0800 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: Manilow covers River yes, she owns her own publishing from what i understand >>Hmmm ...does she still get royalties for the covers of her songs? I also really like "Running For My Life" and "Times of Our Lives" from the early 80's. Similar to HTFL, with far flung topics and sounds. It is quite a moving thing - I know I had my hand over my mouth. (I dreamed of 747s over geometric farms.) That has a new meaning. There is a Copeland -Mitchell - Barber thing going on. Mendoza is a genius. Mitchell is a genius. It needs good speakers but my little computer ones got the point across easily. Stephen ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Nov 2002 20:24:19 EST From: KJHSF@aol.com Subject: Amelia The orchestration is interesting, (and I'm glad to hear) not quite as lush as BSN! I think it could be more minimal in its arrangement--maybe just with strings or a quartet with some reeds for decoration. What really bugs me is this: what purpose does the light percussion serve? Why have that faint high-hat tapping out the beat and the delicate brush of the snare drum? One of the things that is so inspired on the Hejira version is that this song which has the theme of flight, has an arrangement that soars as well, with instruments that provide space and air--the icy vibes, the slide guitar and the rumbling of joni's guitar seem to echo the sense of flight! Add to that, the odd measure of 3/4 time to punctuate the 4/4 further provides a rootless quality. If I'm not mistaken, there's no percussion whatsoever in the Hejira version, and the inclusion of it in this new version takes the tone poem quality of the work and attempts to put it into a traditional song format. And the plodding tempo adds to the frustration for me on a tune that should float. Don't get me wrong--I adore Joni and I'm sure I will listen to this new work over and over. But I feel about this arrangement the way I felt about the muddy VG8 on TTT--it could be so much better. My guess is that the tunes that are going to fare the best on this outing are the Wild Things Run Fast offerings. Feeling like an asshole critic of all expression, but wanting to start a discussion and hear other lister's comments, Ken PS-Happy Birthday Joni! Today was my 40th.
