Billy King writes: "I remember she was absolutely stunning that night - the best concert I've seen in my entire life (among many). Me and my girlfriend at the time were among the first people through the door, and we ran for the best seats we could get...which were 3rd row on the floor, slightly off-center. Joni was a bit somber at times (her pal Cass Elliot had been found dead in London only a few days before), and I remember she broke maybe three or four guitar strings in a row tuning up for "Help Me!" Joni was brilliant and the audience was adoring. I remember I caught a few of Joni's roses--tossed by the stagehands afterwards (in Louisville - home of the 'run for the roses'), which I kept for many years. It was a beautiful night I'll never forget." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jul 2002 02:16:53 -0700 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: Re: assorted musings on things joni...now Nash i just visited with my friend doug ingoldsby who said his song made the cut for this album...one of the first songs he wrote in a workshop we took together a few years ago... for those who get the album his song is called "i'll be there for you" sounds like graham stole crosby's cpr band! >>By the way, Graham Nash's solo CD _Songs for Survivors_ is being released today on Artemis records. I so look forward to my package of Joni covers every month. Who ever would have thought that this all started when you were just a kid, Bob? I'll never forget your story of when you saw Doris Day and she held your tiny face in her hands and sang "Both Sides Now" to you. You looked right at her and said "Miss Day, may I make a recording of that? I'm going to start a collection of Joni covers, and I wanna put you, Kathie Lee Gifford, Robert Goulet, Claudine Longet, Anne Murray, Jim Nabors, and Nazareth all on the same CD." Miss Day looked down at the tiny Muller boy and said "Que Sera Sera, now scram little hick boy, I have to put some Vaseline on the camera lens so my face will have that sparkly glow to it" ..............and the rest is history! Thanks again for everything you've done Bob! Jimmy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jul 2002 07:39:50 EDT From: Dflahm@aol.com Subject: Re: scientists prove it - joni was right!!! HB's cover of BSN is one of the best, pure pop and in their style. They even throw in one of those Oboe riffs (or is it a bassoon?) like they do in "Feelin' Groovy". Luckily for us this track was re-released last year on a retrospective CD, so the sound quality is remastered and superb! Also I would be remiss if I didn't say how much I appreciate your promotion & support for this project of this project from the very beginning, Kakki...YOU are a treasure too! :~) Bob NP: Bruce, "Racing In The Street" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jul 2002 06:15:00 -0700 (PDT) From: anne@sandstrom.com Subject: Re: assorted musings on things joni...now Nash Speaking of swooning... I enjoyed the Graham biography on A&E last night. BUT, it should definitely have been two hours long! I think I'll always have a bit of a crush on him... And, to add some Joni content (and repeat a story I'm sure I must have told here...) A while back, I went to a terrific concert in Montreal, with CSN, Bruce Cockburn and others. Graham was introducing "Our House." He said that many years before he fell in love with a Canadian lady. I embarassed the whole group I was with at that point by yelling "Yay Joni!" Graham even paused for a second and kind of chuckled, then said that yes, the lady was Joni. Even though we stayed in the same hotel as CSN, and spent some time hanging out by the elevators, we never saw them. lots of love Anne ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jul 2002 06:24:51 -0700 (PDT) From: anne@sandstrom.com Subject: Re: Break Out the King Cobra!! 1000 it is! Hey Y'all, thanks for the good words! We DO indeed have a database we can be very proud of. I've seen a couple of other artist websites that catalogue covers of an artist's songs, and if not *the* best ours is certainly up there. There's a pretty comprehensive site on Springsteen covers, but it's not "searchable" and as flexible as ours. For the wonderful layout and flexibility that "Joni Undercover" offers us, recognition has to go to that "Wizard behind the curtain", Les Irvin. Les, thanks for giving me the framework and webspace to do such a cool thing! And of course, ultimately, the REAL kudos goes to the brilliance of Joni, whose songs have inspired so many folks to perform and record them! WARREN901@aol.com writes: >how powerful is joni's a cappella >'the fiddle and the drum' I agree. In fact, I think "The Fiddle and the Drum" is one of Joni's great under rated songs, often overlooked. It's an inspired and masterful melody which, although a capella, is full of implied harmony. And the lyric ... well, it just seems to me that it's more germane than ever. In light of recent discussions of U.S. policy here, I've included it below. - -Fred THE FIDDLE AND THE DRUM And so once again My dear Johnny my dear friend And so once again you are fightin' us all And when I ask you why You raise your sticks and cry, and I fall Oh, my friend How did you come To trade the fiddle for the drum You say I have turned Like the enemies you've earned But I can remember All the good things you are And so I ask you please Can I help you find the peace and the star Oh, my friend What time is this To trade the handshake for the fist And so once again Oh, America my friend And so once again You are fighting us all And when we ask you why You raise your sticks and cry and we fall Oh, my friend How did you come To trade the fiddle for the drum You say we have turned Like the enemies you've earned But we can remember All the good things you are And so we ask you please Can we help you find the peace and the star Oh my friend We have all come To fear the beating of your drum ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jul 2002 21:33:32 -0400 From: "michael o'malley" Subject: Jonifest Invite A Fantasy (please indulge me) Dear Joni, Hope you are enjoying your new computer and enjoying the surf. For example, whenever the subject comes up among friends, I get teased gently by them, who, by and large, do not *get* Joni. They are, however, bemused (and somewhat envious, I suspect) of my passion, and wish they could experience something similar. My partner is no great fan of Joni's either. In fact, he is quite put off by her rebellious nature (which is, of course, one of the reasons why we love her, isn't it?) If pressed he will admit that his favorite albums of hers are the first, STAS, and the last, BSN. Isn't that interesting? Just wondering what your experience is like, beyond the List... (This wasn't the NPR bit that I also caught a little of) On this show, callers from all over the country could call in and ask Nash a question. I heard one caller ask Nash if the song "Willie" by Joni Mitchell was written about him. Nash confirmed that it was (like we didn't know that already). He also explained that William was his middle name and mentioned four people who still call him Willie -Joni, his mother, and ??. I was pretty tired and could not stay awake to hear the whole program. I did hear him complain about why there were not more female callers. He also confirmed that the song "Carrie Ann" was written about Mary Anne Faithful. Did anyone catch this show and hear if there were any more Joni mentions?
