I DONT THINK SO...I know for a fact that Joni has publically and privately supported GLBT causes such as anti defimation & AIDS causes... she was only trying to say that if you speak with a deep voice people think you are a lesbian ..which is stupid ..but that was Joni's point.. that "americans", meaning the mojority of us believe that a woman w/ a deep voice is a lesbian (like a man with a high voice would be considered gay)..its hard to pick apart an interview because she doesnt have much time to elaborate...Just my thoughts. as a gay man i understand that we as gay people need to be sensitive but lets focus on the REAL homophobes... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Oct 2002 07:23:06 EDT From: StDoherty@aol.com Subject: Re: onlyJMDL Digest V2002 #314 In a message dated 10/24/2002 3:02:52 AM Eastern Standard Time, les@jmdl.com writes: > Date: Wed, 23 Oct 2002 08:31:57 -0400 > From: Bob.Muller@fluor.com > Subject: Joni & baby > I think Joni just uses baby as slang. " Nothing mean about it...and I know where you're coming from as that was also my opinion for a long time. And of course we don't really KNOW for sure, we can only speculate. However, we DO know that Joni as a writer is neither obvious or simple! ;~) It's almost harder for me to believe that she could just dismiss her adoptive experience in her writing (or that writing "Little Green" allowed her to completely process her emotions) than it is for me to think that it became somewhat of a subliminal filter for her, and her interaction with the world was in perspective to it. Gordon played in the car that CD of jazz Joni covers which he got from Bob Muller, and Willy and I were hardpressed to name any of the instrumental songs (except 1). It was embarrassing but histerically funny. Anyway, the interesting part was Gordon's friends were telling him beforehand that he was crazy to meet with a stranger from the web, my wife was telling me the same thing. And yet Gordon and I had no doubts that we should meet and IT WORKED, meaning Joni lovers must have something in common aside from Joni of course. My wife felt it the same way upon meeting Gordon and Willy. So JMDLers, do not hesitate to hook up with other members while traveling, it's the icing on the cake. I've been lurking here for the last couple of months, and just wanted to thank everyone (in general!) for all of the inspirational and insightful posts I've been reading on this list. All of you know so much about Joni; I am sincerely impressed! Not only with the depth of your knowledge, but also your willingness to share! I've been Joni fan since I saw her name on a Tom Rush album I had in high school. He recorded "Urge for Going" on that one, and I liked it so much I ran out and bought "Songs to a Seagull." Of course, I liked that one so much I bought every other Joni album as soon as it came out, right up to "Mingus." Unfortunately, that one kind of turned me off to buying new Joni albums for a lot of years (until I joined this list!). My "biggest Joni thrill" was when I had 2nd row tickets for her concert (w/LA Express) at the Mississippi River Festival ('75 or so). I bought the tickets in Feb. for the concert in Aug! Since joining the "Joni Only List" I have purchased "Night Ride Home" and "Hits." Not sure what will be next, but maybe Dog Eat Dog? Maybe. Or maybe "Misses." Have to wait and see what inspires me as I'm standing at the CD rack! Anyway, that's all. Thanks again for all of your posts; excellent reading.
