From what I've been hearing over the last few years, it sounds like Asheville is some kind of folk music "Mecca" - if you build it, they will come! I always joke that there has to be something in the water - how else to explain the talents of Christine Kane, Billy Jonas, David LaMotte, Chris Rosser and David Wilcox all in the same place?... :-) Susan http://www.heartsdesireconcerts.com "Well, I love the way the world is your garden And you plant your seeds and you let them grow And you take things out of the ground just like You take what comes, but you never know..." ~ Dar Williams ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Jun 2002 14:10:51 +0100 From: Gordon Mackie Subject: Craig Armstrong Raf You may be interested to know that I used to work with Craig Armstrong and one of my work colleagues was until 2 months ago, literally his next door neighbour. Craig also did work on the Luhrman 'Romeo and Juliet' and his album The Space Between Us is a very interesting listen. He still lives in Glasgow but has bought fancier digs in a beter part of town with the Moulin Rouge proceeds (so I'm told). One track form the above named album was used by the French car company Renault as a backdrop to a tv ad with Claudia Schiffer. Of course I can't find it now, but somewhere in the recesses of my addled brain I seem to remember a story about Joni coming upon an old, out of tune piano that she decided to play/record in the condition in which she found it. Or am I just imagining that I read this? Laura Nyro (one of a very small number of her contemporaries whom Joni has lavishly praised, and rightly so) was doing that on her second album, Eli & The 13th Confession, in 1967. There was true genius. Rest In Peace, Laura. I'll add my addled .02: I recall that she'd recorded one part of the piano track at one studio, concluding the latter portion at another, and the two pianos were not quite in tune with each other. There've been a couple of times when I wanted to crawl inside the speakers to get _really_ close to the pianos and hear what Mingus heard. Denny OBFiresign Theatre: "That's metaphysically absurd! Since Joseph from the Philippines raised the issue that "Joni in Fiction" is missing a "Joni in Song" section (DOH!), Les has created a new category for songs that are either about Joni, or that mention her. I remember that we had this discussion about a year and a half ago and I thought it was pretty interesting. In any case, I would like to add this info to the database while it's somewhat of a topic . . . so I thought we could: a) Have this discussion again b) People could e-mail me the info off list c) Listers could go to JMDL.com, click on "Joni in Fiction" and send the info along by filling out the form d) Anyone with a better memory that I could give me some idea of when this thread was happening so I can get the info from the archives A couple of listers have already told me off list about the Prince "Dorothy Parker" song, and I remember that "Our House" was supposed to have been written about Joni, but after that the field is wide open. So if anyone is interested in a "Joni in Song" thread, I guess it will just happen. Otherwise please contact me off list or through the form Les has provided that you can fill out at "Joni in Fiction." Thanks for your help!
