O.K. I've just listened to it three times again to try to 'splain myself. I only meant it as the highest of compliments to both Paul and Graham. The song actually sounds remarkably like it came straight from Lennon-McCartney somewhere around the late 60s. That alone could be as good as it gets. But now it's being sung by someone who I think is probably the nicest, sweetest man ever in rock. *That's* what makes it even "better." ;-) Kakki > It was great to read your positive review of the album "Songs for > Survivors". I will admit to a private fantasy of Joni inhabiting Galadriel's position, when I read about the Queen of the Elves for the first time and in every reincarnation of it on the stage or screen I always see Joni's straight blonde hair, high cheek bones, and lovely eyes. The Times of London ran an article (excerpt, w/Joni content, below) on Total Guitar mag's Top guitarists. 440 were nominated by readers, of which only Tracy Chapman made the list; but failed to make the Top 100. Full article at www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,343-376208,00.html *** August 06, 2002 Women excluded from Top 100 guitarists by adam sherwin, media reporter Women are excluded from the pantheon of rock guitar heroes, a new poll has discovered. Jimi Hendrix was voted the number one guitar "god" but not a single female artist made the Total Guitar Top 100. Thousands of magazine readers and some well-known guitarists voted in the poll, which produced a total of 440 nominations. They could have chosen some of rock's most influential women, ranging from Joni Mitchell to Chrissie Hynde. A poll for Q magazine last year voted the West Country singer/guitarist PJ Harvey the most influential female rock and pop artist of all time. But the only woman nominated in the entire 440 by Total Guitar readers was Tracy Chapman, the American contemporary folk singer. Scott Rowley, the Total Guitar editor, admitted his overwhelmingly male readers valued technical prowess above other forms of musical achievement. He said: "I don't know if it's a bad thing. Women just aren't as geeky or competitive about it as guys. Instead of showing off, they're trying to write a good song. Which is probably smarter." Mr Rowley added: "There are some great female guitarists - Bonnie Raitt and Joni Mitchell spring to mind, or session players like Jennifer Batten or Carol Kaye who played on a thousand hits from the 60s and 70s, from La Bamba to Surfin' USA." *** Of course, I realize that such things are subjective--and tend to be redundant, reflecting the state of mind of the person casting the vote. The complete absence of any female guitarists from the 100 is. . .well, words fail me. Also, no sign of Stephen Stills--Neil Young came in at 82nd. And Richard Thompson polled at 93!
