The seller quotes Jason Ankeny who said, >>>Sad, spare, and beautiful, Blue is the quintessential confessional singer/songwriter album. Forthright and poetic, Mitchell's songs are raw nerves, tales of love and loss (two words with relative meaning here) etched with stunning complexity; even tracks like "All I Want," "My Old Man," and "Carey" the brightest, most hopeful moments on the record are darkened by bittersweet moments of sorrow and loneliness. At the same time that songs like "Little Green" (about a child given up for adoption) and the title cut (a hymn to salvation supposedly penned for James Taylor) raise the stakes of confessional folk-pop to new levels of honesty and openness, Mitchell's music moves beyond the constraints of acoustic folk into more intricate and diverse territory, setting the stage for the experimentation of her later work. Unrivaled in its intensity and insight, Blue remains a watershed.>>> No reason to think this particular copy is any different from any other. I just liked the quote. Not only didn't she not put out something new last time (not one new track) but she's so burned out that she's doing the same thing again. This new project is her first-ever sequel. And it's a sequel to "nothing new". How scary is that? Lama, off to bed before he bites the hand again..... Fred said, >>It's a really interesting question. I've put a lot of thought into it, and while I don't have it all figured out, I do think I have a few plausible answers. I'm not sure about the idea that she has become more interested in exploring sonorities, because she has always been quite involved in that, and has always excelled at it. Maybe you're right that she is now interested in that to the detriment of melody and harmony.>>> ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Apr 2002 7:26:47 -0700 From: "Victor Johnson" Subject: Re: "Pornographic watches & Priests? > But there were some wonderful teachers (priests and nuns) and some terrible > ones. I went to Nashville once and attended an Irish Catholic church with some friends we were visiting(who's dog had puppies on our sleeping bag but that's another story) and the priest who led the service was amazing. He really seemed like a very spiritual man, everything he said seemed to be full of compassion and wisdom. He also repeated alot of things in Spanish, through much of the service. I have been lurking here for months now, and I would now like to introduce myself. My name is Ruth. I live in Richmond, VA (any fellow jimdlers in Richmond?) and I have been a Joni fan since about 1970. Like many other fans, my older sisters introduced me to her work. Like a multitude of other admirers, I viewed Joni as my own personal muse at a very important time in my life. She even appeared to me in a dream, explaining duality, although in the dream she referred to it as "twoness". I got distracted and lost touch with Joni somewhere around Mingus. I later reconnected with CMIARS and NRH. I have a couple of comments on recent discussions. First, I have always believed the inspiration behind That Song About the Midway, The Priest, and Rainy Night House was Leonard Cohen. Some of Cohen's poetry (not songs) seems to refer to Joni. He called her Saint Joan, and said she sang her songs to show us we were not yet found, or something to that effect. Also, his father was a wealthy clothing manufacturer, which could be why he was "wearing his father's tie". Regarding the "is Joni's older work more melodic" discussion, imho, the breakup with LK and the joys/sorrows of reuniting with Kilauren have knocked the wind out of her sails. I do not think she has yet recovered. Add to that her disgust with the current music scene and music industry, and I can understand why she is not doing any really groudbreaking work these days. She is, after all, human. She has given a lot more than most in this world. I was surprised to read such a provocative point of view from such a big Joni fan, Bob, but as I have been digesting these words over the last hour or so, I have to say that I am inclined to agree with you. In Joni's defense, I think that one thing the four artists you mentioned have which she seems to totally is a real love for live performance. And no matter what happens in the music world, Joni does have her box of paints to slip back into, so music isn't her sole means of expression. But you have a point, I think, about her disgust with the music business. After all the recent accolades and awards -- and after decades of worship by the likes of us! -- I would think that maybe she might have lightened up a little by now (even if the music biz itself does seem to be getting worse than ever lately). Also . . . welcome, Ruth! I enjoyed your post -- especially your insight into the Klein/Kilauren influence on Joni's creativity. --Bob ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Apr 2002 16:50:35 EDT From: Murphycopy@aol.com Subject: Re: Introduction + I wrote: << In Joni's defense, I think that one thing the four artists you mentioned have which she seems to totally is a real love for live performance. >> But what I meant was: In Joni's defense, I think that one thing the four artists you mentioned have which she seems to totally lack is a real love for live performance. --Bob ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Apr 2002 19:58:46 -0400 From: Relayer211@aol.com Subject: Re: Re: "Pornographic watches & Priests?" I was chuckling that Joni was so talking the California Valley Girl talk 30 years ago! All the liberal uses of "like," "you know," and "really." Surprising that she picked it up after living here for just a few years. Reminds me how my proper east coast mother used to always be trying to (figuratively speaking) beat that talk out of me! I'm sort of new to this list so I apologize in advance if I'm bringing up old topics. (I'm also a day behind.) The discussions have been so interesting I just had to dive in! I've always imagined "The Priest Song" as a story about Joni retracing her steps that led up to her marriage with Chuck. I thought I had read somewhere that she had married Chuck after only knowing him for a short while. And with her unplanned pregnancy, she was looking for any possible way to make it work. I pictured Joni and Chuck consulting the priest about marriage in this airport bar and that Joni felt very awkward about the situation. ("and my eyes said let us try") I felt she was expressing the doubt that ran through her head (" which words was I then to doubt when choosing what to vow" and "just as one loves more and more will one love less and less") Perhaps she even felt a little bit of guilt after the marriage dissolved ("make them both confess"). I have a question regarding the picture on the cover of STAS. This has been driving me crazy for years! Does anyone know when and where this picture was taken? And what is she holding in her arms? It almost looks like a teddy bear. And could those be maternity clothes?
