Congrats on the purchase, Erica...both are good efforts, DJRD the stronger of the 2. It's significant to put DJRD in its perspective as far as time is concerned. In 1977, as far as "popular" music you had classic rock, you had disco, you had punk & new wave...and then there was DJRD. It took a lot of the Hejira sound and pushed it even farther to the edge. The lyrics are a bit more cryptic, and of course there's Paprika Plains which is in a class of itself. If you're reading through the lyrics as you're listening, there are a lot of written lyrics in DJRD that she doesn't sing, so be sure & seek them out. Several themes abound in it, relationships & dreams among them. DJRD is on my desert island list. I feel Joni was hitting (another) creative peak, both as a songwriter, and a record maker. I love the sparseness of the arrangements. While the instrumentation is often similar to Hejira, the song are looser and jazzier. Many real nice examples of Joni's guitar playing, "Silky Veils" is a show stopper, and "Off Night Backstreet". The moment when Jaco's bass comes in on the intro to "Cotton Avenue".....Jaco's bass! It's pretty cool, even though "Otis and Marlena" and "Dreamland" sometimes drag a bit. Think of them as intermissions... BTW "Paprika Plains" was the song that caught Charles Mingus' attention and moved him to call Joni to write lyrics for him. NRH, like most of her Klein era albums has not really moved me much. But then I've probably only played it 3 or 4 times...It is considered by many to be a return to form after the synth oriented stuff she had been doing. Is it her last acoustic guitar album? Not sure. Lots of people really like it. En route Nash tells me that 'Frozen Man' is about Neil's relationship with Carrie, they've broken up. He also tells me that 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' was written for him. "I'd broken up with Joni and Neil came to me and said he'd written a song for me, because he knew exactly how I felt. Joni is one of those people who can't make a good relationship last. When we were doing alright, she quit." - --- Victor Johnson - --- waytoblu@mindspring.com "Roses wait for the springtime, They sleep beneath the ground.
