Full Moon is the perfect place for Jonifests - friendly and flexible staff, excellent food, beautiful surroundings, VERY CLEAN rooms!!! I drove up to Full Moon on Friday from CT and arrived about noon. I had spent Thursday in CT doing some family history research - found my ggggrandparents from Scotland in a little Scottish cemetery near where the other ancestors used to live. This was very exciting because I didn't know for sure if these ggggrandparents had made the trip with everyone else. Now I know what happened to them! My suitcase (with my Roland memory card, guitar strings, capo, and photocopies of all the things for my workshop, not to mention my clothes for the whole weekend) got lost in Paris and still hadn't arrived at the hotel by Friday morning, but when I got to Full Moon, Roger, one of the owners, told me the airline had called and my bag would be there soon. To make a long story short, it still had not arrived by Sunday morning! I had already spent about an hour on hold listening to muzak with a French twist that just made me want to scream and was still getting the run around. I was so frustrated that I was in tears. I'm still thanking God for Mona Fitzgerald who just took over the whole problem and really read those airline people the riot act until my bag finally arrived on Sunday afternoon. Without her intervention, I wouldn't have gotten my luggage until after I returned to Austria. By taking over this big problem, Mona, I was able to stop crying, relax, and enjoy bein! g at the fest. It was such a big weight off my shoulders. Thank you so much, Mona!!! I'm bringing you a bottle of really good champagne someday! Thanks also to Pearl and Kate who let me borrow some things to wear for my performance on Saturday night. It felt so good to put on some clean clothes! Thanks also to Roger's wife who washed the two outfits I brought with me. Everyone was so nice!!! I felt like I had come home to my true family and on top of that there was so much REALLY AMAZING music!!!!! I have to go now, but I will write more later. Just wanted to let y'all know I'm back in Austria, WITH my luggage, and I'm missing everybody and wishing it just could have gone on and on and on. I feel happy - feel connected to all that good energy of the weekend. More later. If you can't put them in chonological order, it would be helpful if you could at least say which day each photo is from. Otherwise the only thing I can do to figure which day a photo is from is to try to remember who was wearing what on whatever day, and even though you are a very attractive group with lots of nice outfits, I don't think that will be possible. The fest page was slow in going up last year, mainly because I was -- like everyone else -- distracted (to say the least) by the attacks on 9/11. But if you all get the photos in ASAP this year, I promise to get the captions done faster. But I simply have to start the day by writing about the Jonifest 2002 BEFORE reality returns and two weeks mysteriously rush by. WOW. WHAT AN AWESOME FEST!!!! UNF#?*ING BELIEVABLE. It just keeps getting better. Ashara, you are MAGICAL. You manage to pull us together over and over again, and you finding FULL MOON for us was/is divine. The performance space is so cozy and intimate, simply perfect. The staff...warm and welcoming. The food...delicious and creative. The entire experience felt like home. Thank you for all you have done, thank you, thank you!!!!!! One of the best parts about FULL MOON to me is that you had a chance to relax and enjoy yourself as well!!!! Yippie Anne, Wally K., you were on my mind throughout the fest, I saw you each standing here and there, heard your laughter, felt your tears, embraced you both, shared my heart in spirit. I missed you. I also missed Leslie and Steve. I kept hearing Leslie's voice where it wasn't and I missed singing the Gallery. I hope all is well and you'll be back again. Highlights? ...Mmmmm, I might need a few months to sort through them ALL, but here are a few that pop into my mind. Definitely OUR honeymooners ;-)))) Congratulations again, MagsnBri and thanks for sharing your happiness with your JMDL family. You both radiate such love and happiness... it is quite infectious ;-) All the music..... Wow, what a gathering of incredible talent. Everyone was there to share something from their heart, which made every performance to me a treasure. Marian, the Rodeo song is on constant replay in my head, and the songs you and Hell collaborated on are heart-wrenchingly beautiful in words and melody, WOW, thank you for sharing them with me again on Sunday; Patti, your CD is awesome, but after hearing you on Saturday, that was no surprise; Victor, your set was really beautiful- I was mesmerized by your piano songs, Asheville is doing you some good; Bryan T. you are so invisible until you get up on stage. Then you launch like a missile - wow, your Joni interpretations take me to a whole other planet. Can't wait to hear your CD. Christina and Henning, you two served such a delicious smorgasbord of Joni songs - what an authentic treat. You have remarkable talents; Gisele, - you! I have no words. I would just want to shut up and listen. What a heart, what a voice, what a player. Come back next year, ... or else I'll have to whoop your ass. The same goes for you, Jack. What a treat it is to hear you. I can't wait for your CD. Your voice and your playing...both tremendous. Sherelle - soulful to the core... your heartfelt set calmed my nerves like magic. I was just so "into the moment" when you sang. Edith was absolutely gorgeous. Thanks for moving to MD, I hope we'll see more of each other. Les R. - I've said it all before - you know I adore what you do and it is so rewarding to see you grow musically and in confidence. You've got it. Bob - you teaming up with Roberto for a Waits song delivered! - it was brilliant and flawless. Kate - I loved the wolfsong! I won your CD in the raffle, so glad to see it is on there. I could go on, and on...please forgive me for not mentioning everyone in this message... I would only sound enthusiastically repetitive. More..... Jeff, Les I., and John thank you for your collaboration on the David Olney song. It was very special to me to perform this song. You've added so much. Kate and Jeff, the songwriting workshop was very inspiring. I got a lot out of it and hope everyone walked away feeling the same. Next year, I'll be a bit more prepared. More.... The song circles, wow ... magical... perfect. The star filled sky, the full moon shining on FULL MOON; Sharon's accordion porch serenade; the holding of hands during egg dancing...the lemon bread reward right after; the late night Sugar Pants rehearsal session; the pool hall jam - standing in the middle, the blending of voices, surround sound of happiness, heavenly, exquisite, drunk with joy (and more) madness...a moment of bliss for all my still available senses ;-) Bette and John Morris, for always looking so happy and content. I enjoyed your company. Julius, Yael, Barbara, Maggie... your smiles are priceless -- Lori... you better work on yours ;-)))) Walt, I enjoyed the dinner times we shared. I am sorry that I missed your set. Now I have to waaaaaaait for the CDs... I promise, next year I'll be there on time, but only if you promise not to get any taller ;-))) Donna, Marian, Steven, Jenny, and all other regularly wet-eyed JMDLers... thank you for easing the drought situation. Alison, I was serious about the potty mouth workshop - or better yet, could I get some intensive one-on-one tutoring ;-) ... also, please let's do some bluegrass next year! I love your voice! A hidden agenda: get to hear Les play some more of that juicy kick-ass mandarin :-)))) Chris, Jimmy, Ed your hugs are among the best. Come to think of it, hugging Hell ain't too bad either ;-) Kerry, glad to discover we have something in common.. aside from Pema Chvdron ;-) Hell, thanks for the CD and your lyrics. Michael, I missed your shrimp but I didn't miss you smelling like a shrimp - -- so good to see you again. Jody, thanks for my pepper and showing up numb or not....quit those cigs though Thanks, all of you, thanks... so many more to mention....I am running out of time... there is more... so it'll just have to wait,... one last wish... just be there again next year. Let me group hug all of you one more time...., for now (((((((((((((((x))))))))))))))) Much Love, Claud9 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Aug 2002 17:05:19 EDT From: RoseMJoy@aol.com Subject: Fest fotos Some people told me they had difficulty getting in the album. After attending 3 prior fests, I was thinking "this fest can't possibly be as good as last years" WRONG!!!! The Full Moon Resort was a great find Ashara, and I can't wait until 2003. I want to thank everyone who made this such a magical weekend. After being in the hospital for a week, it was the perfect way to heal the ailments of surgery. There I said it! It went so fast and even thought I hardly slept (and never while the sun was down) I feel like I missed so much. I am sure lots of folks will tell you how wonderful the Full Moon was, the food, the people, in gifted detail (better than I) so I would just like to touch on my personal highlights in streaming form (no particular order). First of all my heartfelt thanks to Ashara for the fifth time. This event fills me up and keeps me going for almost a year. I think you ought to consider doing it twice a year. Heeee heee heee! Your efforts are forever appreciated. Being able to get Jack Nielson up there with me was so amazing and he had such a good time playing with other folks and listening to the music and connecting with old "buddies" from the New Orleans fest. Hooking up and hanging out with my old traveling traveling traveling Buds Alison and Julius and then getting to stay with Kay in Brooklyn (thanks so much Kay and I love Holy Man tooooo, hope you didn't mind me singing along) and hanging with Patrick and some my other pals in NYC. Great sushi place too Alison! One of the best parts of this year was getting to hear so many people who have come up but not done anything on stage. Please more of you people get the feck up and play more. Captive audience duh!!!!! Bob Murphy you should just do a whole fecking hour of stand up and music. I dreamed you singing to me last night. You as Ethel Merman doing Joni Mitchell sends me over the top, but then when you had her doing White Rabbit and The Needle and The Damage Done, it sent me over the edge. Hanging out with you down down down at the pool garage was so much fun and the music jams there were as powerful as ever thanks to the late night krewe. BTW Smurph I would love to produce your alter egos tribute to music. With feature performances by Kay Ashley and Susan Guzzi AND Patrick Leader. OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! The musical performances every night were just SO brilliant. I was driven to tears by so many people this year. That damn Jack Neilson made me cry with his Wedding Song for Mags and Brei (actually called "Shine On Our Love") and I have had that song beat into my head for the last year during the production of his record. It just brought it all home when I saw Mags and Brei and so many other couples on the list. Bryan Thomas doing A Case of You was another one that just opened the flood gates. Bry you kill me man and your playing gets better and better. Claudia's collaboration with John and also Marian and Hell's collaboration were just stunning between lyricists and musician and then performer. WoW! Perhaps the best musical moment for me was Nikki playing and singing her ass off (at the same time) on stage. You go girlfriend!! A VERY close second place goes to watching Jack sing with Christina and Henning. Also made pretty weepy. Meeting so many new people and putting faces with the names. The only bad part for me is the time factor. I end up spending all my time with friends from past fests or the musicians or the drunks (not necessarily in that order). A note to all JoniFest newbies-Hang out late will sleep when we're dead! The most fun with my clothes on category was having the honour of playing for the folks who asked me to play for them. Thank you so much Sherelle, Yael, Alison, Donna, and Nikki (with special thanks to Jenny Goodspeed for asking me to work with the acapella group). It's always such a gas playing with the Divine Chuck E on keys and OHMYGAWD Roberto and Chris and Les and Jeff thanks so much for playing with me on my set. It is such a gas for me to play with such gifted musicians (I think next year we should also play with a drummer). Other amazing musical highlights this year were: Les Ross (just wonderful and if I were gay.. Well nevermind), Jack Neilson DUH!, Marian Russell, Claudia (as always what a songwriter beautiful spirit that just spills out of her and surrounds you), Sue Mc (the legend wow we are so blessed to have you and thanks for all your efforts and hard work), Jenny Goodspeed (I was transported by your set. Your playing and everything are growing and blooming out loud), Susan Guzzi (what a freaking joy to hear and feel your power), Giselle YOU BITCH!!! just you wait till I get up on the stage the next time I am gonna roast your ass, but good. Thanks so much for the reverse heckling feel free to use me any time for the BUTT of your jokes. If your jokes were half as good as your playing and singing...and your version of Magdalene Laundries was just off the hook. And after all that teasing (which really did make me laugh so hard) you made me have a big boo hoo as well.) Thanks for the emotional roller coaster ride! Pearl it was a joy to see you get up and I enjoyed your set so much. As I did everyone's. There were some amazing moments from everyone all three nights. I smoked half cigarettes (mostly inside that back room) so I wouldn't miss anything (and also to not get wet the first two nights which is WHY you have a cold Alison!!!!! I hardly talked to anyone to not miss any of the music. BTW Patti W (Thanks for the pick of which I found a few more of the floor) your version of Hejira was mind-blowing and I may just never play that song again thanks to you. Christina and Henning I see nothing but good stuff for you guys. Best of luck with the record! What a voice and NOT so hard on the eyes either. Thanks so much to Kate and Jeff for organizing the song circles every night (especially after stage managing all nights). The was some of the most amazing stuff I hope they at least come out on the video tape (thanks Ashara again) so we can re-live some of that stuff. I was gonna try and see what I got on tape (which was not as complete as last year, but I am pretty sure Les Irvin was on the ball). There was so much other stuff that filled me with joy but I would gush forever. Thank you all so much for all of your support, friendship, love, music, and caring. I reserve the right to write a follow up to this stream when I decompress a bit more and the streaming starts happening again, which will include my trip to Woodstock, under age girls in bars, self medication, and some other of the after hours memorabilia. Till then I bid you all a fond good night and pleasant dreams. Huge BIG BLACK BEAR HUGS TO ALL!!!! Love Michael Paz P.S. Will someone please make sure to call Full Moon and send someone down to the garage/pool table area and tell Victor the fest is over and he can stop playing. Love ya man, but you won this year.
