Or, if your friend hasn't done so already, get them to loan you what they have. Most of us Joniphiles are MORE than happy to share our recordings if we can gain a new convert! ;~) Sometimes her work is not easily absorbed, so don't be afraid if you don't "get" or even "like" something on first listen. Joni has repeatedly said that she was "vilified" for the project. My recollection is closer to the one Mr. Lamadoo restates here. The only reason I can speculate for Joni's perception of "Mingus"' acceptance was poor sales given the success that Steely Dan was having with "Aja" at the same time. That jazz infused pop record was alot more hooky hence much more certain for airplay. Steely Dan unwittingly stole Joni's jazz crown, although HOSL had broken the mold years before. For "Mingus" Joni went into the kitchen armed with the most esoteric and intensely flavored ingredients. I don't think she could be disappointed with the results. In my (Italian) family, we have a saying, "if your hands don't get dirty, the food won't taste good." This image said it all: the cover of DownBeat had a "Shadows and Light" tour photo on it. There were two names on the cover in reference to stories within. The one set in SMALLER type was Count Basie! If that wasn't enough acceptance from the jazz press, I don't know what would have satisfied Joni in that regard. Maybe the phone call that never came from Miles would have made it all worthwhile...either way, "Mingus" is an exceptional piece. CC "Nobody's harder on me than me. As far as my recollection does, Downbeat's extravagantly positively review of Mingus was a minority opinion. I recall a lot of reviews that were cautiously positive, with some reservations. Howerver, Mingus **certainly** wasn't "vilified." And on a related note, for the sake of the JMDL newcomers, please be aware that, despite Joni's frequent assertion, Rolling Stone did NOT name HOSL as worst album of the year! Joni has not had an easy life or an easy career, but I think she makes it worse for herself with these negative -- and distorted -- recollections. I've occasionally fantasized about tabulating all her rave reviews over the years and sending her the results with a little note telling her to stop griping! I know I ignored it at the time, mostly based on the negative reviews it got. I didn't hear it until a friend bought a tape of it and gave it me, knowing I was a Joni fan, and saying that she hated it. This would have been around '88 or so. So I listened to it and thought it was great! (Although I'd trade all of the "raps" for another song). BUT it's probably a good thing I didn't pick it up when it first came out...I was into more radical sounds at the time and wouldn't have appreciated it. I can't help but wonder if Joni Mitchell is in any way the inspiration for the new movie, "The Banger Sisters" starring Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon. I was up in the balcony for the taping of "An All Star Tribute to Joni Mitchell" in April 2000, and I was struck by the frequent, friendly exchanges between two of the audience members near the stage that night: Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon. Susan Sarandon spoke during the evening, introducing one of the pre-taped segments about Joni (focusing on her gifts as a songwriter, I believe) and then she introduced a barefoot k.d. lang. Goldie Hawn, however, didn't participate officially, but she was grooving in her seat and appeared to be having a great time with her son, Wyatt. Sometime later, I heard that these two women were planning to make a movie about two aging rock groupies--probably around the time "Almost Famous" (with GH's daughter, Kate Hudson) was released. Well, in case you're counting, this is my second post to the JMDL. No puns this time ("The Banger Sisters" hits theaters, for example)--I learned my lesson. Mostly, I prefer "lurkdom." The last 2 1/2 years I have been a pretty big RY fan and the idea of him and Joni collaborating or just having his guitar behind her voice with the same orchestral maneuvers as "both sides Now" as the background, excites me. I really do hope he is on the album. I am content with the song selection. I will love to hear "Sex Kills" with orchestration eventhough i am a bit skeptical. I am a bit upset that nothing from Hissing is on there. That's pretty amusing, considering what it means in English - either the sound of rain falling down (with pitter, as in pitter-patter) or the sound of baby footsteps (the pitter-patter of little feet), or a kind of speaking, as in a comedian doing a monologue - we call it his/her patter. > But what's that word "Ta-ta's" about?!
