This morning's paper has a nice small pic along with Joni's Canadian award. Cool! On another note, some of you may recall that we had a brief discussion regarding the line from "Sex Kills" mentioned in the subject line. I was baffled about what she meant, whether it was literal or symbolic or what. Well, last night I was doing a tape-to-disc transfer of her August 5, '94 Press Conference after her performance at the Edmonton Folk Festival, and lo & behold there's my answer! Here's what Joni says: "...and also there was this new kind of rape that had developed called 'whirlpooling', which is corralling the young girl in a public swimming pool, you know, doubly-daring, so, broad daylight rape in a crowded place, and that had become the new sport in New York City and parts of Los Angeles, so the rapist in the pool refers to that." While I can't play the DVD-A tracks, there is a DVD Dolby Digital 5.1 recording on it also mixed by Larry Klein. The DVD-A tracks are not remixed by him. The 5.1 mix is wonderful. The sound is realistic concert hall acoustic. The real treat is the direct center placement of Joni's voice, right in the middle of the orchestra. This can realistically be done only with multi channel recording because the center stage in stereo is phantom, not actual. Joni's voice is truly up front" like a real Big Band Girl Singer sand is a delight to hear. The DVD-A is worth getting, though hard to find. Just heard from Victor and entourage. They are in Sarasota and heading to my house in St. Petersburg. Looking so forward to seeing him!
