This is my last report and probably my last post for awhile. Work is getting pretty crazy, plus I've got new commitments with the school. It's going to be a hard year ahead. It was nice to have a break being surrounded by all the nice loving JMDL people and beautiful music. Saturday was a crazy day. I felt like I hardly got a chance to catch my breath. Had a quick breakfast, then worked with Bob Muller setting up the VG-8 and then going over his songs. Then raced over to Chuck's great Dulcimer Workshop. It was very informative and fun. Thank you so much Chuck!!! Then I did my Joni Guitar 101 Workshop. I had never led a workshop or tried to teach this stuff before, so it was all new for me. I hope people understood everything. Thankfully, Michael Paz helped at the end by suggesting that we all learn to play Dreamland, so we did that and then he led us into Song For Sharon. I would never have tried to teach people that song, but everybody got it and it was really fun! Thank you Michael Paz! Then I raced over to the main building for Julius' and Jenny's Acapella Workshop. Julius had worried that we could only learn one song, but the group managed to get together three songs in just over an hour. It was really fun, and very very beaut! iful with all the different harmonies. I think this practice session was one of the best moments of the fest for me. Thank you Jenny and Julius! Saturday night was amazing, starting with Patti Witten. She was so perfect and her songs were really beautiful. I felt very lucky to be able to hear her perform for free! It was like seeing Jonatha or something. I really loved your songs, Patti, and will be ordering your CD in the near future. Sue McNamara! It was so great to get to meet you at last. I'm so glad you finally made it to a fest. Just wish you could have stayed longer and we would have had time to chat and jam. I loved hearing you perform - you have so much heart - and you really said so many nice things about everyone on the stage. I wish I had your gift of thinking of nice things to say. Sherelle! Wow! It was wonderful to see you live! Your songs are really great and you really got everybody happy and wanting to get up and jive! I loved it! Claudia!! When are you going to make a CD????? I want to put your songs on replay on my CD player!!! Just gorgeous! Henning and Christina - wow, Christina sounds almost like Joni sometimes. Such a clear voice and she makes it all looks so effortless. What a great gift! And Henning's guitar playing was really beautiful to back her her up! Bryan Thomas - you are so unique - your guitar playing is so excellent - your voice - what can I say? I love to watch you. You are also really perfect on the stage. I can't wait to get your latest CD which I will be ordering soon. Nikki! You were just great, Nikki! You shouldn't worry or be shy! Michael, just loved that Flat Tires! And Chris - great bass playing! Bob Muller, I love your voice! It's not too late to consider a singing career! I stayed up too late Saturday ('til 6:45 a.m., to be exact) and drank too many cognacs (three), so I had a headache when I woke up on Sunday. Just barely made breakfast at 10:55. After brea! kfast, spent some time with Claud in the library. Thank you Claud for being interested in the music - sharing that time with you meant a lot to me. In the afternoon I went to the Songwriting Workshop led by Kate Bennett and Jeff Bisch. I had never been to a workshop like that before. I enjoyed hearing everyone's songs and it was interesting to hear the feedback from everyone. Thank you Kate and Jeff! Then I worked with Susan Guzzi for guitar on Sweet Bird, which went pretty well. And then with Pearl Weisberg for guitar on Circle Game and Nathan La Franeer. Pearl had spent the whole day practicing these songs on guitar - so much that her fingers were really hurting and she felt she just couldn't bear to play in the evening, so she asked for my help. I didn't know Circle Game very well, and Nathan La Franeer not at all, so Nikki kindly printed out the tab for Nathan and let me borrow her Circle Game tab. In the middle of practicing with Pearl, my luggage arrived, so ! that interrupted the session. I wish I had taken notes with you, Pearl, because at the performance I really blew it. I'm so sorry! I played Nathan too fast and goofed up the chords, and played Circle Game too slow. But your singing was wonderful (how come you waited so long to perform???) and I hope you'll build up some caluses so that you can play on your own next time! Gisele Hawkins, you are fantastic! Please get your CD out soon! I very much enjoyed your banter with Paz - really funny stuff! Susan Guzzi, thank you for asking me to play for you. I loved your heartfelt Sweet Bird, and man, what a voice!!! I'm really looking forward to the videos, so that I can enjoy watching and hearing everyone again! Catherine McKay, we missed you! Stephanie Morrison, wow! You really know what you're doing on the piano!!! I enjoyed the Tori Amos tune that you played while Yael sang in her beautiful clear voice! And later in the song circle you played that amazing Bach pie! ce as perfectly as my favorite Bach pianist Glenn Gould! Wow!!! Sugar Pants!!! And Granola Pants and I can remember all the pants, but what you did was very entertaining!!! Les Ross, I have mentioned before - meditation in motion - your vibe is really peaceful and safe. I loved you! Jack Neilson, your songs made me cry - they are so beatiful - can't wait for your CD. Jeff Bisch, really love your down to earth, salt of the earth songs! Also, great stage managing. Kate Bennett!!! It was really wonderful to hear you perform live! I have your CD and have enjoyed it very much, and hearing you in person was a special treat! I totally love that Indian wolf song - love that guitar rhythm. Can't wait for the fest CDs as that's one that'll be on replay and one I'd like to learn. Roberto, your piano arrangements were really great. Chris, your bass playing really rounded out some of the songs and was totally great! Ashara, this fest could not have happened without your c! ourage and patience. I don't know how you do it year after year! Thank you Chuck for bringing all your equipment! Thank you Heather for the beautiful name tags! Thank you Jody for helping with the scrap books. Thank you Full Moon for your excellent food and beautiful place. Thank you everyone who didn't get up and perform for listening. Thank you Bette for smiling at me so kindly. Thank you Rose for understanding. Thank you John Balkin for your encouragement. Thank you JMDL people for just being the great people that you are. I remember vividly that she didn't use a guitar pick. | She had these very long nails and used them instead. It was wonderful. | | After Joni finished her set it was time for Neil. Joni wanted to watch, of course. People near me were screaming "Get Joni a seat, get her a seat!". I had been so fortunate to get mine. I wasn't giving it up for anyone, not even Joni. But someone | next to me did. So Joni Mitchell and I sat next to each other and watched Neil perform that night. She actually talked to me! | | She said, "Are you drunk or stoned?" I replied (the incredibly suave person that I have always been) "Uh, a little of both." That seemed to satisfy her and we watched Neil perform together. That's my Joni Mitchell story! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Sep 2002 10:03:50 +0100 From: LXROSS@ctrl.co.uk Subject: Jonifest 2002 - late but still heartfelt My, my, that all went very well, didn't it? Ashara, an inspired and unqualified success. The Full Moon is our spiritual home hereafter. Congratulations to you and all those who helped you realise this event. Jonifest 2002 was excellent. In every possible way. It was community, party and performance central. I haven't been to three (well, four really) days of music where I enjoyed it so much and where everybody was so good. Saturday night was amazing. Just amazing. Personal Swoon favourites were: Claudia Sans Soucie with her song co-written with John Van Tiel Walt Breen's rendition of "I just have to breathe" from the Bacharach/David catalogue Kate Bennett's Wolf Song Marian's song co-written with Hell Personal Oh-My-God favourites were: Bryan Thomas's entire set Giselle's entire set Sherelle's entire set (those guys burnt the house down!!!) Blimey! Moments were: Christina's singing Marian's guitar playing Hidden Sensational moment: Claudia's song from the song writing workshop. I don't believe I've heard a better song and sung so beautifully. No hyperbole either. There are times when hearing something inspiring makes you want to take up your guitar and play and sing. This was a moment when something was so good it really felt like perhaps one shouldn't bother. :-) (I'm smiling as I write this) Major thanks to Mike Paz and Chuck Eisenhardt for bringing all the instruments and always being on hand for music. If no one else knew how to play it, you could always count on those two. The Full Moon resort is a perfect and, (thank God) bug free location. You would not believe the stuff I carried with me to fend off attack. Bottles of it! None used. Praise be. The place was just ideal as far as I was concerned. The proprietors and all the people working there were really nice and friendly. The weather was mostly good. Maybe it was the mood around the place but even the deluge on Saturday added an almost cosy vibe to the place - - okay well maybe I'm pushing it a bit here. I cannot wait to have the CDs of this entire event. Really, it was that good. So collaborative too. The spaces and the timing of the performances afforded plenty of chances to get together with people, work things out and then to bring it to the stage. On a more private note, I'd like to offer enormous thanks to Christina Friis-Nielsen and Chris Marshall for doing Dry Cleaner with me (I cannot believe I got to sing with Christina - wait til you guys, who didn't get to come, hear what she sounds like!) and additional heartfelt gratitude to Roberto Holliston for transforming my own wee tune. Anyone with the least notion to get up and sing their hearts out? Anyone who wants just to be there for the fun and family of it? Jonifest is your home! Be there next year. Also, due to post-Jonifest syndrome, and the fact that there's so many JMDL must-have recordings out there of late, the covers project rests for the month of Sept. It's certainly NOT for lack of material, I played #33 on the porch at the Full Moon, so it's done. I'll give it the official release Oct. 1. I'll give it the official release Oct. > 1. Speaking of Joni covers, I heard one of them from Bob's ever-growing collection yesterday. Travis told me he had a surprise for me yesterday and while we were out & about he made a cell phone call to one of his co-workers, asking her if she had returned a video. I wondered what the heck that was all about. Later he made a point of driving to a small Asian grocery store (I thought we were looking for a video store). We went in and he showed the woman at the counter a piece of paper with a name on it & told her he wanted to rent a video. She told him that all of their videos were Filipino and that they didn't rent any English videos. He told her that was fine. When we got home he popped this video into the VCR. It was a movie called 'Magkapatid' starring Sharon Cuneta. Over the credits what should I hear but Sharon Cuneta singing 'Both Sides Now.' I figured the Covers King already had this one (I think Joseph Palis had talked about Sharon before) but I checked the database anyway and sure enough, it was there. Travis isn't a Joni fan but he heard his coworker humming BSN and asked her if she knew whose song that was. She told him about the movie and he made sure I got a 'Joni moment' yesterday. After reading all the fest reports, the color of my complexion is about that of the stuff good ol' Linda Blair earped up in 'The Exorcist.' To hear Sherelle sing live would be a rare privilege indeed to me. I already know the excellence of Marian Russell's guitar playing (and to hear & see the legendary Sue McNamara as well! Wow! What a rush that must have been!), the amazing versatility of that butch guy Michael Paz on both guitar and keyboards, Chuck E's remarkable musicality and capability with equipment, Roberto's virtuoso tickling of the ivories, the top drawer talent of Bryan Thomas, not to mention Ashara's soul-stirring vocalizations (happy belated birthday, my beloved twin sister), Maggie's warmth that radiates like the sun or a blazing fire on a winter's night, Mr. Mueller's easy-going affability (can't comment on your singing, Bob, since you didn't do a set the year I attended Jonifest), Patrick's intelligence, Uncle John's perfect British accent and open-handed generosity and oh so many other superlative positives in so many other people that I have had the privilege to meet and witness displaying their extraordinary talents. On another note, I found Springstein's latest at Best Buy today for the amazingly low price of $10.99. I have never bought a Springstein recording in my life and have never been a fan. But I have read a few things about this particular release and felt that I needed to hear it. Maybe some of Rose's enthusiasm rubbed off on me as well. And I couldn't possibly end this post with a big, hearty CONGRATULATIONS to Mags & Brei! I have met Brian and know what a sweet man he is. Although I haven't met Mags (yet), I feel that I know her and it seems that the two of you must have been made for each other. May you be blessed and know all happiness in your life together. You deserve it! I realize another symptom of post-jonifest syndrome is loss of interest in things that don't really matter to me - I have no desire to watch T.V - no loss there - but I now dread the thought of going to my mildly interesting once-tolerable day job - the job I'm at until I figure out what I *really* want to do with my life. Anyone else? Okay now that I've got that off my chest, these are just a few of my favorite Jonifest things... Marian's cover of Ray's Dad's Cadillac. I'm in awe of her guitar playing and voice - so sweet and poignant. I thought Dream Flat Tires was my least favorite Joni song until I heard Paz play it. Now I have to find another one! Yael's bright and shiny voice - and a personality to match. Victor's exquisite cover of Judgement of the Moon and Stars Kate and Jeff who quietly contributed so much throughout the weekend -thank you for leading an incredible (three hanky) songwriting workshop. Yael, Victor, Les, Donna, Marian, and Claud thank you for sharing such beautiful, heartfelt music at the workshop - you all inspire me in different ways. Mary, thank you for your thoughtful contributions too. Person who suprised me the most...Barbara during the song circles. Damn! Where did that voice come from? My roommates the party animals. No matter how I tried, I always went to bed HOURS and HOURS before Nikki and Rose did. Put me to shame. Loved Chuck's "karaoke" set. And his dry and deadpan movements during the instrumental sections of his songs. Bob Muller's and Jack's sets killed me, but I think I've already gushed about them. I loved every moment Alison opened her mouth - singing I mean, not cursing ; ). Her voice is so souful and just divine. Henning playing Here Comes the Sun Christina's Amazing Grace Pearl, I enjoyed singing and talking with you and hearing about your early singing days. So glad you're back at it. Singing JT with Ashara and Chuck on the front porch. Finding out Patrick and Bob Muller are Stephen Schwartz fans. A zillion other moments big and small - Thank you Ashara and everyone else who contributed to creating this weekend that will stay with me a lifetime. Jenny Yahoo!
