GARRET ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 22:00:02 -0500 From: "jd0e" Subject: New Guy, go easy on me... Hello all, I am new to the Joni list, and for that matter, new to Joni as well. I really like the songs I've been listening to so far. I had always heard of Joni Mitchell, but my first encounter with her and her music was on The Last Waltz DVD. Coyote is an execellent song and the high quality DVD really makes it all the better. I am an avid Neil Young fan and was wondering if there are any stories about the two of them. It seems they have a lot in common musically, with the content of songs and style. Are there any other interesting things about them? (ie. there seemed to be some chemistry between Joni and Neil on the Last Waltz DVD during some of the group scenes.) Just curious. Also, I am wanting to get my hands on some live Joni bootlegs. Obviously, I have no Joni to trade, but I do have tons of Neil Young and some other people. I really prefer to trade online via my (or your) FTP server. If anybody is interested in trading please let me know offlist. Any information about Neil and Joni (if there is any) would be great. Thanks everybody, Matt -- quite happy to have discovered Joni *and* this mailing-list complete with an amazing website/database/thing. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 23:05:52 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: New Guy, go easy on me... - --- jd0e wrote: > Hello all, I am new to the Joni list, and for that > matter, new to Joni as > well. First of all, welcome to the list. If you're new to Joni, it's going to be like Christmas every day for the next while as you get more and more *stuff*. Second, things may be a bit quiet around here for the next 3-5 days, as many of the list members are off to the Northeast Joni-fest (damn them all anyway - was gonna go, but shit happened, blah blah blah.) There are plenty of Joni recordings to be had and I'm sure you'll hear all about it within the next few days, after the effects of booze, revelry and Joni overload begin to wear off. (Wot? Me? Jealous? Naaaah - there's always next year, right?) ===== Catherine Toronto ______________________________________________________________________ Post your ad for free now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Aug 2002 00:03:09 EDT From: RoseMJoy@aol.com Subject: Re: New Guy, go easy on me... Welcome to the list Matt. I love Neil too. Checked out the Rusties never sleep site too. Very kewl. We've got quite a few Neil freaks here. One thing I know about Neil and Joni is that they both had polio as children, so there has always been this affinity between them. Another thing I know is that Jon wrote the song "Circle Game" for her old buddy Neil. I heard the story Joni told on a bootleg. Seems that Neil was kicked out of a club he used to play at just because he turned 20. Neil was real upset about it because he missed playing with all his buddies. I believe Sugar Mountain pertains to that time. I'll hook u up with the bootleg guy as soon as he returns from Jonifest. I'm headed there myself tomorrow. No big Neil Young fan but your post reminded me of an old friend from college. Her name was Monette, she used to sing, as she played the guitar, the prettiest Neil Young tune to me and for me. If by that you mean that Neil was coked out of his mind and was hanging all over Joni, who did her best to good-naturedly ignore him, I agree !! ; ) btw Neil had so much coke all over his face that they had to retouch each frame of the film by hand at enormous expense. Don't get me wrong, I love Neil, too. Their lives have seemed to run in parrallel- both from the same area of Canada, relentless songwriters, both came to LA and became successful around the same time- even ended up with the same friends (ie CSN etc). I'm sure you have heard Neil's song "Sweet Joni (from Saskatoon)" since you have unreleased stuff of his. Welcome to the list, Matt-good topic to start out with- Since you are new to Ms Mitchell, you have alot of wonderful discoveries ahead!
