In the program it read: "Joni Anderson - Joni is a relatively new performer on the local folk music scene. She began her singing career in 1964 with an appearance at The Depression in Calgary and The Yardbird Suite in Edmonton. After gaining acceptance in Western Canada, Joni decided to move east and seek her fortune in Toronto. Since her arrival last fall, she has enjoyed performances at several coffee houses--The Bohemian Embassy, The New Gate of Cleve, and the Underground, to name a few. Joni is also noted for playing the tipple--an eight-string instrument slightly larger than the ukelele." It is interesting that this young girl seems to be able to imitate varying styles, sad that her main orientation to music is more related to fashion, & frustrating that that Clive & all are hell bent on constructing a star like this...(since Britney made lots of money for lots of folks i guess it makes sense) rather than giving a shot to someone who can write play & sing (maybe that wouldn't be malleable enough?)... my sense is young kids are hungry for someone who can actually play & write...but what do i know? It got me thinking about where Joni was at the same age that this new hopeful label product is now (23 yrs old)... It would have been 1966 or so...Joni played the Newport Folk Fest the summer of 66... (she was 22 yrs old) & blew people away http://www.jonimitchell.com/Newport67.html When she was 23..."She says 1967 was one of her most productive years. Her output of music has increased from 25 songs to more than 60. When reading the article I was also thinking of Joni and how she resisted being molded in any way, and wasn't even looking for fame, but was just doing what was meaningful to her. I'm thankful, too, that I was able to grow up with Joni. The execs in the article are already "planning" on Britney not being around much longer. Wow, use 'em and toss 'em. Such a cruel business. No wonder the 30-year career folks are getting attention these days, even from younger listeners. There's got to be some substance there to survive that business. There's also a review on the Times website of the Newport Folk Festival that Dylan played at recently, first time since he was booed for going electric there 40 years ago. It includes descriptions of the music scenes, now and then, and how different they are. There was a lot of sharing going on back then. Kind of reminds me of the jonifest music making.
