["Jim L'Hommedieu \(Lama\)" Subject: RE: Joni's influence on contemporary songwriters hey jenny, i hope you will check out cassandra. her cover of black crow falls a little short, but lots of her covers are truly inspired, especially U2's 'love is blindness' as warren mentioned, along with many others. on an album that was about miles davis, called 'travelling miles' she covered cindy lauper's 'time after time' as well as 'someday my prince will come' because miles had covered both. spectacular versions. my favorite cover, actually my favorite cassandra song is her version of 'i can't stand the rain', the old disco song by melvin peebles. she turns it into a delta blues that just kills me. and the joni content is that of the many versions of 'both sides now' that we've heard courtesy bob, the absolute finest, in my opinion, is cassandra wilson's, with guitarist pat martino. brings the song completely back to life. and we heard that originally because of simon, on one of the early tape trees... patrick np - bill evans at montreaux, 6.15.68 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Apr 2002 00:35:14 -0400 From: Relayer211@aol.com Subject: I missed you all! For people new to the list, I'll add that our host, Les Irvin is a man of few words indeed. After posting 4 paragraphs today, I consulted Les'es astrological chart, factored in his social security card number, shoe size, the street address of his maternal grandmother's residence on her wedding day, AND I'm relived to announce that Les will post again in the year 2525. BTW, in the year 2525, if man is still alive, if woman can survive, they may find...... (but I can't remember WHAT they find! AGGRRH) Anyway, I'm starting a grassroots movement to have Les un*subbed from the list. Who's with me? Lama Les said, >>>> The "today" posts are set up to issue automatically on a daily basis. The first person to hit the JMDL website after 2AM each morning automatically triggers the emails. A note is then made in the database indicating the email has been sent for the day so that all subsequent hits to the page do not trigger the same email. Late on the 15th, I made an untested update to the page that had a programming error in it. Because of this, the code began recognizing the "send the email out" command, but ignored the "it's already been sent" portion. So... every single time someone visited the website on the 16th.... an email got sent to the list. Again, my sincere apologies for the 418 unwanted email messages. Please let me know if this caused any problems with your mail service and I'll do what I can to make it right. Les, who may never need to post again. :-)>>>>>> ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Apr 2002 00:58:04 -0700 From: Michael Paz Subject: Half asleep in Gator Jammies Hi All I am half asleep but felt it my civic duty to post that there are TWO Joni refs in this months Rolling Stone with the lovely Osbournes on the cover. First one is on page 9 in Random Notes Under a pic of Ryan Adams Elton John and Bob Dylan. Caption reads: "He reminded me of a conquistador, a spanish cowboy," says Ryan Adams of Bob Dylan, who showed up at Elton John's post-Oscar party at Moomba in Los Angeles. "It's like he walked out of some strange, freaked out western film from Mars." Dylan and Rufus Wainwright got busted smiking cigarettes (not cool in California restaurants). "He was smoking American Spirits-that's what Joni Mitchell smokes, too" reports the eagle-eyed Wainwright. "I gotta switch brands immediately." The next one is on page 26 "The Best Rock Movie Ever Made" with a story about the restoration of the Last waltz. Sorry if this has been posted before as I am half asleep in gator jammies.
