I think that listening to this album you can almost expect that whatever is coming behind it is going to be great!!! I will say that I thought and still think that STAS is a better album than CLOUDS. This is one of the few times where I thought Joni took a step back. This does NOT mean that I don't like CLOUDS! I like it very much but it is my least favorite of her first four albums on Reprise. "Cactus Tree" is an increadible closing song. I can't believe she did not include it in Hits/Misses. Joni stated a few years ago(before the Hits and Misses) that she was working on a box set of really rare stuff (outtakes and demo,etc....) Did she decide against this project? _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Oct 2002 10:04:45 +0100 From: LXROSS@ctrl.co.uk Subject: Happy Birthday Roberto! There have been times when she has tried odd melody lines that go from high to low really abruptly but it doesn't work in my opinion. It works fine for Joni though. Joni is one of the few that I can hear go from high to low and not cringe. It's a shame that her smoking has eroded most of her ability to do that now. Now she just explores her lower and middle register and rarely tries to go high. I have NO idea what that means - obsessed fan?! ;-P I used to think whoever wrote "The Wedding Song" copied the melody from Denver's "Rhymes and Reasons". It wasn't until I discovered Joni Mitchell some years later that I realized "Cactus Tree" also has similar melody. "Cactus Tree" was written a year before "Rhymes and Reasons". Coincidence? Time of Man? Or did Denver think he could get away with this, thinking Joni as a woman would never make it bigtime? Shame on me for thinking this. After looking at the lyrics again, I now think he wrote this song for Joni. > > 'So you speak to me of sadness and the coming of the winter' - (Joni's early work was indeed sad and many songs were about the winter like "Urge for Going", "Winter Lady", etc..) 'Fear that is within you now that seems to never end' - (Joni's 'fear is > like a wilderland' from "I Think I Understand") > > 'And the dreams that have escaped you' - (Joni's 'my dreams with the > seagulls fly out of reach, out of cry' > 'Though the cities start to crumble and the towers fall around us' -(Joni's > 'But sand castles crumble') > WOW, Mia, not knowing Denver like you do, I can see your point! > I've noticed other similarities in Denver's early works like "Sunshine On My Shoulders" - the melody for these particular title lyrics go up and down > like Joni's 'with sun on my shoulders'. Also with Denver's "Eagle and the Hawk" 'and all who believe in me share in the freedom I feel when I fly' compared to Joni's 'share in the freedom of all flying things'. There are others, but this is just from the top of my head. > I have on occasion noticed other artists, and I have no example right here and now, who use a phrasing or alter a Joni term in their songs. Although I do see a lot of Joni in Shawn Colvin, whom I love! I do not have a problem, ethically with this. BUt pure copy or imitation attempts, turn me off! > Phoebe Snow's "Poetry Man" makes me think of Joni's "He Comes For > Conversation". > I love Phoebe and she is not mentioned here enough. I do see the influence between Conversation and Poetry Man - somewhat. And as with RLJ and Joni there appears, due to age to be about an 8 year lapse between Joni and the younger artist. I think the time is important in this analysis, becasue of ages of the artists and the era. > Fleetwood Mac's "Tell Me Lies" makes me think of Joni's "The Last Time I Saw > Richard". > Not sure about this one above however. > I've also heard similarities in Heart and Steven Tyler's work, but the songs > escape my memory right now. > > What about the reverse? Can anyone think of any songs Joni has written that might parallel an earlier song by another artist? > Hmm this will take some research and much further analysis. As far as artists period, I would think, Dylan & Cohen. But I don't have any direct examples in song. Since the singer songwriter doesn't have that long of a history, I can't think of many who came before and how they may have influenced the group that came to be in the late 60'sthrough much of the 70's. This group may truly have been spawned by the whole Greenwhich Village, Chelsea, and bohemian scene. Coming more so from the poet side than from the music. So they appear to me, to be the prototype of this genre. Thanks for the analysis Mia. I wil be thinking and listening much closer now. And no need for any disclaimer! For some strange reason I am NOT having an easy time ordering Pazfest. The first check I sent was lost in the mail. Ever wish you could explain your Joni obsession to friends, lovers, neighbors, and the occasional, troublesome homocide detective with a bad raincoat and haircut? Well, here's great news! MY GAWD ! ! ! This 2-CD set has nothing but Joni content. Dreams and schemes and coffee percolators and pachyderms and catapiller tractors and beautiful foolish arms. How can you resist? Fall in. Given the variety of the performers and the level of their performances, this is the Joni gift that just keeps on giving everyone on your holiday gift list more reasons to love Joni. MY GAWD . . . THERE'S MORE? What's more, every PazFest CD you buy benefits the constuction of the new Ruth Paz burns center. This means that, for the first time, children in Honduras will get the all-important 'pre-treatment' they need for their burns. Basically, what we all take for granted in other parts of the world -- quick treatment for children who have been burned -- doesn't exist in Honduras. Buy this PazFest CD and you'll help change that. But back to the PazFest CD . . . MY GAWD ! ! ! I didn't know I LIKED JONI MITCHELL THAT MUCH ! ! ! I don't want to mention any names but BRYAN THOMAS just leaked out! MY GAWD, how can a man own one of Joni's most personal and confessional songs ("Little Green") and make it his own? And you know, there's lots, lots more! MY GAWD ! ! ! I'll stop there, even though I am hearing other incredible stuff from these CDs right now. This PazFest 2-CD set is a remarkable thing for any Joni lover to own. The performances are ALL great, and it's a great way to finally clue people in to what you've been talking about all these years. MY GAWD, SANTA ! ! ! This holiday season, what are you planning to give all those people you've been trying to save from lives of quiet desperation? Socks? Lottery scratch tickets? McDonald's gift certificates? Hell, no. This year, give them the gift of PazFest . . . and save them from themselves! MY GAWD ! ! ! IT'S SO EASY ! ! ! Yea, quite predictable and contrasting Emily's Hejira summer association. But, back in 1997, I was impulsive and went out and bought the album while in Summer College in Newark DE. I was still in High school and had only Turbulent Indigo, Dog Eat Dog, and Court and Spark in my collection. Later that summer, when I was at home and swimming, I would put the album on as background music and it stuck. Every summer since then, if I don't have atleast one swim with HOSL, then the season is not complete. I guess what made it stick initially was lying on a raft listening to "Edith and the Kingpin" and the orchestrations sweeping over me, sort of caressing me as I floated gently in the pool. Yea, it is corny, but it stuck. And on a similar note, Chalk Mark in a Rain Storm and Night Ride home always work best for me, when I listen to them when it is raining. Maybe becuase I purchased them and first enjoyed them on rainy days or possibly when I am lethargic or thoughtful, they tend to shine on gloomy days? Don't know.
