Sometimes if things get hectic, I hang onto certain posts to read later - this was one. This should be required reading for anyone working in the mental health field. If you read them in the order in which you listed them, it's particularly touching. I knew some of the details of Jaco's life and death but still, when you read these in chronological order, it's very powerful. I got about halfway through and I had to stop because I was crying too much - it's so tragic, and the words "there but for fortune..." keep going through my head. If you don't mind the bandwidth, I'm reposting your whole post in case anyone missed it, but I warn you all, you're probably going to cry. --- Les Irvin wrote: > Joniphiles - > My never-ending search for Joni-related articles > found me surfing the Miami > Herald website tonight. Now, as I am in the local public library, the newest one on the shelf is Issue 906, Oct. 3, 2002, and it's not the same one. Therefore, I guess the one at the newsstand is Issue 907, Oct. 17, 2002. The Joni content of this post is that, alas, there is no Joni content in the poll -- unless I managed to overlook it. I skimmed it quickly, but think I saw every album, and did not see any Joni Mitchell albums, nor any Charles Mingus albums. There was, however, a Miles Davis album. I use the term "album" as I believe the poll did: For the muscial content + packaging, regardless of the physical medium, vinyl LP, tape or CD. And, of course, the poll was a popularity contest by self-selected raters -- not experts, not critics and not a scientifically sampled poll. Change subject: This evening, if nothing goes wrong, I am going to a Jane Monheit concert. I believe Ms. Monheit has been the subject of commentary here before. She is sometimes touted as "the next Diana Krall" and, like Ms. Krall, is a jazz-and-more artist, sings and plays piano, cites J.M. as an influence and does a cover of "A Case of You." Ms. Monheit also plays clarinet. To think... while I heard of Jaco's death on the TV news, aged 16 and not yet a bass player, I didn't know who he was. The full impact came six or so years later when I picked up Hejira. There's an official Jaco Pastorius web site, by the way, run by Ingrid Pastorius and other family members. Lots of personal messages from them too, which is so touching. They've had some issues too, from the usual low-life internet crowd, but seem to be getting over it. Well my dear Bree, at first I had my doubts for couldn't see anyone replacing Julie but now that you have expanded: yes, I see it. And perhaps in the sequence where the older nun sings "climb every mountain", someone could sing "ludwig's tune." mack > > > >How bout as Marie in the Sound Of Music?
