I will tape it in case anyone would like to hear it. Cheers Dave ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 May 2002 10:47:06 EDT From: WARREN901@aol.com Subject: joni and the vernacular... hi all ! i have been listening to FTR for several days now . the song " cold blue steel and sweet fire, " plus a recent post, have got my brain revved up. recently someone posted the term ' star maker machinery ' as a term attributed to joni, at the time i remember thinking the term wasn't original to joni but already a part of the vernacular. i started thinking ( possibly dangerous for me and others )about terms that joni has indeed introduced to the vernacular. i made a recent post about drug slang and upon listening to " cold blue steel..." it struck me that i hadn't heard the term used for hypos and heroin, wondered if they were joni's invention or already accepted slang. does anyone know if this term or the phrase ' star maker machinery ' were original to her ? also does anyone know of any other terms or phrases which are joni's contribution to the vernacular ? sound-off listers...another strong possibility might be ' back to the garden ! ' wanting to give joni the credit, warren keith p.s. has this ever been a thread here at JMDL ? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 May 2002 11:03:58 -0400 From: "Sherman" Subject: Warren, Sam, Jack All this FTR talk is getting me staying up late! In response to Mia, For some reason I don't think my message came across the last couple of days. I have heard not only did she date Warren Beatty and Jack Nicholson, but SAME SITUATION is about Beatty! (for what it's worth) The Same Situation Again and again the same situation For so many years Tethered to a ringing telephone In a room full of mirrors A pretty girl in your bathroom Checking out her sex appeal I asked myself when you said you loved me Do you think this can be real? Still I sent up my prayer Wondering where it had to go With heaven full of astronauts And the Lord on death row While the millions of his lost and lonely ones Call out and clamor to be found Caught in their struggle for higher positions And their search for love that sticks around You've had lots of lovely women Now you turn your gaze to me Weighing the beauty and the imperfection To see if I'm worthy Like the church Like a cop Like a mother You want me to be truthful Sometimes you turn it on me like a weapon though And I need your approval Still I sent up my prayer Wondering who was there to hear I said Send me somebody Who's strong and somewhat sincere With the millions of the lost and lonely ones I called out to be released Caught in my struggle for higher achievements And my search for love That don't seem to cease Sharing papa's faith in people, Janine NP: FTR- all this talk about it has gotten me hooked again and her voice is just so perfect on it - I can't stop listening !! My absolute favorites are: Lesson in Survival and Let the Wind Carry Me. Being up in BC near her place last summer makes it all more irresistible. ( bare buttocks looking out at that green water in motion.... my! my!) P.S. Plus, there was a thread about Coyote being about Sam Shepard from some report from the Rolling Thunder tour.???? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 May 2002 08:19:40 -0700 (PDT) From: anne@sandstrom.com Subject: Re: joni and the vernacular... > another > strong possibility might be > ' back to the garden ! ' Great thread idea! Yes, I'd say "back to the garden" is a Joni contribution. I've also heard people say "they paved paradise" when they talk about some kind of damage to the ecology. lots of love Anne ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 May 2002 09:17:09 -0700 From: "Bree Mcdonough" Subject: Re: Warren, Sam, Jack >NP: FTR- all this talk about it has gotten me hooked again and her voice is >just so perfect on it - I can't stop listening !! ( bare buttocks looking out at >that green water in motion.... my! my!) So it was you, wonderful you, who wrote that post about your trip to BC. And your husband and two kids were along too! I remember reading this not too long after joining the JMDL list. I printed your post out and shared it with my two sisters....I wanted them to realize there were other die-hard JM fans besides me. Anyway, after a year, I will tell you now that I really enjoyed it and I thank you for sharing!! It's always called for me Sometimes I get the feeling And I want to settle And raise a child up with somebody I get the strong longing And I want to settle And raise a child up with somebody But it passes like the summer I'm a wild seed again Let the wind carry me..... Did you find the water up there magical or special? Kakki had posted about there "being something in the water." When I was a child about five or six my parents moved us from the city out to the country. Well, I and another sister had a weight gain not too long after this move. My parents would joke that maybe there was *something in the water* that caused this increase in girth. (So...Joni got the *good* water....and I'm so very thankful she did) :-o Take care, Bree NP: FTR _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 May 2002 11:57:09 -0400 (EDT) From: les Subject: Vacations not merely ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 May 2002 19:07:27 +0100 From: LXROSS@ctrl.co.uk Subject: RE: Mingus/Joni BBC Radio 3 6pm Saturday 25th A half hour show wrapping up a series on Mingus' work, I think I understand correctly. Joni content is an excerpt from an earlier interview she did - I think it was the 'my top ten' one for the BBC where she speaks about Charles' 'delicious mischief' which she endeavoured to capture in her painting from the period. The openning verse from 'Chair in the Sky' pretty much wrapped up the Joni part of it with due reference to both Mingus' and Joni's adventurous muse. Also related were the audience reaction for both Mingus and Mitchell both being less than favourable. All caught on tape for anyone interested. " oh, it was a low blow, and it was unfair. i was not abnormally promiscuous, especially within the context of the free love experiment, so to be turned on by my peer group and made an example, made me aware that the whore/Madonna thing had not been abolished by that experiment..." The lyrics definitely need updating. As President Bush heads today for a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, he should take the lead in shaping them. Not that the leaders need to ''hold ourselves a peace talk in some neutral cafe.'' They're already comfortable on each other's territory. Putin visited Bush's Texas ranch in November. He will now show Bush around Moscow and his native St. Petersburg." The writer MUST be a fan. Joni's never performed it live, just did that one version on Hejira. When I talked to Joni in Atlanta, we talked about this song, and she said it had a dated lyric. I told her that lots of standards had dated lyrics, that's partially what makes them standards! I forget, is it one that she's re-cutting for the next project? Bob ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 May 2002 18:36:28 -0700 From: Lindsay Moon Subject: Joni, Warren & Jack Well, I tried searching Les's article database for Playboy mansion, Jack Nicholson & Warren Beatty, but to no avail. I remember Joni relating a story that Warren and Jack had taken her to Hugh Hefner's house, and she found it so disturbing because all the girls they met said, "Hi! I'm So-and-So," showing off their best asset (breasts, rear end, you get the idea). Joni was musing that when they were older, their assets would be gone and then where would they be. She got so upset she ran out and tried to drive away, but her car ran out of gas in the driveway and she burst into tears. I remember this story, but can't think where I read it. I'll keep poking around the library. Lindsay ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 May 2002 18:10:17 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: Joni, Warren & Jack Lindsay, I remember that story, too. It could have been the water, probably the fresh air, and definitely being surrounded by, IMHO, the most gorgeous scenery on the planet. She escaped the distractions and personal wars in L.A. for the purest of environments. I wonder what other of her songs were written up there?
