I've always thought ACOY was about James Taylor, for several reasons: Just before our love got lost you said "I am as constant as a northern star" And I said "Constantly in the darkness Where's that at? If you want me I'll be in the bar" Maybe the line "constantly in the darkness" refers to his drug use, which was pretty heavy for a long time. He's saying his behaviour may not be pretty, but at least he's consistent. Her response is that it may be constant, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's good. Oh I am a lonely painter I live in a box of paints I'm frightened by the devil And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid Maybe the devil in question is (again) drugs? I'm sure I've read several different places that James introduced Joni to heavier drugs than she'd previously experienced - maybe the fact that he was using, and still functioning (relatively) well, made her feel more comfortable about trying it too? I met a woman She had a mouth like yours She knew your life She knew your devils and your deeds And she said "Go to him, stay with him if you can But be prepared to bleed" I've always thought the woman in question was Kate Taylor, James' sister ("a mouth like yours" = a family resemblance), and knowing of James drugs problems (and his history of depression, etc.), she was warning Joni that he had some problems that might be more severe than she was aware - although she was still encouraging their relationship. Oh but you are in my blood You're my holy wine You're so bitter, bitter and so sweet Oh, I could drink a case of you darling Still I'd be on my feet I would still be on my feet I've always loved these lines. Like she's saying their love has it's highs and lows (and that's definitely been documented!) but she always needs or wants more. Or rather she can always take more - can never get enough of him. Too much is never enough. Pure supposition on my part, of course! It still remains one of my favourite Joni songs, especially the BSN version. And I've had the privilege of hearing/seeing Diana Krall perform it live, and that was just incredible! Hell P.S. Happy now, Bob? I'm posting, I'm posting! ____________________________ "To have great poets, there must be great audiences too." - Walt Whitman hell@ihug.co.nz Hell's Personal Photo Page: http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~hell/main/personal.htm Visit the NBLs (Natural Born Losers) at: http://www.nbls.co.nz ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Sep 2002 08:20:33 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@fluor.com Subject: Re: A Case Of You <> Yes!! And a lyric analysis to boot! Whoo-Hoo! ;~) Enjoyed reading the thoughts on ACOY. I would guess it's about JT, but to me the strength of the song is its universality and the way we get to make it our own. I'll bet if any of us were singing it, we would not be thinking of James Taylor but rather the significant subject in our own head. That's why it works so well for Krall & others, you really feel like they are singing it to their own "JT". Remember too, that the lyrics evolved a bit from what she originally wrote... Showbiz web site: There's a wee bit of Canadian content in Matt Dillon's feature directorial debut, City Of Ghosts. While the credits role at the end of the movie, you can hear Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now being sung -- in Khmer. Turns out the band is none other than Dengue Fever, who hail from Los Angeles. "The only Khmer in that group is the lead singer, Nimol. She's a wonderful, charismatic girl," Dillon told The Sun yesterday. "They're from California mostly and the guys in the band are great guys. They shared the same love of Cambodia that I did. And then I thought, 'Well, it would be great to get them to do something,' and I said, 'Well, what else are you guys doing? Any interesting covers?' They say, 'What do you think of Both Sides Now?' And I said, 'If you do Both Sides Now that's got a very good chance of ending (the movie). And I thought it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever heard." - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Deb Messling -^..^- messling@enter.net - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. I do apologise to Catman and Gerald McNamara - you contacted me a long while ago and I'm only just replying. Our family has grown from two girls to two girls and two boys. On August 6th, Aidan Vincent and Curtis Devin joined us and though falling pregnant again and discovering they are twins was a shock, it's been the most wonderful surprise in the past couple of years! I had to share this joy with all on the List although it's been years since I've been actively contributing. So here's to new beginnings and unexpected turns! I never expected to be a 27 year old mother of 4 but it is a joy and a blessing. Joni content - The Astor (a cinema in Melbourne) recently showed The Last Waltz and we took the babies to "hear" with it us. The music was fabulous... Evan (my husband) and I knew little about The Band so we found the music excellent and the live performances riveting (scary outfit from Van Morrison!) but the interview with the band members were incoherent and disappointing. Half the time we couldn't hear what they were saying. Joni looked and sounded terrific but I thought she looked somewhat bemused by the tempo of the song. Were they going a little faster than what she expected? Vanessa in Melbourne!
