Erica - i have also been fascinated by this song of late - the chorus has been getting me - i don't know how to interpret the changes in the chorus as it relates to the preceding verse - note changes: "Lady, don't love me now I am dead I am a saint, turn down your bed I have no heart," that's what you said You said, "I can be cruel But let me be gentle with you" - --- "Lady, please love me now, I am dead I am a saint, turn down your bed I have no heart," that's what you said You said, "I can be cruel But let me be gentle with you" - --- "Lady, please love me now I was dead I am no saint, turn down your bed Lady, have you no heart," that's what you said Well, I can be cruel But let me be gentle with you my latest interpretation is that the conneseuir(sp?) of beauty says anything he can to get the lady to turn down her bed - i'm dead, i'm not dead, don't love me, please love me now, etc. etc. - very sophisticated way for joni to describe a simple pick up situation. its a haunting, beautiful song with an old english feel to it. there are live performances on cd and video - just ask bob:) peace, david ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Aug 2002 10:24:12 -0700 From: "Bree Mcdonough" Subject: Re: The Gallery/Copies of Joni-JT cd >my latest interpretation is that the conneseuir(sp?) of beauty says >anything >he can to get the lady to turn down her bed - i'm dead, i'm not dead, don't >love me, please love me now, etc. etc. - very sophisticated way for joni to >describe a simple pick up situation. >its a haunting, beautiful song with an old english feel to it. >there are live performances on cd and video - just ask bob:) I searched a bit in the JMDL library for any words from Joni on TG, but to no avail. This song could be about one individual or many a men that Joni has crossed paths with or has not crossed paths with. Josephine? And Erica, it is not he that can live without her. It is Josephine who cannot be without him.....big difference. (Whenever I hear the name Josephine I think of Napoleon ) But poor Josephine is one of many woman who have been charmed...bedded by him. (Your mail comes here from everywhere.....the writing looks like ladies) The last two lines: But now their faces follow me......And all their eyes look shady Where once she was enamored..smitten....she is now, oh...a bit disgusted.....knows him for what he truly is. In previous discussions, Leonard Cohen's name has been tossed out as a potential. In thinking about it, doesn't it also make some sense that there's a little of Brad MacMath in there, in terms of a 'love 'em & leave 'em' artist? They met in art school, after all. (Joni & Brad, not Joni & Leonard...) David, I loved the connection you made with the changing line in the chorus, probably key to understanding the song, or at least *start* to. He is the most likely candidate for the line "They've monitored your brain, YOU say, and changed you with religion." If you have listened to or read Cohen's songs and poems, lust and holiness are equally represented. I think he is also the "holy man on the FM radio" (singing, not DJ-ing.) And by God, I think he is the Priest, too. My two cents, Ruth ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Aug 2002 21:45:29 -0500 From: "mia ortlieb" Subject: re: the gallery Hi Erica, Its so funny that you brought this up because last Sunday night I was watching a video of Joni playing THE GALLERY. And I thought to myself, gee, I really love that song, why haven't I learned how to play that one on my guitar? It seemed easy enough. Now I play it all the time, and I can't get it out of my head! Only problem is, I can't sing it well. The vocal range in that song is out of my league. Oh well, its fun to pretend! On the video I have (thanks to Bob), Joni asks the audience if there are any scientologists out there. Apparently, the song is about one and he is also an artist. Joni mentions something like - an artist is a connoisseur of beauty and she likes to think of this character as spending all his time connoisseuring all those beauties. I love the last line: "but now their faces follow me, and all their eyes look shady". I get an incredible visual here! Only Joni can do that to me!
