What a great question, Erica. I have often thought the same about Morgantown and Sisotowbell Lane. Jovial neighbors come down when they will With stories to tell Sometimes they do Yes sometimes we do We have a rocking chair Each of us rocks his share Eating muffin buns and berries By the steamy kitchen window Sometimes we do Our tongues turn blue ah... too much daydreaming at the office today. Then, after seeing her perform it live, I came away with an entirely different take. During that magical night at the Gorge Amphitheater in 1998 Joni and the band transformed what to me had previously been a blase examination of contemporary society into a truly apocalyptic vision. With Brian Blade leading the way, the band (Greg Liesz and Larry Klein) gradually built the foundation which began slowly and quickly added huge drama. I remember sitting there in awe with thoughts of a whirling dark cloud that threatened to overtake everything in its path. Blade's drumming rolled through the song with crescendo after crescendo and created a feeling of turmoil, which is, I believe, the song's intent...to examine modern perils. I am very much looking forward to hearing the orchestrated version of this song. This would be a fine time for Joni to push the arrangement into a cacophonous edge which would once again portray our world for what it is today...complex, trying, and often tragic. Well, i sat down with my guitar the other night, not really feeling very excited about playing, but needing to let out some emotion, when suddenly a Joni Mitchell song came flying right out of me!! Across my fingers it flew! And in standard tuning! I couldn't have stopped it if i had wanted to. I played it through a time or two more, just to make sure i had something worth keeping, i did, in my opinion, so i wrote it down and can now add that to my set list to play at Jonifest!!! I'm so pleased with myself that I had to share it with the only people who really understand this. One more reason to be looking forward to our fest! Take care my friends.
