I hope this works Laurent. As Laurent says, it was really great and it made me reflect upon what the JMDL is about (that coupled with some sour notes recently) SO...is it a discussion list ABOUT Joni Mitchell or is it a list FOR those who like Joni Mitchell as part of their lives. I think this divide is where most misunderstandings arise. For my part, we only mentioned Joni for a short while last week at the McJonifest....so that gives you some idea where Im coming from. Two of the people involeved (my partner at Mr Singhs India...an Indian restaurant where the wiaters wear kilts....how kitsch can u get) on the Thursday and Laurent's partner on the Saturday weren't even into Joni that much) I think this list is brilliant Gordon PS The Steve Klink episode was a hoot [demime 0.97c removed an attachment of type image/jpeg which had a name of scot13.JPG" ; x-mac-type="4A504547" ; x-mac-creator="6F676C65] [demime 0.97c removed an attachment of type image/jpeg which had a name of scot9.JPG" ; x-mac-type="4A504547" ; x-mac-creator="6F676C65] ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Oct 2002 05:45:16 -0400 From: "William Chavez" Subject: joni on lesbians I don't think that Joni is trashing lesbian at all!!! I think she is trashing a generalized way of thinking by Americans that might make low voiced women seem like lesbians. She is obviously against this way of thinking from what I read. There is no doubt that Joni's voice has been lowered by her smoking and I doubt she would deny that, but she probably wouldn't exchange her current deeper register for her earlier higher one for nothing!!! While her earlier voice was beautiful her deeper register is so much more useful as an interpretive vehicle for her complicated songs. It definitely sounds MORE womanly and MORE sexy (anybody remembers Odetta?). Even in the early seventies she was mentioning the fact that she was able to sing lower and wanted to SLOWLY explore this part of her vocal range that most people were not familiar with. One thing, he something doesn't blatantly make a statement one way or another, I don't know that I would get too worked up about it. Joni did play at a well known lesbian festival in Michigan(NO MEN ALLOWED). I doubt she would have done that if she had something against lesbians or body hair on women. My family is from Spain and let me tell you I have never seen so many smoker then on the streets of Madrid. Men and women! They are all walking around the city very quickly and with a cigarette in hand. I always thought that cig smoking and exercising has got to be such a horrible combination for your health. I bet that smoke really gets down there. Most Americans don't walk while they smoke, it is my observation that Americans like to sit while smoking. Americans live a life that is way more hectic than Europeans and I think that is where that whole cigarette break comes in. I think Americans associate it more with relaxing. I've never connected that word before, but I have connected the song "Michael from Mountains" to Joni's daughter: Michael from mountains Go where you will go to Know that I will know you Someday I may know you very well How can you possibly get to know someone very well that is taking off on you? Well..... through the child they made together! Michael's (or Brad's) traits are passed down to his daughter. Michael leads you up the stairs He needs you to care and you know you do Cats come crying to the key Could this be the night 'Little Green' was conceived? Just food for thought. I'm running behind the times as usual, and for all I know this has been discussed already, but tonight I finally had time to sit down and read the Rolling Stone women issue. Now don't kill me, but if I have to hear one more time about how screwed over Joni has been by the business, I'm going to poke my eyes out. I wish she'd quit talking about it every interview -- it's either that, or something about how dismal today's music is. It just makes me cringe, because in every article, she's coming across as bitter and cold, with none of the witty, kind Joan we all know and love. And, all in all, considering that it has been a good 25 years since she had an album that turned a profit, she's doing pretty good -- LOL, I don't mean this to sound snotty as it sounds -- I'm just saying that I've noticed since at least TI that most articles are focused on her negativity, and it irks me. Anyway, that's my rant for the night.
