This is the fifth night of seven straight. More info: http://www.jmdl.com/articles/docs/690826lat.cfm 1970: Joni plays on the fourth day of the "Isle Of Wight Festival" at the East Afton Farm, Godshill, Isle of Wight. Ian Scott: I was there and remember her performance was marred by a noisy helicopter flying overhead, which Joni could neither see nor hear. This resulted in 100,000+ people booing, jeering and shouting "go away" at the helicopter. Sadly, Joni thought the boos were aimed at her and started to cry. The helicopter incident is particularly significant when you consider that the festival was the biggest live entertainment event in the history of the world: roadies who worked at both were unanimous that it was bigger than Woodstock. Now, the impression that I get from all publications is that there was some hostility between the crowd and Joni that day. This is ABSOLUTELY not true. I was sitting inside the arena and in a good position to feel the general mood of the crowd, and I can assure you that the only hostility was directed toward the helicopter pilot flying overhead and NOT at Joni. 95% of the crowd did not even notice the Yogi Bear incident(he had no mike and was not cent! re stage) and more than 99% had no sympathy for him. By the time Joni struck into "Big Yellow Taxi" the helicopter had gone and everybody was listening to Joni. Phil Aldridge: I was an innocent 18 year old at the Isle of Wight in 1970. I don't remember helicopters. What I do remember was that there were lots of people on the hill (known as "Desolation Row") overlooking the festival site. They wanted the festival to become "Free" and I think they'd tried to break down the fences a bit earlier. The organisers, and those who'd paid for their tickets, didn't like the fact that these guys weren't prepared to pay their three quid (about $5) but were happy to share the music. There had been growing tension over the previous hours. I think Joni's comments came as she started her set and were aimed at what had been happening and not at the way people were treating her personally. I do remember being moved by what Joni had to say. It still makes the hairs on my neck stand up when I listen to the recording. Incidentally, a few hours earlier I'd been given a press pass by a hack who was leaving early. This got me between the two security fences. The real advantage to me was not the superstars that I could meet, but the chance to buy food without queuing for an hour. I got myself some fish and chips then turned round to see... Joni. I gave her a chip - don't remember if I offered or she asked. I still tell the "Joni ate my chips" story to anyone who'll listen - and you're the latest :o) More info: http://www.jmdl.com/articles/docs/700830nyt.cfm http://www.jmdl.com/articles/docs/700903wet.cfm 1986: "A Showtime series "Coast to Coast" hosted by Herbie Hancock premiered [today]. Joni was a guest on that first show for a jam session with Herbie, Bobby McFerrin, Wayne Shorter, David Sanborn, and Larry. The two songs they jammed on were Joni's compositions "Furry Sing the Blues," and a pepped-up latin-flavored version of "Hejira." Thanks, dc. They've never worked together per se, but they've shared some musicians like Michael McDonald, Larry Carlton, Tom Scott, others. Joni appreciates their unique chord stylings and selected "Gaucho" as one her "My Top 12" in a 1983 radio interview. Also, Steely Dan is supposedly contributing a cover of Carey to the Reprise tribute CD, not that I ever expect to see it! It truly felt like we were in a 'bubble' (who said that?) of warmth and generosity and tolerance and giving and friendship, and of course, song! I don't remember any Biblical mention of Adam and Eve and the kids jamming in Eden, and I don't know on exactly which day of Creation the guitar was created, but the extent to which these above qualities abounded at the Fest are making it VERY hard for me to get back to life as usual. I don't even want to pick up the newspaper ....readin the news, and it sure looks bad. (Except I think some lost Orca whale made it home to the pod recently...) All this lifted my heart. Thank you Ashara, and everyone there, or not there but rooting or pining (we missed you). Full Moon will be talking about THATThat, and almost being made a honorary lesbian. for some time to come. (It was a superb choice of venue) They should probably build another couple of cabins for next year (and with the bar tabs from the weekend, they probably could!) It's a ggod thing the shamans cancelled because with all that songpower we woulda KICKED THEIR BUTTS, here, there, and astrally! So I made it back to the pod, a least for a few days. Some of us got together at Ric's last night (Ashara, Maggie, Roberto, Heather, (queen of nametags and pasta), and my Barbara, and with all of Ric's incredible Native American art around us I was thinking about a Hopi creation story where, you know, the world is getting created by the GS (great spirit) and the first stage was creating twins, who were singers. They sang two tones and between them, the harmony created all matter, all the earth. So in this creation story, sound preceded substance. (I think there may even be pretty good recent physics that could be comfortable with that...) The sounds that went down last weekend and the people channeling them (Ethel included) created real substantial MAGIC. Maybe we turned back the doomsday clock a whole couple of minutes... Ashara asked us about personal high points, and so going on to mention mention only a few individual performances, let me just say that my high points were all about the HARMONY, literally and figuratively. When Henning and Christina were ending with an amazing 'Conversation' they had 75 crazies going 'doot-doo-doot' so loud it drowned out the PA. Ashara did Shower the People and Jenny and I had worked out a really nice three part harmony, but in the moment the whole room lit up with voices. And on and on... Well, you'll see. Roberto and I were saying that most of the performances were pro quality, or, say, better than almost all of 'Joni's Jazz' - you'll have you own faves but it was just uniformly-amazingly-fantastic. If I were an A&R guy from Sony with carte blanche I would have been handing out contracts left and right. My regret was that there just wasn't enough time to connect with everyone, in a deep enough way. Next Year? The good news is that Ashara is totally nuts and she's already working on that! Eveybody be well, and see you later. Where do I begin to tell the sweet love story ... sorry. But it is a love story ... thank you Joni! And at one time we just thought her music was her gift. I wish just once she could really know what she has spawned. Why doesn't she come play with us some time? First, Ashara. You are something else Mama Lion, Granola pants! I only hope finding Full Moon, can make your job, get easier and easier. I think we really do know how lucky we are to have you and what a treasure you are. Much joy and love to you. To the Lez cottage girls and all the sistas, we are family, we have come so far together. And I can't wait to go forward with all of you. To the Full Moon, what a marriage! This is like nirvana. We belong together! The music was unbelievable! Do you all think I am using the exclaimation point too much? So what?! I loved hearing the less experienced performers and seeing them (me) get there message out as much as you polished talented professionals. HIghlights? Hmmm ... Bryan Thomas, you rocked my world! Marian, you ARE our Joni on guitar. Sherelle, well you know what I thought before it's way beyond that now. Victor can not be stopped. I could be in bed and off in a distance somewhere, I could always hear you. Kay, Jenny, Gisele and Barbara - you go girls! Bob Mueller, Paz Man, the Les's kick my ass and even make me swoon! Kate Bennett and Jeff Bisch bringing it down home! Thanks especially for the help I got from Kate and Jeff and Marian. I went looking for help and I was fortunate to get three ringers for my set. Thanks for picking up the rookie! I'll never forget. Also, my most embarassing moment. When I gave Kate the Cd of Patsy, that I brought all the way from Chicago ... without the CD actually inside. I am still blaming that on my cat, she is a closet Patsy Cline fan. Highlight: The Friday night Hee Haw at the Lez cottage! At one point we had more than 20 in and around our back deck singing - and in the rain I might add. That's where Fire and Rain came out for Sugarpants! Gisele playing non stop, Victor playing non-stop. And that's when one too many Wild Turkeys opened up this shy Jonifester from last year and I broke out into Ethel Merman. I know there are plenty of you who would like to shoot me for that, but I never meant for things to get so out of hand. Smurph get help! You CAN kick the Merman habit! We'll do an interventon if need be. Getting to know or observe with joy, Jody, Rose, Patrick, Roberto,Chuck, Walt, Brian, Ed and Claudia. As always Uncle John, Jimmy, Nikki and Paz. Just walking around the compound , the stopping here and there for hugs! The stopping for photo opps. Sitting alone at night on the Lez porch hearing laughter and music from a distance. Especially, Saturday night as I sat and heard Smurph doing "IT" all the way form the performance space to the front porch, for the first of many many many many many times! Oh and Kay, Smurph and I doing the video diary in our creepiest Ethel! Seeing Maggie get to play at the fest instead of being on task in the kitchen! To the Sugarpants & Lez cottage posse, Donna, Hell, Kerry, Lori, Sharon, Catherine, Mary P, Ashara, Yael, Cindy and MAGS! Quiet Mags, who has become such a dear friend, it was sooo great really talking, even though you were a bit preoccupied. It was so great to see you bust it out at the Hee Haw! Late night chats with Lori and Cindy sharing bits of our hearts & souls together. All you women are pretty freakin incredible! I am walking on air and the last time I felt like this I was falling in love! To all mentioned and the other half I did not .... Everybody I love you. Thank you GOODNIGHT! Peace, Susan P.S. Three days of peace, love and music and what's so funny bout peace love and understanding?! Yahoo!
