Judy had one son. She battled his father for custody. She was on the road supporting them all while her son's father accused her of abandoning them. Her son battled depression, drugs, and alcoholism all his life, then committed suicide just when he seemed to get his life on track. An artist friend of mine was in a private rehab center with him in the early 70's. He had painted a gorgeous Joan of Arc after Judy's recording of the L. Cohen song. I sent her a slide of it and told her he was having a bad time battling alcohol. She sent him a 3 page letter that thrilled him to this day. He still drinks, but he's still painting. Her Singing Lessons: A Memoir of Love, Loss, Hope, and Healing recounts her dealing with this tragedy. My signed copy from her is one of my "Roses dipped in sealing wax." Is anyone else surprised that WTRF is represented 4 times on A Travelogue ? I loved Be Cool on the BSN tour, but Hejira is the only other one represented 4 times. What do we think about the fact that there are zero tracks from DED and CMIARS? I didn't need to have any included but I think some would have worked: The Three Great Stimulants, perhaps, or The Beat of Black Wings. By leaving out these discs she essentially misses 10 years of her career. Just wondering. peace, david ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Sep 2002 09:29:48 -0500 From: "mia ortlieb" Subject: Mike Myers mentions Joni Hi all! I'm a little behind on reading my digests, so I apologize if this has been mentioned already. I ran across a piece on the internet from people.aol.com titled: "How Keith Richards Inspired Dr. Evil". Apparently, Keith Richards has the same pinkie biting habit as Dr. Evil, confirmed by some photos in a New York gallery. As Mike Myers was touring this gallery, he ran across some images of Joni and said: "Joni Mitchell is a national treasure. These pictures should be on our Canadian currency." That certainly sounds better than the truth, anyway. ;~) <> Maybe she didn't want to include those songs which were politically timely then. I don't know if the "fecking" line in BOBW made her decide against it. (I doubt it) I do agree that musically BOBW would have some nice orchestrated passages, replace those synths with orchestra. Impossible Dreamer might have been a good pick as well. Ethiopia would be a very powerful piece with full orchestra too. Bob NP: Neil Young, "Don't Be Denied" (Happy B-day to our Neil clone Victor! Which reminds me, her performance of 3GS at the AI benefit is so powerful - it seems as if only Joni understands that the audience is mirroring the lyric & the righteous indignation on her face moves me powerfully. peace, david ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Sep 2002 12:09:45 -0500 From: "kasey simpson" Subject: Fw: Blue/Bob Er...I guess this was not exactly a Rumpelstiltskin-level conundrum. But, yes, you are perfectly correct. Do you know the rest of the story? No, I don't. I did like the song though. Actually, River is one of the closing 3 songs on Blue, so I did highlight it without naming it. Note that Steve T's (Amelio Alamo's) reply of today also named the same three cuts. Yes you did, I guess I should read more closely:) I think many of us relate to this song. It is one of Joni's fortes to touch common ground by sharing her feelings and experience. Apropos of your anecdote, James Taylor (about whom the song was written, I believe) sang the song back to Joni 30 years later at the TNT tribute concert (which might be an interesting tape for you to view - I have shown it to a few non-fans, and it was well received). I am a James Taylor fan. Then I have a very eclectic taste in music. I like old country, Johnny Horton, Hank Sr., Patsy Cline, Brenda Lee. I also love old Motown; Smoky, Chi Lights, Bill Withers. Also Peter, Paul & Mary, John Denver, Joan Biaz, Janice Joplin, Phil Collins, Rod Stewart, The Beatles.........well you get the drift. The dark writings of JM put me in the mind of Jackson Brown. This weekend I plan on devoting time to Blue. Thanks for your input. Kasey Get more from the Web. NOt that he is talented. "For Everyman" "Late for the Sky", "The Pretender", "Running on Empty" were really good records and he still writes good songs (i had purchased his last album, Looking East, when it first came out and liked 3 or 4 of the songs) yet, there is something about him that is just sort of 'Melba-Toasty' sort of cardboard like. Right after two great videos from Patti Smith's "Dream of Life" album, I almost fainted when I saw Joni looking great and strumming and singing "Big Yellow Taxi" from "Painting With Words and Music" (which I still haven't seen in its entirety). Then, the real shocker. A video for "Underneath the Streetlights" from Wild Things that was erroneously titled "Streetlights." It was Joni (with an '80s Debbie Harry haircut), Larry Klein (looking very very young), with band, basically making eyes at each other while they strummed and she sang. At first the vocals were out of sync with the movements of her lips. But then it got it together and made me appreciate a song I never noticed off my least favorite Joni album.
