If my understanding is correct, Judy started singing Joni songs before Joni was very well known (or had released her first album?) to the point of having Hillary Clinton actually credit Judy with Chelsea Morning (which she did the first time I heard her tell the story. She's since referred to it as Joni's song, I know.) I don't know much about Judy...does she write too, or just sing? Did Joni place many of her song with others in those early days? My thought is similar. When I was a kid a friend of mine had a key chain with a naked man and woman on it. It was like a pop up book with a little lever that when pulled, caused the couple to become engaged in coitus (trying to be as delicate as possible). Noel Harrison did a fine "Nathan La Franeer" on an album in the late 1960s ("Collage" in 1967, I think). Noel, son of actor Rex Harrison, also covered Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" and lots of Dylan ("Baby Blue", "Tambourine Man", "Love Minus Zero", "Ramona", etc). He had a hit with "Windmills Of Your Mind" (theme to the [original] film "The Thomas Crown Affair") Are any of these tracks still available on CD? Phil ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Apr 2002 12:39:08 EDT From: Merk54@aol.com Subject: Re: Jack, Joni, Yes and 6 Feet Under Marianne, I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was probably a little long, and a little rambling, but that's the danger of writing from a hotel room, while out of town on business. Not much else to do, so why not dust off the old keyboard, and bore the hell out of my fellow JMDL'ers with my reminesing. Speaking of which, last night, I decided to re-enact that evening by playing those three albums in their entirety. It seemed only appropiate that I actually listen to the original albums (not the cd's), so it required a little set up. I have a really nice turntable on my upstairs stereo, but I've recently set up a killer system in the basement, so I decided to finally make the effort and move the turntable downstairs. I then opened a bottle a wine, little a few candles, turned on the lava lamp (yes - I still have a lava lamp!), and began listening to Madman Across the Water. Very nice indeed. I've always loved Madman, though it's not an Elton John I typically grab when I'm in the mood to listen to him, so this was great to hear. Earlier in the evening, I saw Sir Elton on the Carson Daly show, and he talked briefly about how special the Tiny Dancer scene in Almost Famous was to him. That was my favorite scene in the movie, so to be listening to Tiny Dancer later that night was great. Indian Sunset was another highlight. ....And peace to this young warrior, comes with a bullet hole! Great, powerful stuff. The Yes Album was particularly nice to hear. I probably hadn't heard that album in ten years or more. I don't have it on cd, and just sort of forgotten about it. It was a real treat to listen to. I particularly like A Venture. Thanks to the list for all of this talk about Yes. It got me motivated to listen to this group again - tonight I'm planning on listening to Fragile. Before playing Blue, I decided to check out tv for a second - I wanted to get the basketball scores. In turning it on, the set was turned to HBO, and guess what had just started - the Back to the Garden episode of Six Feet Under. I missed maybe 10 or fifteen minutes, but I decided I had to watch this because of all the favorable comments the list has made about this show. I am so happy I did. What an enjoyable hour of television this was. And the final scene where the mother was singing along to Woodstock, and then the plaintive cries of Joni at the end of Woodstock playing over the credits was just incredible. Another big thank you. This show should not be missed if you can help it. Finally it was time for Blue. By now the bottle of wine was empty, it was after 1 in the morning, and my eyes were getting heavy, but I was determined to complete my little salute to 1971. The first little treat was pulling the album out of it's jacket, to discover the blue paper dust cover. I'm not sure why this pleased me, but it did. Cd's are nice and convenient, but there is something magicallabout vinyl, and the packing this format could support. Anyway, listening to Blue was great (isn't it always?). Little Green and River stood out in particular. I tried to recall what was going through my mind 30 some years ago, and while I recall the event very clearly, the emotions are kind of a blur. Seventeen wasn't exactly the happiest of times in my life, but somehow through music I was able to find solace when I couldn't find it anywhere else. And nobody's music does that better than Joni's. Jack ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Apr 2002 12:54:27 -0400 From: Vince Lavieri Subject: This Day in History: April 22 This is posted early because someone asked about Judy Collins. On this date in Joni History, 1969: As everyone knows, according to Ephoros, there were 3 muses, with Aoide being the muse of music. (Do not be confused that Myrtilos thougth there wer 7 muses or Hesiod thought there were 9, what did they know?) On this date, 22 April 1969, the Muse of Music, Aoide, went to God and said, God, "I have a problem. There are 3 great artists and I wish to know which is the greatest of all. Is it Joan Baez, Judy Collins, or Joni Mitchell? Who has the greatest talent of all?" And God said, "I will give you a test to pose to all three, and by their answers you will know who is the greatest of all. Appear to each in a dream and say, name an outstanding man, and explain why that man is outstanding." Aoide said to God, "In all of creation, in all of history, has there ever been an outstanding man? This is too great of a test!" God smiled at Aoide, and she said to Aoide, "The greatest artist can take up even this challenge." So Aoide went to Joan Baez in a dream and said, who is an outstanding man? And Joan answered, "My husband David. He grew up in a poor family and went out among the poor and disspossessed and taught them to seek justice and equality, to oppose war and violence; David said there was a better way. David organized draft resistance, and for this, the authorities locked him away. And in jail David organized the prisoners and led a hunger strike so that even the least of people shall be accorded respect and granted dignity and full human rights. And David will always be remembered because I will talk about him in the Woodstock movie and generations shall know his story" Aoide said to God, "Surely Joan is the greatest because she knows such an outstanding man." God said, "try again." So Aoide likewise went to Judy Collins in a similar manner and Judy answered, "My former lover Stephen. He grew up in a poor family, came into this life, the son of a woman and a man who lived in strife, he was tired of being poor, and he wasn't into selling door to door, and he worked like a devil to be warm. So he took his guitar and went to the people and sang that they should stop, look what's going on, and he sang songs of peace, like Wooden Ships, and he moved people. But best of all, he loved me, and I broke up with him and he wrote "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" about me and it became a very famous song and now people pay $250 a ticket just to hear Stephen sing about me in a song about me that shall always be remembered." Aoide said to God, "Surely Judy is the greatest because she knows such an outstanding man." God said, "try again." So Aoide now went to Joni Mitchell and asked the same question. And Joni began to talk in a torrent, "Perhaps our souls are all little men. Maybe our souls are all women. But an outstanding man is Jesus. He grew up in a poor family and went out to the disspossed people and brought them food and healing, and spoke of love, justice, and the equality of all people and a day to come when all would be blessed and satisfied. Jesus treated women as equals, even more, in that the Gospel was always first proclaimed to women. Jesus taught that all people are good and loved by God. The authorities hated Jesus so they arrested Jesus. And Jesus will always be remembered because they beat Jesus and crucified Jesus and Jesus died and they put him in a tomb and put a large stone in front of the tomb sealed the tomb and put guards oiutside the tomb to keep Jesus in the tomb. But an angel came from God and rolled the stone away, and Jesus stepped out, and if he sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter." And Aoide found the greatest of them all. And God said, SIQUOMB. And thus Joni took us back to the garden, to get our souls free. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Apr 2002 10:21:50 -0700 (PDT) From: Mags N Brei Subject: reading Joni lyrics out loud Last night, Brian and I were talking and he asked me to read him some poetry...and when I asked him what he would like to hear, he said, read me some Joni, get out her Lyrics book and just read. I love to read out loud, something I have enjoyed doing for most of my life and will leap at the chance. This was so special, this Joni moment about to happen. Brian gave me the choice of what to read, so I opened the book and stopped right there at that perfect place so filled with meaning. I told him I would read the pair, and he knew exactly what was coming next. Into that silence, the chilled Saturday night air was filled with such warmth as I began to touch fingertips with Marcie. By reading from the Poems and Lyrics book, something was happening. Some altered state. I soon discovered why. There lay the bare bone words...no photos, no credits, no music, no voices, only my own. Nothing stood between Brian and I in that moment ... and the words flowed so freely..like a beautiful bedtime story from a long and distant past, giving us both such comfort. We were taken down to a level of her words that I've never quite experienced before. Perhaps it was because I was reading to Brian, perhaps it is because I'm just the biggest mushball of all, that said...it was an experience I encourage you all to try. Pick up the book, not an album cover or CD cover...and just hold that book in your hands and imagine. And read. Read the words out loud. Listen to your voice. Imagine that fine lady of the canyon sitting in a quiet place at home perhaps, writing those words down. Perhaps with Graham in the next room. He was certainly in her heart. You can feel it in her words. For certain, I could feel her hands on the paper. I saw the ink she chose. I felt the lump in her throat and the heaviness in her heart at times. Choose your favourite song if you wish, or better yet, choose one you don't know much about. I swear it was one of the most moving experiences. I couldn't make it through Marcie without crying. And then to read Nathan LaFraneer, it was too much. I moved on to the DawnTreader, a song I love so well. I remembered the time I visited Catherine at her home in Toronto and that was one of the songs we sang together. A beautiful memory began as our voices swirled around her livingroom, with her children listening nearby. Brian and I talked about why these songs are so meaningful to us, histories revealed, shared, understood. I looked through my book and began to read other words laid down upon the pages by the special people on this list that I have had the privilege to meet in person at the past two Joni Fests. My Poems and Lyrics book is also my autograph book, my signifier of the wonderful, special friendships I am honoured to be a part of. To those whose words grace my book, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for there are no words which could truly express how it feels to know you and how much your words mean to me. I am so lucky and blessed beyond all my imaginings. It is my hope to continue to collect even more words from you. I just wanted to say a special thanks to Les for making this possible. We are forever grateful, from the bottom of our hearts. love, MagsnBrei It's been a long, long road. ===== You open my heart, you do. Yes you do. - JM Yahoo! However, sometimes I wish it had been shot at one of the indoor venues. I saw that tour a couple of days earlier at the Civic Auditorium in SF, and the lighting was incredible. Very tasteful and imaginative use of lights... pulsing, alternating red and white during the part of "Edith" when she sings "The band sounds like typewriters", and then back to normal after that section... and the end of "Woodstock", as Joni walked off and continued strumming long after she left the stage, a pattern of red roses (shone from directly overhead, from a gobo) slowly came up on the spot she had been standing, and then faded when she finally stopped playing. Very sublime. Ah, if it had been shot with modern equipment! Still, it is a nice document of that time. I finally got a chance to go to a show at the Bowl a couple of years ago. Neil Young with his Friends & Relatives band. Great show, and a great venue. Relatively small for an outdoor amphitheatre (3,000), and very rustic. Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges were sitting right in frony of us, and at the conclusion of an amazing version of "All Along The Watchtower", Spacey turned around and high-fived me! What I mean by that is my lazy habit of pushing the channel-changer to find the least objectionabe program. I don't have anything against Ms. O'Donnell and bravo to her for what she's done for gays. I merely get tired of the celebrity hype, the -- to me it seems -- careful release of her being gay to coincide with the release of her book (I think we all knew she was gay) so that it starts up a lot of media hype. I tire of seeing her on every magazine cover, hearing her name every time I turn on the TV, etc. It's more my objection to the media than her personally. I didn't mean to offend.
