I am living in Vancouver....haven't been out much at jams or things like that since I've been here, but I think the Railway Club (www.therailwayclub.com) has some open stages. They used to have something called "Girls with Guitars" every couple of weeks, a kind of jam, but I don't know if that's still happening. And I know of a couple songwriters circles I could put you in touch with. Vancouver is a beautiful city....lots of interesting, inexpensive dining (best, cheapest sushi anywhere), a vibrant downtown that works both as a center of commerce and as well as a happening place to live. I live right downtown in the heart of the West End, near English Bay, a few blocks from the water in a queer-friendly district that boasts the most densely populated square mile in North America (www.seethewestend.com) Let me know when you're coming, Angela. I will show you around, and check out some music too, if you're interested. There is nothing better than having people whose talent and creativity leave you in awe, say they like yer stuff too! My god I can't wait to hear everyone's set again. I have always had trouble getting beyond the production of WTRF (with the exception of Chinese Cafe). The production on Hejira and C&S for e.g. is so timeless - and WTRF sounds dated. So to hear you do Flat Tires was like, oh that IS a great song. Anyway, we already have some of those recordings...just got a nice copy of Duncan Shiek's "Court & Spark" that he did during an in-studio radio broadcast... In the meantime, there's a new Joni tribute from The Steve Klink Trio that's quite good, the full-length "Big Yellow Taxi" tribute from Denmark that's gotten raves here, and of course countless volumes of Joni covers from yours truly. Listen to Elton's "11/17/70" when he was a road warrior, singing every night. Compare to "Caribou" when he was getting fat and happy. Happy & homebound singers are not necessarily at the top of their game. Just my observation as a listener. I had a little bit more control when I was singing during a 30 minute commute each way and talking on the phone all day, doing a help desk job. I'll never have a fine singing instrument like Eminem though. Speaking of finding the right material, I like Marcel Deste's new disc cause he's selected some upbeat, child-like songs that really match his tone and multi-tracked production. Fun. Some really nice harmony parts in places too! He has some really good ideas. np: "Irene" by our own Kate Bennett, from my autographed copy of her "Over The Moon" CD.
