I'd love to hear a report. "When All the Slaves Are Free: The Words and Music of Joni Mitchell" finished a critically acclaimed and well-attended run at Ottawa's Great Canadian Theatre Company earlier this month. The revue was created and directed by Bryden Macdonald, who also wrote and directed similar productions based on the work of Leonard Cohen and Carole Pope. Backed by jazz piano, percussion and bass, singers Elizabeth Beeler, Susan Henley and Mary Kelly took audiences on a theatrical journey through Joni's three-plus decades of work, performing 13 of her songs including "The Circle Game," "Big Yellow Taxi," "Both Sides Now," "Passion Play (When All the Slaves Are Free)," "Cherokee Louise" and "Hejira." The show ran from September 12 until October 5, and was sold out nearly every night - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Deb Messling -^..^- messling@enter.net - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Joni talking about recording STAS with Crosby: One of the things that we did that was kind of fun because of what had to be done to clean up the tape, a lot of it was lost, he had me sing a lot of it into a grand piano with the ringing pedal down. So every note I sang repeated itself in the strings. If you sing into a grand piano, the notes on the strings reproduce the sound of your voice, thats the amazing thing. It was so beautiful. If you sing into a grand piano, >the notes on the strings reproduce the sound of your voice, that's the amazing thing. very cool. a couple of contemporary classical composers do this. luciano berio has done a bunch of solo instrumentals he calls 'sequenzas' and a sequenza for trumpet has the hornist blowing at the strings of an open grand piano, while a pianist silently depresses the keys into various chords. so the piece is a solo. and it's not. even better is george crumb's 'ancient voices of children'. the soprano sings some of the texts (garcma lorca poems) directly into the piano. i heard this live a couple of weeks ago (my company helped produce a three-day george crumb festival here in new york in september) and i'm still dreaming about it. oh, by the way, live music rocks. patrick np - soundtrack, the man who cried ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Nov 2002 20:51:36 -0600 From: "Happy The Man" Subject: Joni Tribute Looking for a copy of the TNT Tribute concert on VHS.
