The only other influence mentioned was I think john Sebastian but I could be wrong on that because I was typing her so fast. http://www.npr.org/programs/wesun/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Oct 2002 11:58:52 -0500 From: "J.David Sapp" Subject: joni mention in usa today Renee Fleming is the rare classical artist who approaches the celebrity = of a pop star. Mia Ortlibe (havenphun16@hotmail.com) wrote (in part): "I used to think whoever wrote 'The Wedding Song" copied the melody from Denver's 'Rhymes and Reasons,' " and goes on to cite Joni Mitchell song which also seems similar. Whoever wrote "The Wedding Song" is Noel Paul Stookey, of Peter, Paul and Mary fame -- at least, as far as the "official" songwriting credit is concerned. However, I read in an inspirational magazine several years ago that (Noel) Paul doesn't consider that he "wrote" the song; rather, it came to him, or he puts it, in slightly different terms, he thinks he channeled it directly from God. The song was, in fact, created, by whatever means, for a friend's wedding. II. Today, on National Public Radio's "Weekend Edition," there was a segment with country-flavored singer-songwriter Kim Ritchey (or Ritchie or Richie). K.M. cited Joni Mitchell as an early influence, without much elaboration, and continued to cite John Sebastian as another influence, the genesis being that, as a youngster, she was treated to her own selection of a few 45's at a time, and liked the Buddha figure on Buddha Records' label - -- and The Lovin' Spoonful, Sebastian's '60s band, recorded on that label. More recently, K.M. has met and worked with J.S. K.M. and the interviewer went on to discuss the rise of Adult Album Alternative-format public radio stations, and how that, in turn, has contributed to a resurgence of singer-songwriters. III. I was quite surprised. It actually sounded pretty good. Has anyone heard any other "muzak Joni" out there? Once at the grocery store, I heard a muzak version of Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl". It was the silliest thing I ever heard. Very stacatto. The editors of Fashion have narrowed down their list to five boys and five girls in the music category. In the men's corner they've got hunky Hawksley Workman, gorgeous Glenn Lewis, refined Remy Shand, jazzy Jarvis Church and, our personal fave, sexy Sam Roberts. The noms on the women's side are sassy Sarah Slean, model-esque Melissa Auf Der Maur, pornographic Peaches, juicy Joni Mitchell and chic Chantal Kreviazuk. For a full list of the candidates in other categories, check out the November issue of Fashion. To voice your opinion, stop by the Chanel counter at any Bay store in Canada and fill out a ballot. You can win prizes and gunk like that, but more importantly, this is your chance to foist the virtues of Peaches on the mainstream Canadian fashion industry. Score! Naturally, there are tons of saucy Canadians that didn't make the list of nominations. In a perfect world, we'd flesh out the list with names like Rufus Wainwright, Tuuli, David Usher, Kim Bingham, Sloan's Andrew Scott, Julie Doiron, Buck 65, Martina Sorbara, Default's Dallas Smith, Lindi, Raine Maida and Nelly Furtado.
