NP: Radiohead, "Optimistic" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Jun 2002 08:35:50 EDT From: Abbymusique@aol.com Subject: Joni's crazy sound effects and noises I was thinking last night about how Joni does some really strange things on her songs sometimes. I guess to me the funniest thing she did was sticking that blaring siren noise in the middle of "Nathan Lafraneer." I remember the first time I heard it, I was like, "What in the heck is that?" I couldn't stand it at first, but of course, as time went on I got used to the strange sound and decided that the song wouldn't be the same without it. I also love it when she imitates a chicken at the end of "Talk to Me." Anyone else got any sound effects they love and/or hate by Joni? Abby www.authorsden.com/abbymparks ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Jun 2002 08:50:59 -0400 From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Joni's crazy sound effects and noises <> Hey Abby, I love the "chicken squacking" too...really serves the song well. This week I made my kid sister a Joni compilation CD, and I wanted to show all of Joni's sides. The only rule I placed on myself was that I could only select one song from each record max. "Talk to Me" was my selection from DJRD, as I think it shows 'playful' Joni at her best, and of course Jaco adds another dimension to it as well. But back to your question...on the other side of the spectrum, I really hate her "drink up now, it's getting on time to close" on "Richard" on MOA (she duplicated it on the S&L tour as well). I think the cranky waitress voice takes away from the poignancy of the song. Maybe she's trying to create a contrast between the intensity of the singer/storyteller & the complacency of the waitress, but it always rings false to me. Yes, Joni Mitchell sat in with The Mothers, on November 13th, 1970, at theFillmore East in NYC."Joni Mitchell sat in with us last night during the second show and weimprovised a thing that was really good. And we ended it with her singing'Duke of Earl'. Really far out, she came on stage: 'Now OK and we're goingto improvise this thing...' and we did a few chords for her and she startedreciting this poem which began: 'Penelope wants to fuck the sea..." JONI MITCHELL?"-Zappa, 1970 (Source: Miles)From: DennisMahony (dmahony@prodigy.net)Yeh, I was at that show when Mitchell improvised a tune about a girl whowanted to fuck the sea. While she tried to be ethereal and haunting,Zappa made the band alternate 2 monster chords a tritone apart at anominous largo tempo. Mitchell looked a little thrown by this and glancedover at Zappa, as if she wasn't expecting him to lob her a curve ball. From: Harald Wiester (Harald.Wiester@uni-konstanz.de)I4ve read somewhere that she showed up at least once at Zappa4s place inthe late 604s. Joni Mitchell was Motorhead's "strange new gi > rlfriend", circa 1967.2. She sat in with the Mothers at the Fillmore East on > > who the feck is Motorhead? Motorhead was / is: Jim "Motorhead" Sherwood was an old LA-area high school buddy of Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet). He was a quasi-member of the Mothers of Invention since, hmmm, around '63 / '64 / '65. Originally employed as a roadie, he eventually began playing tambourine, singing, "snorking" (making strange vocal noises) and playing brilliantly ugly free improv sax fulltime with the Mothers around '67. He could never play 'properly', but had a really nice naive attitude that certainly worked with the Mother's political stance: ugly music = ugly society. When Frank torpedoed the Mothers in '69, Jim went too.......but he occasionally turned up in later projects, like 1981's You Are What You Is - snorking and noodling on sax. He is currently an electrician (I understand) living in L.A.- according to the recent-ish BBC documentary about Zappa. Jim was one of the many members of the Mothers that lived in Zappa's house in Laurel Canyon around 67/68/69, so I wouldn't be surprised if the Joanmeister met him there. I'd love to ask her about the GTOs, Brian Wilson/ Beach Boys, Alice Cooper, and all the other LA freaks at the time. For those looking for more info on FZ....Motorhead.....and even a little bit of Joni, check out the very excellent Splat's Zappa Page: http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~splat/zappapage.html Kind Regards: Tom (Any other Beefheart fans amongst the Jonilistas?) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Jun 2002 07:45:33 -0600 From: Kate Subject: I don't believe this . . . . . . Emil just came home from his dad's with a burned cd with Joni singing Ghost Riders in the Sky. Now it doesn't sound like Joni much, to me, except for the odd place, and I am pretty curious (Yippee Ai Ay, Yippee Ai Oh) where the sam hill it was found. Anybody able to tell me? Emil has liked that song since he first heard Fred Penner sing it. He met Fred this weekend after his concert at the International Children's Festival in St. Albert on Saturday. Ever since he met Joni in Saskatoon, he thinks it should be standard to meet any performer he goes to see. I say "Well maybe, but don't count on it" and sure enough he comes home with "Mom, you were wrong! Fred was signing autographs after his concert." That song is so brilliant.......and everything Joni sings in it is so intensely sexy. The wolves on "Lindsay"...love it/them, they add to the haunting nature of the song, one of Joni's best & most overlooked. Can't wait to hear Marian play it again!!!! All these stories of people - -- and no way to know them -- really I love to walk among the headstones and read them and wonder what the person beneath the name looked like and what he did and what she died from and when and of course as a parent the tombstones of children tear at my heart I would very much love to know their stories and always, leaving a graveyard, I feel sombre and yet grateful to still be alive and still have my children with me haven't been there this year yet and last year the mosquitoes nearly sunked us dry when we stopped at a bench there to eat our takeout chinese when i told my neighbour once that i like to walk in graveyards and maybe one day would take a picnic basket she gave me a funny look as if that would not be quite decent her 17-year-old son is buried in a graveyard in hay river, nwt so maybe she has a different view of it than i she is also a practising and mindful catholic whether that has anything to do with it or not there is someone who travelled around alberta or maybe all of canada and took photos of tombstones. i think he did a little research on their life stories too. ok now i can't send this there is no joni content so what the hell do i do with it? i am not on the joni-not list feel kinda like i'm cheating by doing this, adding a joni at the end: my mother, who was born and raised in saskatchewan about 150 miles from Saskatoon (east instead of west, like Maidstone), is very close to Joni's age. She's 61. But the difference between the two of them is almost that of two different generations. My mom has led a conservative life, mostly on the farm although not any longer, and really seems like more of one of my grandparents' generation, while Joni seems more like my own (I'm 43) generation. does this make sense, am i getting my meaning across? i must have a notion that joni is sophisticatedly "cool" while my mother is not, definitely, though she is a beautiful and unique person of character although joni did not give off a coolness at the mendel oh no she was warm, like light, and a very gentle spirit from where i stood my mother is also a singer, the choir variety the kitchen chair or living room couch on xmas eve singsong initiator what a beautiful voice she has, deep and rich and warm and pitch-perfect she was a catherine mckinnon fan before catherine changed her style to jazz and my mother thought that was a mistake that cost her her fans, including mom ranger rick, you know who catherine mckinnon is do you guys stateside know of her? anyway catherine's early records are the kind of music my mom liked back then rick, are you guys fighting fires around vancouver too? it's bad here, there are three large forest fires out of control in alberta and they've been that way for weeks (correct me if my facts are wrong, rr, as we know they can be) and the volunteer firefighters are getting worn out. one of the fires is about 20 miles from my house the wind has whipped it up and shows no signs of giving us a damn break nor is the great spirit responding favourably to halfhearted prayers we need a serious rain dance kate <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Letter Out is a journal whatnot sent via email whenever I have time and inclination.
